Destination 2025! FAA!s Strategic Plan! Increase Aviation Safety! Create the Workplace of Choice! Deliver Aviation Access through Innovation! Sustain Our Future! Improve Global Performance through Collaboration 9
NextGen! The Next Generation Air Transportation System will:! Increase Capacity! Reduce Delays! Reduce Emissions! Reduce Fuel Consumption! Reduce Noise 10
What Can NextGen Achieve?!!!! Make it Safer satellite provides faster updates with greater positional accuracy versus conventional radar for surveillance and navigation. Make it More Efficient - delays in 2009 resulted in $2 Billion in lost income and $9 Billion in lost productivity. Make it Sustainable impact on the environment with petroleum based fuels, carbon emissions and noise. Make it Flexible - demand and congestion will increase dramatically and our system must be flexible to accommodate NAS user needs. 11
Current NextGen Programs! Data Communications (Data Comm)! System Wide Information Management (SWIM)! Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B)! Time-Based Flow Management (TBFM)! Optimization of Airspace & Procedures in the Metroplex (OAPM) 12
Metroplex 13
Commercial Space Transportation 14
Commercial Space Transportation Industry 15
Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)! Operating in the National Airspace System! Current Uses! Future Uses! Safety Challenges! Plan to integrate into the NAS by 2015 16
Types of UAS! Model Aircraft! Limits operations to below 400 feet above ground level and away from airports and air traffic! Experimental UAS! Allows operations for research and development, market survey, and crew training! Public UAS! Available to public entities, including military, law enforcement, and other governmental agencies! Civil UAS! Future operations with small UAS 17
Aircraft Noise Issues! 15 Congressional Inquiries in FY2012! Santa Monica 250-Degree Test! John Wayne RNAV Departure (STREL)! Los Angeles CDA over La Habra Heights! Long Beach Approaches over Seal Beach! San Francisco Approaches over Woodside VOR! San Francisco Departures over Brisbane! Los Angeles (LA) Helicopter Noise Initiative 20
LA Helicopter Noise Initiative! May 23, 2012! Seven Southern California Congressional Representatives Requested the FAA to Solicit Local Views on Helicopter Noise in LA County! Evaluating Routes, Operating Altitudes, Hovering Practices, and Noise Issues! Planned Outreach Activities and Meetings to Address Concerns and Explore Resolution!
