The full list of instructors is available at dmparks.org. Take a Bite Out of Our Summer Sampler Des Moines Parks and Recreation is excited for the addition of our Summer Sampler to the 2016 Yoga Season. Saturday mornings in July and August, join us from 10:30-11:15 as we highlight different wellness opportunities to be found in the Des Moines area. The sampler starts in with Yoga Nidra, a type of guided meditation designed to relax the body while keeping the mind engaged. The following weeks bring Tai Chi, the art of gentle movements to promote relaxation and reduce stress; Zumba, high energy dance movements set to a Latin beat; and Nia, a cardio, dance work-out based on how the body is designed to move. In August, the Sampler moves to the where we slow things down with QiGong, a moving meditation that combines physical postures with breathing techniques, then rev things up again with CrossFit, a varied work-out which focuses on strength, conditioning, endurance, stamina, speed, coordination, and agility; and Body Weight Bootcamp, a high energy, no equipment workout that challenges both the novice and ultra-advanced. As the summer winds down, so does the Sampler with a guided meditation within the beautiful landscape and celebrated art of the Sculpture Park.

RIDE AND GOLF FORE OUR PARKS! The Friends of Des Moines Parks annual fundraising golf tournament, FORE Our Parks, will take place on Friday, June 17 at Waveland Golf Course (4908 University Avenue) from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Last year s event was enjoyed by 124 golfers and raised over $30,000. Organizers are looking to double that this year, with funds earmarked for a playground project. Cost is $150 for individuals and $500 for foursomes. New for 2016, in conjunction with the golf event will be an 18-mile bike ride. Starting and ending at the Waveland Golf Course, this scenic route will utilize many of the local trails. Visit dmparks.org for details on how to participate in both events! NEW DOG BONE PURCHASE PROGRAM Des Moines Parks and Recreation is proud to offer a way to memorialize your furry friend in one of our three dog parks. Dog bone plaques are available for purchase at the price of $100 and will be installed at the dog park of your choice Ewing, Reno Memorial or Riverwalk. With up to 16 characters available, even the dogs with the longest of names will be able to be memorialized. Each plaque is 8 inches by 4 inches in size. All proceeds go towards dog park improvements. Visit our website at dmparks.org to purchase your memorial bone today. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CEMETERY ACTIVITIES On Memorial Day weekend, visiting a cemetery has become a tradition for many. Guests often leave bouquets, plant flowers, clean headstones or place flags as they pay their respects. Staff will be available at Glendale and Laurel Hill Cemeteries to provide assistance for locating markers, floral sales and lot sales on Friday, Saturday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 11a.m. to 4 p.m. FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FOR SALE As a convenience to our visitors Friday, May 27 through Monday, May 30, we will have a wide variety of plastic/silk floral bouquets for purchase, ranging in price from $8.00 to $23.00. These arrangements will only be available at Glendale and Laurel Hill. HISTORICAL WOODLAND CEMETERY TOURS Tours are available of the historical Woodland Cemetery by a local historian ranging from 45 minutes to one hour. Tour sizes can range from eight to 20 people. Tours are free however a donation is suggested which helps provide headstones for infants buried in the cemetery. To arrange a guided tour, contact Archie Cook at 515-266-1627 or archiecook@email.com. NEW SPRAYGROUND COMING TO GREENWOOD PARK The Greenwood water playground, or sprayground, was constructed in the location of the old wading pool on top of the hill and will be open this spring. The facility consists of a stamped concrete surface that is colored to look like natural stone with large artificial limestone pieces arranged in a Stonehenge pattern. The sprayground contains 19 water nozzles that spray water at the touch of a button. By replacing the aged existing wading pool with an on-demand water delivery system, water consumption and City staff time are kept to a minimum, thereby reducing costs of operation. The sprayground will operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. May through October, greatly extending the season over the old wading pool. The new sprayground is being constructed in accordance with ADA Standards, allowing the water playground to be enjoyed by a greater number of users than the former wading pool. The sprayground is aimed for children aged 10 and under; however it is designed in a way that people of all ages will enjoy it. The sprayground was made possible by a generous donation from the Mary K. and Daniel M. Kelly Foundation. The Kelly family was also closely involved in the design of the sprayground. Des Moines Parks and Recreation is currently in the process of updating both Pioneer Columbus and Four Mile Community Centers. When completed, the facilities will be more inviting and functional for the nearly 100,000 people who utilize the centers for events, programs, parties, classes and more. Big Changes Coming to Both Community Centers Four Mile will see the main room expanded and remodeled with new flooring, fresh paint and improved ventilation for increased comfort. In addition, there will be a new welcome center with a workstation for staff. There will also be a new waiting/ activity room, modified office space adjacent to the main room and increased workstations in the computer lab. Pioneer Columbus is undergoing a more extensive transformation. The facility will gain square footage as an opening on the north side of the facility will be enclosed. One of the main walls is being removed to open up a new fitness space downstairs with an expanded multi-use space upstairs. A new welcome center will allow staff to have greater visibility of the various areas of the building. The weight room will have new flooring, improved lighting and brand new equipment. Des Moines Parks and Recreation is always looking to find the best ways to engage citizens and offer additional opportunities to participate in wellness. These two facilities will be part of helping people achieve physical, mental, and social well-being. An open house for both buildings will be announced later this year to celebrate these improvements.
