INTRODUCTION You have been selected to attend the Summer Leadership Experience at West Point. This package contains information for making your travel arrangements, preparing to attend, and details for what you can expect while at SLE. For more information about SLE contact the program coordinator at (845) 938-5749/5708 or via email at: commillia.oliver@usma.edu. TRAVEL TO WEST POINT West Point is located 50 miles north of New York City on the west bank of the Hudson River. When making arrangements to travel by air, we recommend you prearrange any necessary ground transportation prior to your arrival in the West Point area. When traveling in New York City, we remind you to exercise caution, just as you would in any large metropolitan area. AIR Newark International Airport (EWR) West Point provides free ground transportation for participants whose flights arrive at Newark by 3 p.m. Check in for the buses to West Point are located outside the Baggage Claim for Terminal A. Uniformed military will be posted at each terminal at Newark to assist participants as required. Military academy buses are for participants only. Ground transportation is not provided from other locations e.g., Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), or Stewart airports (SWF), or Port Authority Bus Terminal et al. Participants who arrive from locations other than Newark (EWR) are responsible arranging their own ground transportation to West Point. When arranging ground transportation we recommend you make travel arrangements using Newark International Airport. BUS/TRAIN From the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT): Bus Service to West Point is provide by the Short Line Bus Company. Call (800) 631-8405 for current schedules and information. Travel time by bus from NYC to West Point is approximately three hours. From Grand Central Station: Daily rail service to Garrison, NY is provided by Metro-North line. Garrison is approximately 20 minutes from West Point. West Point does not provide shuttle service to/from Garrison. AUTOMOBILE GPS Destination: 1 Thayer Road, West Point, New York 10996 From LaGuardia or JFK airports: Take the Grand Central Parkway to the Triborough Bridge. Signs will read Bronx, Upstate New York, New England Left Lanes. Follow signs to the Major Deegan Expressway, NYS Thruway, George Washington Bridge. Take exit 47 Major Deegan Expressway, North 87, NYS Thruway, Major Deegan. Once on the Major Deegan, take exit 7 towards Cross Bronx Expressway, George Washington Bridge then follow the signs for I-95 South, George Washington Bridge UPPER LEVEL. Exit the bridge onto Palisades Parkway NORTH. From Newark Airport to West Point: Take Interstate 78 West to the Garden State Parkway. Take the Garden State north to the end and follow signs for the New York State Thruway. Take exit 13N onto the Palisades Parkway NORTH. 4
Once on the Palisades Parkway NORTH, drive approximately 40 miles north to the Bear Mountain traffic circle. Exit the traffic circle taking Route 9W northbound (Newburgh/West Point). Pass through Fort Montgomery, then take first West Point exit. Pass through Highland Falls onto West Point s Thayer Gate. ENTRY TO WEST POINT SECURITY CHECK All persons over the age 14 must present a valid photo ID to enter West Point. Due to heightened security, your vehicle may be searched by military police. SLE RECEPTION The SLE Reception Center, located near Clinton Field, will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on your arrival day. Families arriving by car may drop off their students at the reception center between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. It is critical that you arrive during the reception center hours of operation to ensure you can participate fully in all the day s events. Parking Once through the security check inside Thayer Gate, make the first left, just prior to the 4-way intersection, into the Buffalo Soldier Field parking lot. A shuttle will take you to Clinton Field. 5
RULES PHONES 1. After check in, participants should contact their parent or legal guardian to confirm his/her safe arrival. Participants may use their own cell phones or public telephones located on the first floor of the barracks. 2. Use of personal cell phones is not permitted in classrooms or while participating in activities. LIVING QUARTERS 3. All participants are pre-assigned rooms. Changes in room assignment after arrival are requested through Cadet Cadre. 4. Male and female participants are housed separately and neither are allowed in the other s living areas, except as directed by Cadet Cadre. 5. Bed checks will be made a half hour after the last scheduled evening activity (approximately 11 p.m.) each night. Use of bathrooms is permitted, however any other requests to leave your room during sleeping hours must be made through Cadet Cadre. 6. Participants are responsible for the cleanliness of their rooms. Be sure to keep your living area neat, make your bed every morning, and empty your trash prior to departing to class each day. PROPER ATTIRE 7. Any clothing brought from home should be conservative and appropriate for wear during your visit. Cadet Cadre reserve the right to require participants to change attire as directed. 8. Appropriate attire is required when transiting public spaces to and from shower facilities. PERSONAL CONDUCT 9. Personal and professional standards of behavior apply at all times. 10. Participants are expected to attend all scheduled meals, and conduct themselves appropriately for family style meals. 11. Common sense dictates against sitting on window sills and/or throwing things out of windows. Horse play in the barracks could lead to unnecessary injuries and will not be tolerated. 12. The use of privately owned vehicles during your time at SLE is prohibited. Participants who drive SLE must submit their keys to Cadet Cadre for safe keeping. Keys will be returned at the conclusion of SLE. 13. No alcohol is permitted in the barracks at any time. Any participant who is unwilling to abide by these rules is subject to dismissal from SLE, and will be sent home at the sole expense of the participant. 14. Illegal drugs, firearms, other weapons, or contraband are strictly prohibited. Violators are subject disciplinary action, including prosecution. 6
PACKING CHECKLIST This checklist will help you pack for the week. West Point will provide each participant two polo shirts for academic workshops, and three t-shirts for physical training and intramural sports. There is no need to dress up at any of the events, however, collared shirts are appropriate when a uniform is not designated. Bed linens, Blanket, Pillow 3-4 pairs khaki pants, shorts, or skirts for wear in the classroom 2-3 pairs closed-toe shoes for class, field training, and physical training (at least 1 of those is running shoe) 6 pairs running socks 4 pairs running shorts 10 pairs underwear 5 athletic sports bras (women) 1 pair of pajamas Shower shoes/flip flops 1 set sweatpants and sweatshirt 1 pair of jeans for military training must be loose-fitting (no hip-huggers) 1 long-sleeved t-shirt for military training Eyeglasses or contact lenses (if needed) Sunscreen Prescription medicine (if prescribed, must have your name on it) Personal hygiene items (soap, shampoo, deodorant, towels, washcloths, toothbrush, toothpaste, and hairbrush.) Feminine hygiene products (women) Photo identification (driver s license, student ID card) Combination Lock Spending money or credit card (Visa or MasterCard) to purchase items at Cadet Gift Shop (if desired) Small fan (if desired, barracks are not air conditioned) Cell phone, MP3 player (if desired) Postage stamps, (if desired) *Note* Laundry facilities are not available. The recommended number of items will cover all events, including physical and military training components. *Note* All meals are provided. 7

DEPARTURE Newark International Airport (EWR) Free shuttle buses are available to Newark International Airport. Be sure to schedule flights departing EWR after 2 p.m. Students/parents departing by car can meet at Clinton Field to load baggage and depart. FOR FAMILY PARENTS BRIEFING There will be a briefing for parents at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., after they drop you off at the registration center. Parents will gather at the reception center and be escorted to the Jefferson Hall for the briefing. CLOSING CEREMONY Family are invited to attend the Closing Ceremony, scheduled for Friday, 9 a.m., in Robinson Auditorium, located inside Thayer Hall. Parking for the closing ceremony is available at Clinton Field, near Trophy Point or at Buffalo Soldier s Field by the Thayer Gate. Parents should plan no less than 30 minutes for parking and then the walk to Thayer Hall for the Closing Ceremony. LOCAL ACCOMMODATIONS There are numerous hotels/motels in the West Point area for family members, if necessary, or if a student is not able to depart on the graduation date. 9
