Martin County Arts Center Fort Branch Civil War Site A significant Civil War site overlooking the Roanoke River, Fort Branch is known as the best preserved earthwork Civil War site east of the Mississippi. Seven of the fort s original eleven cannons are on display there. Open to the public on weekends from April through the first weekend of November when the annual battle re-enactment is held. Home of Asa Biggs, a former U.S. Senator and federal judge. The Biggs family fled the home in 1862 under the threat of invading Union troops. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Today, it houses the Martin County Historical Society. 100 East Church St., Williamston. Call 252-789-8470. Historic Wright Brothers Mural Decorates the wall above the postmaster's office inside the Williamston Post Office. This mural has been a point of interest since 1940, when artist Philip von Saltza of North Castine, Maine, was commissioned to paint the scene as a WPA project. The artist, along with local citizens, chose a beach scene set just after the historic 1903 flight as the subject for the mural.
