From the ESTATE MANAGERS OFFICE GARDENS The flower beds and lawns in Trumpeters Loop are looking good after the rain. St Johns Garden service is really doing a great job. They are now very busy cleaning the weeds out of the flower beds. Some of the blooms are a vision to behold. CLUBHOUSE The swimming pool becomes very popular when we have lots of sunshine on warm summery days. This venue is perfect for children s swimming parties, especially when a water slide is combined with a jumping castle. The lapa s are also well used for casual braais and parties. Recently one of the Estate Agencies hosted a Potjie kos competition using a boma and the two lapa s. It turned out to be a great success with the Estate Managers enjoying a tasty meal after the judging had taken place. [See photos to follow in this emag] VOLLEY BALL COURT An insurance broker has offered to build us a volley ball court in the Clubhouse grounds. The Committee will be deciding on a suitable location. 4

NO DOGS ALLOWED Residents please take note that no dogs are allowed in the Clubhouse grounds. On three occasions we have found owners with their dogs in the swimming pool area and in the grounds, despite notices at the Clubhouse entrance gates. Prayer Walkers THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD I shall not want When the Lord is your shepherd He cares for you in every aspect of life. He carries you when you are tired and weak. He is your source for every need we have to live here on earth. Green pastures denote a supply of enough food; Lie down shows rest, no running around looking for something to eat. No rushing here and rushing there. He leads me beside still waters He gives us peace and calmness and quietness in this busy rushing life style of today. He brings about a special quietness in our inner being. He restores my soul Jesus frees our minds from stress, tension and especially fear. We fear we will be attacked on the road in our cars by hijackers, we fear that we will be attacked in our homes beaten and raped by thieves and gangsters. JESUS is our restorer. He leads me in paths of righteousness, for His names sake. Jesus is our righteousness. The Word of God tells us. We are the righteousness of God in Christ.. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Christ. [2 Corinthians 5:21] Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. The valley of life threatening sickness and diseases, life threatening dangers that we are in every day in this modern fast living world. We are walking through..not stopping or staying. Jesus is our light, our guide, He has given us eternal life. He is carrying us through to the other side. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies God blesses us with good things and our enemies see it and are perplexed. 7

Psalm 104:14 & 15 He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, And vegetation for the service of man, That He may bring forth food from the earth, And wine that makes glad the heart of man. Oil to make his face shine, And bread which strengthens man s heart. You anoint my head with oil; and my cup runs over. Our Good Shepherd God almighty supplies us with all of this because He loves us. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. This is the promise of God for us for today. Psalm 92:12-15 The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree, He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those who are planted in the house of the Lord Shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing, To declare that the Lord is upright; He is my rock, And there is no unrighteousness in HIM. Norman Padoa 8

Before you start your road trip It s that time of year and many of us will be embarking on a long road trip to reach our holiday destination. Before you leave, you may want to consider the following useful reminders on good driving habits: Following Distance It's a good idea to always keep a minimum 3 seconds gap between you and the car in front. When it's raining and/or foggy double the distance to 6 seconds no matter what speed you're doing. Smooth driving Don't rush into things. Plan ahead when driving. Make early decisions on braking and accelerating. Change gears and brake smoothly to avoid skidding. This will provide a smoother drive for yourself and your passengers while also providing less wear and tear on the vehicle and helping you save on fuel costs. Keep left unless overtaking When driving on a dual lane road always keep to the left lane. Use the right hand lane for overtaking, turning right or when road works are being carried out and there is no other choice. Indicate early Always indicate when changing lanes, 30 metres wherever practical, to advise other motorists of what you are doing. Expect the unexpected Drive with your line of sight parallel to the road not looking down onto it. By doing this you see further into the distance so you can be better prepared if there is a problem ahead. It may even mean you can avoid a crash. Stopping before the intersection Always slow down coming to an intersection especially if you are towing. Your braking distance will be greater than when you're not towing, so make sure you allow for this. Driving at night Leave a bigger gap between you and the car in front to allow for your reduced vision and reaction time. Road rage Stay relaxed and try not to let other people's driving skills or decisions worry you. If another driver makes a mistake don't get angry just concentrate on your own driving skills, behaviour and safety. If another driver is courteous towards you, then acknowledge the good deed with a wave. http://www.mynrma.com.au/motoring-services/road-safety/safer-driving/country/holidays.htm 9

Festive Recipes Decorative Christmas Biscuits This is a lovely snack for the family while relaxing with hot chocolate by the Christmas tree. METHOD Sift the flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl and set aside. INGREDIENTS 1 kg Sasko Cake Flour 5 ml baking powder 5 ml table salt 250 g butter 375 g sugar 2 medium eggs 10 ml vanilla essence 100 g Safari Currants 2 medium egg whites 250 g icing sugar 5 ml lemon zest Makes about 60 biscuits This recipe is reproduced with the kind permission of www.ilovecookingsa.co.za In a separate bowl, beat the butter and sugar and add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla essence, the flour mixture and currants and mix well until a dough forms. Cover, and place in the fridge for 10 minutes to rest. Remove the dough from the fridge, and roll out on a clean surface sprayed with non-stick spray. Press out any shapes you like using cookie cutters. Place the cookies on a baking sheet sprayed with nonstick spray and allow to rest before baking in an oven preheated to 170 ºC for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and while still hot, pierce a hole in the top of each cookie with a skewer, to thread string through later. Set aside to cool. To make the icing, combine the egg whites, icing sugar and lemon zest in a large bowl and mix well. You can add any food colouring of your choice. Spoon the mixture in to a piping bag and decorate the biscuits to your liking. Thread string through the holes, and use as delicious Christmas tree decorations. 10

W ith all the recent interest around the ground-breaking landing of Philae (a robotic landing and transmitting device) on a comet, you may find yourself looking up at the skies with wonder. Besides the breath-taking beauty of the skies on any given day, there are always exciting things happening in the heavens above us. Keep an eye out between the 13 th and 15 th of December when you may be lucky enough to see the Geminids meteor shower. It will be best viewed between 11 pm and 2am before the moon rises. Known as one of the most rewarding meteoric shows to observe, it will be worth your effort. Ideally you will want to be away from city lights in an open area which will give you a clear view and allow at least an hour to enjoy up to 50 meteors shooting past our planet! For more info including free downloads visit the Astronomical Society of South Africa at http://assa.saao.ac.za/ and the Johannesburg Planetarium at http://www.planetarium.co.za/ NATURE FEATURE Of interest too this month is our summer solstice. This will occur on December 21 and is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year, marking the official start of summer. W ishing all Residents of The Wilds a Wonderful Festive Season, Safe Travels and a very Happy New Year! The Wilds HOA and the team at Glovent 16
