FROM THE PREZ. over, you all jumped in again to save the day I m sure the quick response saved a lot of car damage when tents tried to become air born. Thanks again for your involvement. Sunday s attendance at the Raymond Chili/Chowder feed was appreciated by the Raymond Car Show Group. Six cars went from our club, which comprised about half of the attendance. All had a good time and some great eats not to mention some neat drawing prizes. Try to plan on attending our mini-cruise to Bundy s Drive-in in Clatskanie on May 13 th. We ll leave the Aquatic center at 5:15 pm. We ll have a good burger and a good time. Our May meeting will be held on the 15th at my shop, 35232 Helligso Lane, Astoria, OR. at 7:00 pm. See you there. Steve Jordan From the Prez Thank You All of you members who stepped up and came out to help with our 50 s Car Show. Twenty members came out for breakfast on Friday morning, preceding the show set-up. It sure made set-up fast & easy. During the event, when the wind tried to take I was in the restaurant yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to pass gas. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my gas with the beat of the music. After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me...
Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my ipod. FROM THE BACK SEAT The gals page Hi Doll, by Judy Jordan Club Members who need a little Sunshine The names below have been submitted by the Sunshine Committee. Those listed below are our fellow members and need you Joe White Vicki Clayton Darlene Langlo Know someone not up to speed let Judy Jordan, Sunshine Committee chair know. Judy s phone number is: (503) 325-1807 Recently I was reading some of the memoirs my cousin has written about her child hood, she mentioned coming to my home and playing with my storybook dolls, so that send me on a mission to see what I have. I found 2 of them in my cedar chest, I know I had more of them, but do not know what happened to them. I imagine if some of you go looking, you will find some also. Here is a little information on the storybook dolls. They are so very pretty and bring back such fond memories. Nancy Ann Abbott, the creator of the storybook dolls, was born in 1901 as Rowena Haskin. She lived in San Francisco as a child, and had a fondness for dolls that lasted her entire life. Before becoming a doll maker, she worked as an actress in Hollywood, and also as a dress designer for various actresses.
In 1936 the Nancy Ann Dressed Doll Company was born. In 1937 she added a partner, Les Rowland. The company s name became the familiar, Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls, Inc, in 1945. During the late 1940s, Nancy Ann Storybook Dolls was the highest volume maker of dolls in the United States! The company did very well until the late 1950 s, when Ms. Abbott was diagnosed with cancer and Mr. Roland also became ill. Quality declined during Ms. Abbott s illness and new dolls such as Barbie were becoming more popular with little girls at the same time. The company went out of business in 1965 after the death of Ms. Abbott. As for the value of the dolls, I imagine it can vary from $5.00 or $10.00 up into the $1000.00 s. There is information other company s did copy her dolls. The internet would be a great place to find out if yours is a real Nancy Ann Storybook doll. I am not sure if my dolls are the real thing, but I don t care, as I have had many years of fond memories by owning them! Words worth mentioning Last month, Patty and I hosted the club meeting at my shop. The experience was great! There was some cleaning that was done, and in preparation, we made some popcorn and supplied some beverages and a dessert was served up after the meeting. I think one of the nice things about having the meeting here was I didn t have to travel anywhere else. For those that live in Svensen/Knappa area our place was close by. For someone to travel here from Astoria it would be approximately 10ish miles. Depending on where you re coming from. I like the thought about changing up the location every once in a while. I like to see what some of the other club members shops look like, and to see what they may have in the works for projects. In June we will have another opportunity when we go to Fred and Ann Mestrich s. If you would like to Host a club meeting at your place, let our President Steve know and we can schedule. On another subject, I would like to have some articles for the Backfire. Send me an article about something you think club members would like to hear about. Here is some idea s.
