Come in and experience boutique shopping at its very best. 711 Commercial Avenue, Anacortes classicstyleco.com 360-724-8050 a message from the president June is one of my favorite months of the year. It feels like everything is alive and the town is filled with fun events. It s time when we run into our neighbors and welcome our guests. On Friday, June 2 is the Waterfront Festival Kick-off Dinner produced by the Port of Anacortes. That evening is also the kick off of the chamber sponsored ArtWalk (Friday 6:00-9:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am-4:00 pm). New this year is a combination of Open Streets and the First Friday Art Walk. Commercial Avenue between 4th and 6th street will be closed to vehicles from 6:00 9:00 pm on June 2, July 7 and September 1 for a Street Plaza setting. People will be able to shop late, dine and socialize in an outdoor setting, while listening to live music. Our own Waterfront Festival will be in full swing Saturday, June 3rd and Sunday, June 4th. You can read more about all the fun activities later in the newsletter or online at www.anacortes.org. The Community Plaza Dance will be held on Saturday at 6:00-8:00 pm at the Depot. June also kicks off live music in many outdoor venues: the Heart of Anacortes, Seafarer s Park, the Depot, and Cap Sante Marina thanks to so many community sponsors for providing these entertainment opportunities. The much-awaited spray pad at Storvik park will open in June providing joy and fun for families throughout what is surely to be a beautiful summer. The Independence Day Parade is scheduled for 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 4, with the town photo taking place at 10:00 am on the corner of 5th and Commercial Ave. We would love to see more businesses and community organizations building true parade floats. Enjoy our beautiful island getaway! Stephanie Hamilton President meet your board Teresa Wainman Teresa Wainman was born and raised in Seattle and always considered the Northwest her home. But after high school things changed dramatically for her family. They moved to California and then Hawaii, not to return permanently to the Northwest for many years. Meanwhile, Teresa headed to Los Angeles where she completed undergraduate studies at U.C.L.A. and then ultimately graduated from Whittier College School of Law. During that period she and her husband Daryl raised two sons. But Teresa always knew she would return to the Northwest, so after practicing law in Los Angeles for 25 years, she and Daryl decided to turn the page and begin a new chapter. They had been frequent visitors to Anacortes through the years, often visiting Teresa s parents who retired on Guemes Island. During those trips they felt drawn to the beauty, freedom and abundant outdoors activities readily available to everyone. Not surprisingly, plenty of rainy summer afternoons were spent trying to occupy two little boys so, a favorite stop in Anacortes was always San Juan Lanes. In 2008 San Juan Lanes came up for sale and in September 2010 the Wainman s along with their son Ethan moved to Anacortes and took over the business. Teresa s urge and instinct to work and be productive was strong and so, the challenge of mastering the art of being a small business owner took hold. She had always been an employee; now she was an employer. Shocking new reality! And the notion that it s a whole new world being in business for yourself came into focus. Soon she realized that her business was a part of a larger community that was very important to the vitality of Anacortes and its citizens and if they all succeeded then the town would thrive. Running San Juan Lanes Bar & Grill has been a challenge, but also the perfect portal for meeting neighbors, making friends, and getting to know Anacortes. We are fortunate to hear, the good and the sometimes not so good, of what people really think! For that we are grateful, because we can benefit from that public opinion. Growing and developing Anacortes in keeping with the intentions and needs of its citizens is a primary goal of Teresa in joining the Chamber s Board. Being a small business owner has been very enlightening of the difficulties faced in keeping the lights on, the doors open and making a profit in this state. Teresa is sensitive to those challenges and is highly motivated to support those fellow businesses in Anacortes to be successful, and also to bring more varied and needed small businesses to town. 2

A T T H E F R A M E M A K E R Regional Fine Art and Custom Picture Framing 420 Commercial Ave. Anacortes 360-293-6938 www.scottmilo.com member profile In 1996, Shane and Jennifer Aggergaard started a small whale watching company with a wooden fishing boat. 21 years later, Island Adventures has grown to the largest whale watching company in Washington state operating three state-of-the-art vessels out of five departure locations. 2017 represents the biggest year in company history by welcoming the brand-new Island Explorer 5 to Anacortes. This Australian designed, La Conner built vessel was the brainchild of Aggergaard, who s wanted to design a whale watching vessel from the ground up his entire career. After two years of design and over 50,000 man hours, the Island Explorer 5 is ready to carry poster unveiling approximately 30,000 passengers annually. Anacortes has become the destination for whale watching in the Pacific Northwest, drawing in tens of thousands of people from all over the globe. With the new vessel (Island Explorer 5), Island Adventures ushers in a new era that will change whale watching in the area forever. They can now comfortably cruise at 25 knots and there s enough room for everyone inside and out. The added speed and comfort gives them an unparalleled tour through the San Juan Islands. Island Adventures continued growth drives the passion to show the world-class scenery and its amazing whales/wildlife. Island Adventures strives to create magical memories that will their guests a lifetime. Since 1996 they have been committed to offering passengers much more striving to exceed guests expectations each and every day. Island Adventures is a home-grown, family owned company. They are honored to be able to live and work in this wonderful community of Anacortes and are happy to contribute to many programs here in Skagit County and beyond. In addition to monetary donations, Island Adventures has given thousands of whale watching gift certificates to local charities, support to the Anacortes STEM program and fundraisers for local service groups. The finest whale watching boat on the entire west coast (if not the world) is now running from Anacortes. On Thursday, May 4th, we celebrated the annual Waterfront Festival Poster Unveiling event.
