IT ABES Pircher & Partner GmbH Research & Development Company Presentation March 2014
What we do ABES is an independent software house. ABES offers specialised solutions for bridge engineers. ABES geodes/geocon supports geometry control for pre-cast segmental bridge construction. ABES crosswind supports wind dynamic analyses for long-span and high-rise structures. 2
Who we are ABES consists of a team of dedicated software and bridge engineers. ABES directors have a strong background in research & development, as well as in hands-on engineering project execution. Martin Pircher, PhD Paul Pieringer, PhD 3
ABES geodes ABES geodes assists in defining segmental bridges with a great degree of detail and precision. 4
ABES geodes Deck geometry based on road or rail alignments using first principles in plan view and elevation. Alignements consist of straights, clothoids, arcs in plan; and arcs and parabulas in elevation. Unlimited number of alignments. Secondary alignments at variable 3D offsets possible. Selected locations along axes for connection with abutments, piers etc. Alternative input using pre-processed alignment data instead of first principle alignments. 5
ABES geodes Parametric cross-sections with variable measurements along alignment. Cross-sections to adapt in geometry according to the position along the alignment. Alignment intersection with cross-section plane. Control points for subsequent geometry control in ABES geocon. 6
ABES geodes Segments: match-cast segments, pier segments, cast in-situ segments, wet joints etc. Each segment can be defined to great detail depending on segment type. Joints can be at free angle to alignment in plan and elevation. Modelling of diaphragms or blisters etc. Fixed length, or adaptive segment length. Match-casting against one other segment plus bulkhead, or conjugate segments at both sides. 7
ABES geodes Segment groups defined for typical segment sequences (e.g. typical cantilevers, typical spans etc.). Segment groups are placed on alignments to form the bridge structure. Individual segments can be placed as a tangent or secant to the alignment (or transition between the two). 8
ABES geocon ABES geocon is used at casting yards to support geometry control of pre-cast segments in short-line match-casting. 9
ABES geocon ABES geocon supports setting out of casting cells. Adjustment of conjugate segments to achieve desired deck geometry. Correction of casting errors surveyed in previous segments. 10
ABES geocon Correction of casting errors using a novel mathematical approach. No limitations of the number of control points. Control points can be placed anywhere on the crosssection; and can be placed anywhere within the segment. Innovative algorithm provides instant feedback and optimum results. 11
ABES geocon Horizontal match-casting typical for bridge decks. Vertical match-casting for piers or pylons also supported. Visualisation of Nipigon bridge in Canada. Match-casting of pylons to be supported by ABES geocon. 12
ABES geocon Optional functionality to support management of large casting yards. Unlimited number of casting cells. Unlimited number of survey stations. Input of casting yard layout including positions of casting cells and survey stations. Tracking of casting yard layout in case of repositioning of casting cells or survey stations. Book keeping of which segments are cast in which casting cells, and which casting cells are occupied and which ones are free. 13
ABES geodes / geocon Open architecture allows for compatibility with other software platforms. Cut & paste of input and results tables to Excel or other spreadsheet software. Spreadsheet data can be pasted directly into ABES input screens. Automated report output in table or pdf format. All geometry data can be exported to.dxf format for further processing in CAD packages. 14
ABES geocon Selected project references. F11 Hunter Expressway, Australia. Tuas West Extension, Singapore. Kampung Melayu Tanah Abang Viaduct, Indonesia. Bukit Panjang, Malaysia. Decades of practical experience by VSL incorporated through development cooperation. 15
ABES crosswind ABES crosswind is a toolbox for wind dynamic evaluation of long-span and tall structures. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code to simulate interaction between cross-section and surrounding airflow. 16
Computation of lift, drag & moment diagrams; Flutter parameters; Vortex shedding. ABES crosswind Flutter analysis: single mode and coupled multimode. 17
ABES geocon Selected project references. Grimsel Pass Bridge, Switzerland. Ewijk Bridge, Netherlands. Dobra Chanti Bridge, India. ABES provides software and associated engineering services. 18
