boo k earl y - sa ve 400 PER PERS ON Aldabra - Last Sanctuary A voyage from Tanzania to Mauritius aboard the MS Island Sky 3rd to 16th January 2016

Zanzibar TANZANIA Dar es Salaam Assumption Island Nosy Mangabé Ile St Marie INDIAN OCEAN Aldabra Diego Suarez Masoala National Park Chameleon Aldabra MADAGASCAR La Reunion Mauritius Join us aboard the MS Island Sky for a voyage through the extraordinarily beautiful islands of the Seychelles and onwards to Madagascar and finally Mauritius. Along the way, explore some breathtakingly beautiful islands, witness the diverse and fascinating wildlife and experience some marvellous snorkelling. From our first port of call, the exotic island of Zanzibar just off the East African coast, we will make our way out into the Indian Ocean visiting Aldabra, the world s largest coral atoll and a World Heritage Site. Totally untouched by the modern world, Aldabra has been described by Jacques Cousteau as the last unprofaned sanctuary on this planet. Being one of the most difficult places in the world to access and having a lack of freshwater has saved Aldabra from any tourism development. There is no landing strip and the only viable means of reaching this untouched region is by ship. Only small vessels such as the MS Island Sky are allowed to visit Aldabra and even such visits as these are rare events. Be one of the few who have explored this Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. Aldabra is the last breeding ground of the giant tortoise and in addition to seeing some of these endearing creatures you should encounter dolphins, turtles and whales as well as countless birds including the flightless rail, the last flightless bird in the Indian Ocean. Following on from our time in the Seychelles, we sail to the thousand mile long island of Madagascar where the animals, plants, landscapes and people are unlike anywhere else. This extraordinary country has long remained obscure as a destination and is still relatively unknown even amongst the most serious of travellers. The long separation from the African mainland has given rise to its amazing number of unique species of flora and fauna. Its people are also unique, having descended from Malay-Polynesian mariners who sailed from South East Asia between 1500 to 2000 years ago. Later arrivals included slaves from Africa, traders from Arabia, India and Portugal and more latterly French colonials. Our experienced expedition team will provide commentary on all that we see and will reveal the wonders of the world s eighth continent. Prior to reaching our final port of call, Mauritius, we visit its nearest neighbour, Reunion where we will spend the day exploring its truly awesome and dramatic scenery. Our View Some regions are simply perfect for expedition cruising and this is epitomised by the Indian Ocean. After the vibrancy of our call in Zanzibar we find ourselves amongst the natural wonders of small islands, remote atolls and wild forests as we search for flora and fauna that abounds in the region. Our small ship has the advantage of being one of the few vessels allowed to call at Aldabra, a natural wonder in the heart of the Indian Ocean whilst we can also anchor in Antongil Bay to access the Masoala National Park. We will offer a range of walks in forests so whether you re interested in birds, flowers or wildlife an expert will be on hand to assist whilst snorkelling trips will be enhanced by our onboard marine biologists. The Itinerary Day 1 London to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Fly by scheduled indirect flight. Day 2 Dar es Salaam. Arrive this afternoon and transfer to the MS Island Sky for embarkation. Sail this evening for Zanzibar where we will arrive tonight for an overnight mooring. Boobies, Aldabra Day 3 Zanzibar. Here the colourful harbour will be crowded with dhows, very much setting the scene for our visit to the Arab style city with its long narrow streets, bazaars, houses with overhanging balconies and intricately carved doorways. Out of town there are magnificent brilliant white sandy beaches and lush vegetation with plantations of cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg which fill the air with heady aromas. There will be a choice of tours this morning. Choose to either soak up the timeless atmosphere of Stone Town including Livingstone House, Sultans palace, the slave market and the old Fort or alternatively visit a spice farm to experience the various fruits and spices cultivated on the island. Everything from jackfruit to coconuts, turmeric and vanilla to lipstick trees. Island Sky & tortoise Day 4 At sea. Enjoy a relaxing day at sea as we cruise to the Seychelles. Maybe join a lecture in the lounge, settle down with a book in the library or enjoy some time on deck. Days 5 to 7 Aldabra & Assumption Island, Seychelles. We have two and a half days to enjoy the Aldabra group of islands. We will clear immigration on the island of Assumption which was ruthlessly plundered for its vast deposits of guano in the early 20th century. Happily, peace has returned and the wildlife of rare birds and green turtles are once again in abundance. We will enjoy time here to beachcomb and snorkel before sailing the short distance to Aldabra. Here we go ashore to the island referred to by Sir Julian Huxley as One of nature s treasures and should belong to the whole world. Aldabra is unique and we are privileged visitors by kind permission of the Seychelles government. Every time we call at what is believed to be the world s largest atoll we find something new of interest. Sightings have been made of the extremely rare Whitethroated rail, whilst it is also home to the largest crab, the coconut crab. Whilst exploring by Zodiac it is difficult to know in which direction to look. The clear blue seas abound with colourful life, the skies are alive with varied birdlife and ashore giant land tortoises forage as they have done for millions of years. On our final day we will return to Assumption for immigration purposes before sailing to Madagascar.

Ring Tailed Lemurs Exploring by Zodiac Day 8 Diego Suarez, Madagascar. At day break we will arrive at Diego Suarez, a stunning natural harbour with a cosmopolitan mix of inhabitants, Creoles, Indians, Chinese, Comorans, and Arabs. If weather and local conditions permit we will make our way to the Malagasy rainforest at the Mount Amber National Park. Dividing into short and long walk parties we will go in search of lemurs and explore the rainforest. If this is not possible we will instead visit the Domaine de Fontenay where we will explore the reserve rich with flora, fauna and several waterfalls. On our return to the MS Island Sky we will take a detour to the bay of Diego with its impressive views of the sugar loaf and also home to the indigenous baobab suareziensis tree. This afternoon is spent at sea as we cruise the Madagascan coastline. Day 9 Nosy Mangabe. After a morning at sea we arrive at Nosy Mangabe, a 520 hectare island reserve in Antongil Bay containing one of the most diverse areas of virgin rainforest in Madagascar. It has also been an important research centre since the mid-1960s when La Reunion several aye-ayes and lemurs were released into the forest. We will use our Zodiacs to land on the beach next to the forest and organise a series of nature walks looking at the varied trees, plants and ferns and also hope to spot chameleon, lizards and black and white ruffed lemur. For the birders we will keep an eye out for Madagascar buzzard, kingfisher and paradise flycatchers. Day 10 Masoala National Park. We remain in Antongil Bay overnight and visit Madagascar s largest protected area, the Masoala National Park which comprises of coastal rainforest, flooded forests, marsh and mangroves. Mammal species encountered include the red-ruffed lemur, the red-fronted brown lemur, the aye-aye, the greater hedgehog tenrec, the fossa and the ring tailed mongoose. The park is also home to various species of brightly coloured Mantella frogs and all manner of extraordinary chameleons. Masoala is also a refuge of the endangered Madagascar red-owl and Madagascar serpent eagle and many endemic bird species. We will use our Zodiacs to land and will arrange a number of hikes in the pristine forest. Day 11 Ile Ste Marie, Madagascar. Our last call in Madagascar is on Ile Ste Marie, also known as Nosy Bohara. In the 17th and 18th century it was a popular base for pirates that used the secluded bays to plunder ships returning from the East Indies. Today it is a lush tropical island offering us sandy beaches, coral reefs and natural beauty. We will explore the capital of Ambodifotatra including the pirate cemetery and the oldest church in Madagascar built in 1837. Over lunch we will find a spot to launch the Zodiacs for a final snorkelling opportunity. Day 12 At sea. A final day to relax onboard and attend lectures as we sail to La Reunion. Day 13 La Reunion. Today we will visit the central highlands where spectacularly rugged peaks of dormant or extinct volcanoes Prices per person Based on double occupancy cradle huge amphitheatres known as cirques, where mountains tower to over 10 000 feet and beautiful waterfalls plummet hundreds of feet. The rich soil and mellow climate produce a lush and verdant landscape which is dotted with villages and towns with a uniquely French atmosphere. Fields of sugar cane and plantations of tropical fruits, vanilla and all manner of spices perfume the air. Day 14 Mauritius to London. Disembark this morning and transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight to London. MS Island Sky The much loved MS Island Sky is one of the finest small ships in the world. With a maximum passenger capacity of only 114, a vessel of her size is capable of carrying many more but instead the MS Island Sky has the benefit of unusually large suites, luxuriously appointed public areas and spacious outside decks. Premium suite Library Lounge Onboard there is a high ratio of crew to passengers. Our friendly crew of 75 are mainly Filipino and Eastern European and our Scandinavian captains are experienced mariners, having been in service aboard large 2000 plus passenger vessels and who now prefer a less frantic life aboard a small ship. If, like them and us, you prefer a more peaceful life at sea, you will find the MS Island Sky the perfect ship. When choosing the vessel for your next voyage of discovery, you can select a ship with endless entertainment and impersonal service or come with us where peace, high quality service and attention to detail are the order of the day. There will be no organised entertainment, fancy dress, deck games or any of the usual big ship experiences. The atmosphere onboard is more akin to a private yacht or country hotel. A little music in the lounge or bar after dinner, informative port briefings and presentations from our expedition team and of course good food which may be enjoyed leisurely in the attractive dining room, all contribute to making any voyage aboard the MS Island Sky a memorable experience. After a day ashore you will return to the comfort and peace of a well run and exceedingly comfortable ship. Your Space The spacious and finely decorated public rooms include a large lounge where daily briefings and talks will be provided throughout the voyage and an elegant bar where a pianist plays periodically throughout the day. The onboard library is the perfect place to relax with a book. Daily newspapers and magazines are placed in the library depending on local availability. Outside there is a rear sun deck, a bar and comfortable deck furniture for sun bathing or relaxing with a book. On the top deck there is a Jacuzzi and further observation and sun deck.

Coffee Station Staff Cabin Staff Cabin Dining on deck Superior suite Your Dining Another benefit of a small ship is the quality of the cuisine. With only one sitting and a maximum of just over 100 passengers, the galley is able to provide delicious meals. Where possible and when it meets his high standards, the chef will obtain local produce in markets or buy the catch of the day from a passing fishing boat. In the main elegant dining room, breakfast is served buffet-style, with certain items cooked to order and lunch and dinner is à la carte. When weather permits, breakfast and a buffet-style lunch are also served on deck. To enhance your dining experience even further a selection of wines are included with lunch and dinner. Afternoon tea is served in the lounge and tea and coffee are available 24 hours. Your Suite Onboard there are 57 exceptionally spacious and well designed suites. All feature a sitting room area and some have private balconies. The feeling of luxury is enhanced by the wood panelling and brass, which predominates throughout the vessel conveying the atmosphere of a private yacht. The passenger accommodation is arranged over five decks and all suites have outside views. Each affords considerable comfort with en-suite bathroom featuring marble-topped vanity unit with sink and walk-in shower, large wardrobes, dressing table with large mirror and stool and excellent storage. There is a mini-fridge, flat screen television with inbuilt DVD/CD player and a telephone in each suite. Bottled water, Molton Brown toiletries, towelling dressing gowns and slippers are also provided for your comfort. Other facilities include a programmable electronic safe, hairdryer, assorted toiletries and air-conditioning and heating. This cruise visits out of the way destinations. You will be accompanied by an expedition team and landings ashore will often be made by Zodiac landing craft. Cruises such as this will appeal to the more adventurous and those who enjoy the natural world.
