The great spring exhibition, held at Museo di Santa Giulia, will be devoted to Titian and 16 th Century Painting between Venice and Brescia. The exhibition focuses on the great Venetian painter, and primarily on the two key works he painted in Brescia: the polyptych commissioned by Bishop Altobello Averoldi and painted between 1520 and 1522 for the collegiate church of Santi Nazaro and Celso, and the three paintings with Allegories of Brescia, he painted several years later, in the sixties of the 16 th century, for the Salone della Loggia, paintings that were destroyed by a fire in 1575. The exhibition is closely linked to the reopening of Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, which, after having being closed for 9 years, has finally moved back to its historic location in Piazza Moretto. Its collections include some extraordinary examples of works produced by 16 th century artistic culture in Brescia and Venice. From 21 st March to 1 st July 2018, the connection between the two events will be further strengthened by the opportunity to buy one joint ticket for the exhibition, the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, as well as the Diocesan Museum. A comprehensive tour including the Collegiate church of Santi Nazaro e Celso (with Averoldi Polyptych), the shrine of Sant'Angela Merici and several other churches within the city of Brescia and its province is also part of the tourist offering. The exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Brescia and Fondazione Brescia Musei and organized by Civita Mostre. It follows-up on previous exhibitions devoted to the great masters of ancient painting. It will be an opportunity to better appreciate and get to know some of Titian s masterpieces, to revisit the echo of Titian s art among the leading Brescian painters of his time, i.e. Girolamo Romanino, Moretto, and Giovan Girolamo Savoldo, while recounting the events leading up to the decoration and expansion projects of Palazzo della Loggia, in which also Andrea Palladio was involved. In other words, Titian s influence on the development of Brescian painting is successfully highlighted in this exhibition. As a matter of fact, Averoldi polyptych marks a watershed in the history of 16 th century painting in Brescia, because of the significant chain reaction it triggered among the most receptive local artists. This is clearly evidenced by the fact that the artistic training of Romanino, which allegedly began at the end of the first decade of the 16 th century, as well as of Moretto, which took place a little later, was constantly referred to Titian's works. Further, both artists when young had lived and studied in Venice. Savoldo s case is somehow different, since he first began to have contacts with Titian when he moved to Venice around 1515, when he was about 35 years old. The familiarity of the Brescian artists with Titian and the Venetian environment does not only relate to their artistic style, but it is significantly confirmed by the same type of representation, particularly in paintings for private devotion.
To best illustrate said relationship, Francesco Frangi, the exhibition s curator, with the support of a prestigious scientific committee, has selected over fifty masterpieces, coming from leading Italian and international museums, such as: Pinacoteca di Brera, Museo Poldi Pezzoli and Civic Art Collections of Castello Sforzesco in Milan, Musei Capitolini and Galleria Borghese in Rome, Galleria Palatina of Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Carrara Academy in Bergamo, Museo di Palazzo Bianco e Palazzo Rosso in Genoa, Gallerie dell Accademia in Venice, Pinacoteca Ala Ponzone in Cremona, Galleria Sabauda in Turin, Prado Museum in Madrid, Liechtenstein Museum and Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest, Pushkin Museum in Moscow, National Gallery in Washington. Divided into 6 sections, and curated by architects Giovanni Tortelli and Roberto Frassoni, the exhibition highlights Titian s influence on the development of Brescian painting. Through a sequence of close comparisons, it illustrates the extent to which Titian s colour studies were actually interpreted by leading local artists. For an even more interesting visit, an audio guide is provided to all visitors with the admission ticket. The rich catalogue is curated by Silvana Editoriale. For a more complete cultural offer linked to the exhibition, various activities will be organized for schools as well as for adult visitors. A comprehensive educational program has been developed to involve school students of all grades, through guided tours, workshops, and thematic tours run by the Educational Services operators of Fondazione Brescia Musei. Guided tours will also be offered to adult visitors of the exhibition as well as of other sites in Brescia and its surroundings, while specific activities will be organized for families, and conferences will be held to gain more insights into specific Renaissance related themes. In collaboration with some prestigious cultural institutions in Brescia, such as Centro Teatrale Bresciano and Luca Marenzio Conservatory in Brescia, Renaissance splendour will also be investigated through other artistic expression languages. A rich film festival held at the New Eden theatre and telling this extraordinary artistic historical period completes the programme.
