CASE CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF REGIONAL EXPERT MEETING ON PROTECTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH EDUCATION AND TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNOLOGY 26-30 SEPTEMBER 2006 SKOPJE-OHRID MACEDONIA CHwB and ICOMOS MACEDONIA CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS On the Regional Expert meeting on Cultural Heritage Protection through Regional Cooperation on Education, Transfer of Knowledge and Technology held on 26-30. September, Skopje Ohrid, Republic of Macedonia, the representatives from: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Sweden had concluded the following: - The Regional Cooperation is of great importance and is an expressed need for proper and sustainable conservation/restoration of cultural heritage on regional level; - The expected result from the Regional Cooperation is a well established and multicultural functioning network of professionals and Institutions from the region and worldwide; - The Regional cooperation should be facilitated by setting up a Regional Education Initiative Center (REIC) that would be managed in a flexible manner. For the beginning the Center is seen settled in ICOMOS premises in Skopje; 5

- The goals of Regional Education Initiative Center are: Short and long term protection of cultural heritage (CH); Appropriate utilization of the heritage; Strengthening the professional capacities and public awareness on CH issues; The expertise should be of highest excellence - The methods of obtaining the goals are: REIC is managed by committed professionals Heritage is seen as a part of strategic plans of development in the region Dialogue between general public and heritage should be established Building up the educational programmes through practical protection of heritage; Process of education on regional level should be based on short term and long term basis of education, where short term is seen as a practical workshops and training activities, and long term as building up of the recognized postgraduate studies, masters and PhD programmers Education and training should cover wide aspects of documentation, analysis, protection and conservation as well as rehabilitation and maintenance of cultural heritage Initiatives on professional exchange in the region and worldwide, Governmental and Non Governmental Institutions seen as a part of the process - The REIC is seen as a well functioning center with the structure that will be defined in the later stages through collaboration with potential partners and supporters from Governmental and Non Governmental Institutions. 6
