Dear Harford Day Families, I am pleased to invite you to join me on Harford Day s first-ever trip to Greece! We will start our tour in Athens, and visit the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum. We will also explore Plaka, and visit the excavations of the American School of Classical Studies in the Agora. Then we will leave Athens, and explore Delphi, strikingly beautiful in its position on Mt. Parnassos, and Olympia, home of the ancient Olympics, which were celebrated in honor of Zeus every fourth year beginning in 776 B.C. Next, we will spend two nights in seaside Nauplion, the first capital of modern Greece, with a day trip to Mycenae and Epidauros in between. Next, we will visit Ancient Corinth, where I excavated and studied for several years with the American School of Classical Studies. In Ancient Corinth, we will tour the ancient site and museum, Acrocorinth, the current excavations, and my family s olive groves. On our way back to Athens, we will stop at Isthmia, where I currently work each summer with the University of Chicago excavations. We will have an insider tour of the museum and site, including the sanctuary of Poseidon, and the Roman bath with its spectacular monochromatic mosaic floor. On our last day, we will do a bit of island hopping! We will take a ferry to the island of Aegina, about an hour from the Piraeus, the port of Athens. Aegina is best known for the important ancient temple dedicated to Aphaia, and its pistachios! Our trip will take place from June 16 to June 25, 2017. The tour includes airfare (non-stop flights from Philadelphia to Athens and the return trip), multiple occupancy rooms in all hotels, all local transportation costs, all breakfasts and most dinners, and all admission fees. There will be small supplements if single or double rooms are preferred. The cost per person will depend on the number of people who come on the tour, and all families are welcome! The starting cost per person is about $3400 for students (about $3500 for adults), but that will be reduced if we have more participants. Please let me know if you have questions, or would like to see a more detailed itinerary. If you are interested in joining our trip, please let me know by October 1st. Commitments and deposits will be due on October 10th. Thank you! Jen Palinkas
