Eugene woke up early Tuesday morning. He quickly threw on his clothes and then read the newspaper while chewing his breakfast cereal. Each Tuesday during the summer, he and his nephew Henry went on an adventure. Today they were hiking to Mossy Cave. 3
Last week he read about a fossil discovery near the cave. Then he called Henry and asked him if he would like to check it out. They both agreed that it would be cool to find a few fossils. 4
Honk, honk! sounded Eugene s green jeep as it pulled into Henry s driveway. Henry flew out of the door of the house and jumped into the passenger seat of Eugene s jeep. 5
Henry, my favorite nephew! said Eugene as he gave him a high five. I already knew that, since I am your only nephew, laughed Henry. You two be careful! shouted Henry s mom from the door. And don t be gone too long. Henry has a curfew. Don t worry, sis, replied Eugene as he drove away. We will be back before dinner. 6
When they arrived at Mossy Cave, they put on their jackets, headlamps, and hard hats. Eugene put the backpack on his back, and they went inside. Watch out for slippery rocks, said Eugene. It looks like a lot of moss and mildew grew in this part of the cave. 7
Carefully, Henry and Eugene walked over rocks, mud, and dirt as they scanned the walls of the cave, looking for petroglyphs. They both hoped they would find something new. 8
Suddenly, they felt the ground shake and rumble. They quickly ran back to the opening of the cave as dirt and dust fell on their heads. Just as they ran out of the opening, several big rocks and dirt fell, covering the opening. 9
Whew! That was a close call! cried Eugene. I think that was an earthquake. I m glad we didn t get trapped inside, but I also am sorry that we didn t find anything. Maybe next time, said Henry. Now, let s go home and have some of Mom s awesome stew. As they walked back to the jeep, Henry tripped over a big, odd-shaped stone. When he stood up, he took a closer look at the stone. He drew in a big breath and shouted, Eureka! I think I ve found a fossil, and it is big! Come and look! Eugene looked carefully at the big, odd-shaped stone and then grinned at Henry. 10
Well, favorite nephew, he said, I think you have just tripped over the backbone of a dinosaur. We should take this to the museum in town and have a scientist look at it. You might have made a famous discovery after all. 11
