Well, after having one of the warmest February on record, March was pretty bad. Do you believe it, not one ride, but the good thing is there are a lot of rides planned ahead. We have one of our most important rides of the year coming up. On Saturday April 15 th,leaving from the VFW Hall at 11 am, is our Easter Bunny ride to Winthrop Hospital. This will be our 15 th year doing this ride. We bring stuffed animals, toys and games to the children in the hospital for the holiday. The look on kids faces when they see an Easter Bunny come riding in on a Harley with gifts is unbelievable. This ride is open to everyone no matter what they ride so tell and bring all your friends. Please make every effort to join us on this ride. After our April monthly meeting, we will have our Annual Bike Blessing follow by a ride and lunch. We will also be raffling off a Jack Daniels Barrel Cover. May will be the Mother s Day Ride where we ride to the homes of some of the mothers in our live s and bring them flowers. Be sure to sign up at April s meeting so no one gets left out. There is still time to sign up and book your rooms for any of our overnight trips this summer. If you haven t done so get on it you do not want to miss a thing. Last but not least our Asst. Head Road Captain Gary Kinkel has stepped down. It was great working with him his hard work will be missed. As always, we are the lookout for new members and volunteers for our club so spread the word. RIDE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT, BE SAFE! Monthly Meeting March 26, 2017 Nicole from the Child Life program at Winthrop Hospital spoke with us at this month s meeting about our upcoming visit. It's a special ride for us because of the children. It's tough to spend a holiday in the hospital. You can spread a little cheer by joining us on this ride. Invite some friends! If you would like to bring a gift for the children some suggestions are coloring books, play dough, stuffed animals & legos. A huge thank you to all our members at the meeting who had made a donation at the meeting on Sunday. Together we will make a donation to the Child Life Program of over $400!!!! LI Harley Riders, Inc. New And Seasoned Group Rider Safety: by Dom Mozzone, Safety Officer Each month I write an article for our newsletter regarding specific scenarios of riding that most of us have either experienced or had close calls encountering during a ride. Every time you mount up for a ride, your senses need to be sharp and your mind clear to maximize your focus on your surroundings while riding. During the last season, my articles have covered most aspects of riding that are critical to know in order to keep you safe. As with anything we do, over confidence during a ride can lead to complacency causing an ah S*&t moment to pop up unexpectedly. For our non-riding career requirements, many of us need to attend continuing education classes for our respective specialties. Continuing Ed keeps us up to date on the progress required to perform our jobs effectively and enables us to be current on the latest technology and techniques. Riding is no different, big time! Each year, we make arrangements with one of the motorcycle rider schools to conduct a rider safety class to sharpen our skills. I enroll in a rider safety course every other year and find it extremely beneficial. The courses have provided me with riding safety techniques and different course scenarios each time I have taken one. After every course I took, I was able to correct the bad habits acquired since the last class and enhance my control while riding. The course expense and time requirements are minimal; what you have to think about is what it s worth to gain the knowledge to avoid that ah S*&t moment and potentially go down. It s a no brainer!! This year is no different, at our last chapter meeting I covered the scheduled dates for our LIHR only Rider Safety Course this year, May 6 th and 27 th (Memorial Day Weekend) are still available, see our web site for the details and Kathy has emailed the club as well. Additionally, at all our meetings going forward we will be reviewing hand signals and general riding techniques we use on the road. As always your road captains are available for questions regarding any ride before and after its conducted. I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. Ride often and safely!!!!
