Welcome Fort St. James National Historic Site of Canada Hours: Open June 1 to mid September9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily Closed Wednesdays and Thursdays after Labor Day Walk down the path along the grassy banks of Stuart Lake; you'll come to the flagpole with the Hudson's Bay company flag flying in the breeze and then you will climb the stairs and walk directly into 1896. Before you lies the largest group of original buildings representing the fur trade in Canada. In these buildings our knowledgeable costumed interpreters will tell you how the fur traders and the Carrier First Nations worked together, lived, and died more that a century ago.

The fur warehouse See the huge array of fur and trade goods that fueled the economy. Smell the pungent aroma of beaver castors as you step through the door. Discover why the Fur Warehouse is the finest existing example of this kind of building in North America. 4 Fort St. James National Historic Site

The fish cache Climb the stairs to the fish cache and run your hands over the logs that were hewn in 1806 when Simon Fraser was the Chief Fur trader here. Learn why the fish cache holds the highest designation Canada can bestow on a historic building. The men's house Relax in the comfort of a very early version of the La-Z-Boy recliner while you gaze at the flames in the fireplace. See how the Carrier people make moccasins. Special events During the year, Fort St. James hosts a wide variety of special events. Some highlight themes from our past, some are community events, while others are just for the fun of it. For more information on special events, visit our website or ask at a local Tourism BC Visitor Info Centre. During the year, we host events such as: June 1st (Royals Day) Free pancake breakfast, best dressed Victorian contest, badminton, croquette, tea and cake. June 21st (National Aboriginal Day) A day in honor and respect for our aboriginal partners. July 1st (Canada Day) FREE horseback rides, historic games, birthday cake and more! August Long Weekend Caledonia Days - Who makes the best salmon in New Caledonia? The first 100 visitors to the site are the judges. Get here early and taste all the salmon. Talk to trappers, black powder experts, and re-enactors available all weekend for demonstrations. Pitch your tent on the historic grounds and spend the night in 1896. There are also several spectacular campgrounds within a 15 minute drive of the fort. Take a historic walk See other connections to the past. Ripples of the past interpretive trail takes you from the historic park on a meandering stroll through the village and cottonwood beach past the old church and the cottonwood wharf to the Russ Baker memorial and a beautiful view from the edge of a cliff looking down Stuart Lake. Ten interpretive panels along the way tell stories of the Carrier First Nation, Simon Fraser, and Chief Kw'eh. You will learn about salmon and sturgeon, the early bush pilots and the trails of yesterday that inter-connected New Caledonia. 4.5 km round trip.
