In 1941, after training at the Infantry School, Ft. Benning, Georgia, he went to the Philippine Islands. In 1942 he was captured by the Japanese, participated in the Bataan death march and was interned at various prison camps including Davao. In October of 1944, he died when the Japanese POW ship he was on~was sunk by US Air strikes. Dorothy Davis Holland lived in Roanoke, Virginia, teaching elementary school there. She became principal of a school there and was active in Girl Scouts, the Junior Ivomen's Club (president 1944-1945) and the Ivomen I s Cl ub. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND ARRANGEMENT: The collection consists of correspondence between the Hollands, D. D. Holland's correspondence, a di ary kep t ly-fv l.. Holland while in the Philippines, publications, and clippings on the Philippines, Bataan and the Pacific Theater, as well as postcards and family photographs.
