Official Newsletter of Sanderson Field R.C. Flyers Shelton, WA RC SANDERSON FIELD SHELTON, WA. FLYERS Club Meeting This months meeting will be held on Thursday August 11th from 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.. at PUD #3 At 3rd & Cota Chuck Kentfield came to the meeting and gave his treasurers report. He is looking pretty good but still very sore. Treasurers report given and accepted. Minutes read and accepted as read. Bob Beatty gave a report of the Toledo swap meet which went well. All told between our swap meet and Toledo we ended up with about $4000 from the Bowcutt estate for use on the grass field new runway. Bob Beatty gave a report on the Fun Fly that was held in place of the Pylon race Sunday June 26th. There were 9 contestants and 6 events. Lunch was provided by the club. 1st place Bob Beatty 2nd Place Eric Ide 3rd place Dick Robb. Prizes given were a galleon of fuel August 2011 Volume XIv Issue VIiI Sanderson Field R.C. News Pylon race August 20th & 21st for first and 1 year subscriptions to RC Report online for second and third. Every on had a good time. Dick Robb gave some updates on Hunters: Hunters cut the grass and will be bailed and removed. No one has checked as of this date. He also noted the first jet to be dismantled has arrived and sits right next to the fence across the runway and recommended we set up further to the North from now on to avoid flying over that area. It was also noted the pylon course should be further North also. When we move further North it was also noted we should not fly when the State Patrol is there because of the possibility of over flying them. Bob Treinen reported that the underlayment for the grass field runway would be $450 for a roll 309 X17 X 3 = $1350 The plan so far is to get the cut grass removed and lay out a smaller runway as a starting point and roll it with a big roller. The runway would then be expanded next year. Page 1 Charter No. 3079 We are also looking at building some starting stands which would have to be stored for the winter. The main thing to note about combining the field with control line flyers is that the rules will state that at no time will there be control line and RC planes in the air at the same time. The club is also looking at the possibility of buying the maintenance equipment needed to keep up the field. We really need course workers for the upcoming pylon race July 23rd & 24th, please come out and help if you can. Adjourned 8:06 Be sure to note the upcoming pylon race dates and keep your schedule clear if you want to help with either the food or the officiating.

A Fun Fly with Spice RC-Pilots Hone Their Flying Skills: A Fun Fly with Spice by Royce Tivel On July, 26, 2011, the Pylon Racers of Puget Sound (PROPS) held a Fun Fly at Sanderson Field, Shelton, WA. The PROPS pilots were joined by pilots from the Sanderson Field RC Flyers (SFRCF). There were six competitions in the fun fly. The six competitions involved only basic flying and aerobatic maneuvers, and included one event to measure a pilot s ground-handling ability: The Terrible Two s Touch and Go Bean Carry Bomb Drop Balloon Burst Taxi Some of the competitions were timed events. For example, The Terrible Two s required each pilot to takeoff, do two loops and two rolls, and land as close to two minutes as possible. CD Tom Strom Sr. noted that including the distraction of aerobatic maneuvers made it much more difficult for the pilots to keep track of the time. Distractions from other competitors, further tested a pilot s ability to concentrate on the task at hand and added spice to the event. A LITTLE SPICE Here is a bit of what happenedduring the Terrible Two s and the Bomb Drop: 00:00 Pilot-1 launches his aircraft for the Terrible Two s competition. 00:10 Pilot-2 begins telling a joke in Pilot-1 s ear: Say, did you hear the joke about the crashing airplane, three passengers, and one parachute? 00:30 Pilot-1 completes two inside loops and two rolls. Pilot-2 shouts, Only 50 seconds left! 00:40 Pilot-1 performs several aerobatic maneuvers while *his* mental clock continues to count the seconds. Pilot-2 asks Pilot-1, Say, Pilot-1, are you still making lots of trips to Eastern Washington? 01:10 Pilot-1 is very cool. He listens to the jokester and carries on a conversation about his trips to Eastern Washington-- while still maintaining his focus on his aircraft and the time. Pilot-2 advises, Just about out of time, Pilot-1. If you land right now, you ll be spot on 2 minutes. 01:30 Pilot-1 does two perfect outside loops. Pilot-2 yells, You just undid your inside loops with the two outside loops. Your going to have to do your loops again: outside loops cancel inside loops. Pilot-1 stays cool. 01:45 Pilot-2 says, Almost 3 minutes, now--too bad, Pilot-1. Pilot-1 performs a few more maneuvers and prepares to land his plane. 02:06 Pilot-1 landed his plane with an outstanding performance. After the The Terrible Two s, Touch and Go, and Bean Carry competitions, pilots prepared for the Bomb Drop. The CD prepared the bombs, balloons filled with beans, and stood by to load each of the airplanes. Pilot-2, the jokester, began the competition. The CD loaded the aircraft and Pilot-2 launched and banked right towards the big X on the runway: the target was the center of the big X. As the plane banked right, Pilot-1 planted a seed, The bomb fell out! Oh, too bad. Pilot 3 concurred, You banked just a little too hard, Pilot-2. Pilot-1: I didn t even see it fall. Pilot-4 said, Bad Page 2

A Fun Fly with Spice continued break, Pilot-2. face, Pilot-1 quietly remarked, You *never* listen to another pilot during a competition like this. Special thanks to Tom Strom Sr. (CD), Tom Strom Jr. (scorekeeper), and Eric Ide (organizing and assisting). Also, secial thanks to Julia at RC Report for donating the subscriptions used as prizes. Pilot-2 continued flying past the big X on his way to a landing approach. The CD advised Pilot-2 to complete the bombing run. You never know, he says, maybe it didn t drop out. Pilot-2 said, What s the use. They said it fell out. The CD still advised Pilot-2 to make the attempt--just in case it didn t fall out. A frustrated Pilot-2 turned the aircraft back towards the target, rolled the plane, and the bomb dropped out of the plane and hit the runway 85 feet from the target. Foul! shouted Pilot-2. That wasn t fair. With a grin of satisfaction on his After the final competitions, the Balloon Burst and the Taxi, score keeper Tom Strom Jr. calculated a final score for each pilot. The winners were Bob Beatty (first), Eric Ide (second), and Dick Robb (third). The first place winner received a gallon of fuel donated by Tom Strom Sr.. The second and third-place winners each received a premium subscription to RC Report Online, donated by RC Report. Competing pilots were Steve Mortenson, Marty Hoppe, John Calhoun, Eric Ide, Marc Winz, Dan Nalley, Bob Beatty, Dick Robb, and Burt Daggett. Notes: All pilots enjoyed the fun fly. At no time were the distractions allowed to interfere with a pilot s ability to safely control his aircraft. The pilots ability to focus on the mission --in spite of the distractions--amazed the author. The event winner flew a gas powered plane while the other winners flew electrics. Especially during the Taxi competition, the light-weight electrics were at a bit of a disadvantage in the afternoon due to a variable 5mph wind. Ed note: The fun fly was a result of poor turn out by pilots and course workers. The one this month should be better attended. First place - Bob Beatty Second place - Eric Ide Third place - Dick Robb Page 3
