Village People by Julie Yeo Teresa Broad (nee Bunce) was born in London in 1956. Adopted at six weeks old, she grew up in Greenford, Middlesex and then in Reading. Aged 12, her family (with two brothers and an adopted sister) moved to Maidenhead. It was a very loving family and Teresa told me family is the most important thing in my life and that will never change. She has now passed on these positive family values to her own children. Teresa s Reading Convent Girl School stories make this Village People very easy to write You just have to imagine a mix between Hogwarts and St Trinian s! explained, Teresa. She had me in stitches telling about her various achievements. Famous for schooling Marianne Faithful (singer/actress), Teresa and her friends used to see how many of them could get into detention by mentioning her name to the nuns, who clearly disapproved of their former pupil. I get the impression they totted up quite a few! Teresa also told me that she swam for the county as a junior and attended Reading swimming club to add to this, she managed to get herself suspended from school for four days; something to do with one of the nuns, the pool, an accidental nudge(honestly) and a large splash! She also had the honour of never completing a music lesson her love of winding up Mr Andrews (the only male member of staff) surpassed her actual love of music! Gaining the Victor Ludoram award in gymnastics seems tame in comparison. Teresa and friends would also conduct episodes as sleuths like the time a nun s name plaque disappeared and then she sadly passed away; they went exploring, found a chute to fly down only to be stuck in the boiler room for 3 hours until rescued. The hypocrisy of the nuns was very frustrating, though; more interested in outward appearance like nail varnish than serious issues. Despite this, Teresa looks back on her school days with fondness. She even made peace with her music teacher in the end after her sister had a serious accident and he helped her. Not before one final stunt at a concert in Reading Town hall where she and her friends had re written an entire classical piece based on Mr Andrew s life. He only caught on when the chorus of Mr Andrews Mr Andrews, look yonder, beware came to his attention but he continued to play, laughing as he did so! In the midst of all this school fun, Teresa s brother, John, had a 17 th birthday party with Granny in charge and it was here that a certain Adrian Broad, John s class mate, came to 14 year old Teresa s attention. 48 years later and still going strong I asked what their secret was, to which Teresa tells me that they are still growing in the same direction. Married in 1977, they moved to Somerset the next day. Teresa worked in a hospital for male adults with learning difficulties and then went to train as a nurse in Bristol. Unfortunately, she was attacked by a patient, injured her wrist and spent three years having it rebuilt. Unable to return to nursing, she started a family. Joe arrived in 1982 and Charlotte in 1984. Two months later, the family moved to Beaford. August 1990 was another special time for the Broad Family when Adrian, Joe and Charlotte drove to Heathrow to collect Teresa and Laura, just flown in from Romania. Brother and sister sat either side of her car seat the entire journey home, one finger of each of their hands held tightly. They had filled Charlotte s room with balloons and a Welcome Home banner, and had made a special cake with the help of Grandma. and doesn t this sum up the beauty of such a lovely family (now with a few additions as you can see)? kmh.devon@me.com 5

My final question was Why have you chosen to stay in Beaford to which Teresa explained It just feels right for us. People were especially supportive when we adopted Laura. We then spent another hour or so reminiscing on the times Laura came to play with my own children and many other happy memories of Beaford days. kmh.devon@me.com 6

NIGHTWALK IS BACK! The popular annual North Devon Hospice moonlit walk is back and organisers are hoping woman of all ages (over 16) will sign up to have both a great night out at the same time as supporting a great local cause. Our North Devon Hospice is providing more care during the night than ever before. Both on our Bedded Unit and in peoples own homes, the need for round-the-clock nursing is growing. Organisers hope the women of North Devon will step up to the challenge and sign up for Nightwalk on Saturday 19 th May. The date coincides with the Royal wedding so organisers believe there will be an atmosphere of celebration on the night. There will be entertainers, light installations, glow, live music, fire jugglers, free soup at Fremington Quay to add to the atmosphere along the tarka trail, not to mention a free butty and cuppa at your finish. This wonderful ladies night out is hoping to raise 100,000 towards the dedicated teams of hospice night nurses who care and support local patients and families in their homes and in our bedded unit. Starting points are at Barnstaple, Instow, Bideford, Torrington and route lengths range from 3 to 11 miles. So there really is a Nightwalk for everyone. Buses, courtesy of Stagecoach, will be on hand to take Nightwalkers back to their starting point. Sign up at www.nightwalk.co.uk Or call the Nightwalk team on 01271 347232 for a simple registration form. RING & RIDE BUS The ring & ride bus picks up at Beaford, Park View at 9.30 am Thursdays or from your house if you would prefer. It drops off at Sainsbury s and the back of Green Lanes. Home at 1 pm. First pick up for home is the back of Marks & Spencer and on to Sainsbury s. More details from Karl Williams on 01271 549680 kmh.devon@me.com 7
