Monthly Panmure Business Association Newsletter Issue 133, December 2015 bringing the community together ON saturday 5th december 2015. CHRISTMAS PARADE & FESTIVAL 2015 St patrick s school parade entry, the nativity entry

www.panmure.net.nz If your business lies within the Panmure Mainstreet area (Queens Road, Ellerslie/Panmure Highway and adjacent side streets) you are automatically a Member of Panmure Business Association and are paying.02c in the dollar of your general rates towards funding the Association. How the combined money is spent is determined by elected board members, any of whom would be happy to talk with you, tell you more about who they are, and hear your comments or suggestions. I contacted Auckland Transport and their Parking Design Team visited the site. They noted that when the post office relocated, the P10 spaces were reviewed and public consultation undertaken. It was decided that six of the twelve P10 s would be kept, and six made P60. They realised that the six P60 signs had not been installed and logged a job to rectify the signage. We noted this was completed very quickly and appreciate the speedy response from Auckland Transport. I am very unhappy that there has been a sharp increase in the number of tags in and around the town. Our contractor Graffiti Guard has been kept very busy over the past six weeks with the extra work as the taggers have been enjoying the challenge of finding ways of climbing up onto our buildings, which is a worry as we are going into the holiday season. Fortunately, Graffiti Guard will still come through Panmure throughout December/January, only stopping for the Christmas public holidays. On a more positive note, I m delighted to report that our town centre now has 29 medical outlets, which shows just how centrally located our town centre is, as we have plenty of parking and we are close to public transport routes. Health Star Medical Centre and pharmacy has just opened at 136 Queens Rd and a Turaki Health Care centre will be opening soon in the completely renovated old Westpac premises at 66 Queens Rd. A new pharmacy will open in 6 Clifton Court, right next to the Tāmaki Family Health Centre in the New Year. This has been a year of change for the PBA office: firstly with Julie, PBA Accounts Manager resigning due to ill health and in July, Lisa decided the time was right to move to a new job opportunity. I consider myself to be very lucky as both of those fantastic staff members have been replaced by equally fantastic people. Dannielle Carter now rules the Accounts Office and petty cash had better balance or else!!! Katie Chan took over a redefined role as Communications Coordinator and has blessed us with her ability to speak both mandarin and Cantonese. Taoa has embraced technology and now has magic computer fingers and aims to learn how to txt in 2016! Chris and Taoa - The parade is about to begin! My luck continued as just when Katie decided that she needed time to prepare for the birth of her first baby, I was contacted by Kylie, a friend of mine who has worked for the Sandringham Business Association and organised events. Kylie took over the organisation of the Christmas Parade and the outcome of those dedicated hours set aside just for the Parade meant that this year s Parade was very smooth and organised. Unfortunately, the traffic management company decided to cone off all the car parks along Queens Rd instead of just focussing on the Parade route/eastern end Pilkington and Queens Rd to the small roundabout. This was not part of the traffic management plan and justifiably upset a number of business owners in the western end of the town.

5 DAYS TO SHOP IN PANMURE We decided to experiment with a small promotion to coincide with the Christmas Parade, to see how much interest there was from the customers as well as finding out how many Panmure businesses would encourage their customers to enter the competition. Over the 1st 5th of December, 902 people entered the competition and 21 stores promoted the competition. The highlighted stores below collected the most entry forms. The Chinese New Settlers Services Trust (CNSST) is an accredited Community Housing Provider and will be building a four storey building containing 36, onbedroom apartments and their head office on the ground floor. The mock up of the apartment building in Clifton Court. Since being granted this opportunity by the New Zealand Government in 2013, the CNSST have been extremely busy obtaining Resource and Building Consent and networking with similar social housing providers to exchange information and ideas. The main contractor is Robert Cunningham Construction Ltd, a Panmure business whose head office is situated in 11 Forge Way. CNSST s Social Enterprise Manager, Bill Guan is very keen to ensure that the demolition of the old building and the construction of the new building will not impact too greatly on the surrounding businesses in Clifton Court. Bill has already put in place a demolition meeting so the Clifton Court businesses can meet with the Project Manager to find out more about the project timelines as Clifton Court Service Lane will be closed for the realignment of the sewer and water pipes.

Security Report Taoa is our Security Officer roving the town of Panmure. Taoa has been looking after our businesses for 12 years. Please don t hesitate to talk to Taoa about any security advice. Taoa is in Panmure Monday to Friday keeping a watchful eye over our town. He is also a Minister of the Congregational Church of Niue. The back door of a business that backs onto Dunlop Lane is repeatedly targeted by some boys who bang loudly on the door and try to damage the security grill as well. This is very frustrating for the business owner and he would appreciate any support from local businesses that may see these boys in action. Trouble Makers A group of young boys, on bicycles and skateboards are creating problems for many of our business owners as they are shoplifting or demanding that he store owner just give them what they want as they say they don t have any money. These boys are well known to us and please immediately report any such incident to the Police, get an Incident Number and let us know as well. These boys can be easily trespassed from your store. A young man asked one of our business owners if he would like to buy a power tool and a few days later, drugs. Please report such incidents to the Police and let us know as we may have CCTV footage of the incident. As we are heading towards the Festive Season, I would like to say fakaaue lahi mahaki (thank you very very much) for your continued support for myself and the PBA team but also your support for the surround business community. I wish you all a Merry and Enjoyable Christmas and I look forward to working with you all again in the New Year. May God continue to bless us all here in Panmure. PREVENTING CRIME THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN 借助环境设计提防犯罪 The layout of the store and design of the physical environment of your building can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of crime. This can also increase the feeling of safety among your staff and customers. Store design Keep windows clear of posters, shelving and advertising that block the view into the shop. Make sure people outside can see clearly into the shop. The darker your shop is, and the more hidden you are from the street, the greater the opportunity for theft and robbery. Install a good quality CCTV system. Put a video monitor and surveillance camera at the entrance so customers can see themselves in the monitor when they walk into the shop. Put up clearly visible signs that let customers know you have security measures, such as cameras and drop safes. Make sure the interior of the shop is well lit during work hours and after hours. Put the cash register at the front of the store near the main entrance. This will help deter thieves, as they will have to walk past your staff when entering or exiting the store. Make sure all areas of the shop can be seen from the sales counter. Raise the sales counter to increase visibility of merchandise. Keep shelves low so staff can see over them. Eliminate hidden or blind spots that make it easier for someone to steal items. Keep displays full and in order so staff can see at a glance if something is missing. Keep expensive goods in the back of the shop - on display but under lock and key. Train staff in loss prevention and detection techniques. Do they know how to apprehend shop thieves? Territorial design reinforcement Make sure the entrance to the store is clearly defined. This will avoid customer confusion and give good reason to question people who loiter in entrance ways. Make sure there is no easy access to the roof, from either inside or outside the building. Ensure entrances and exits are monitored and controlled. Make sure the exterior of buildings and loading areas are well lit, with no blind spots or hidden areas. Put up signs in loading areas to display designated delivery hours, giving staff justifiable reason to question trespassers. Try to ensure parking areas are clearly visible from the building or street - and preferably visible from the store. Create clear lines of sight into and around the perimeter of the store. Shrubbery should be trimmed so that the view is as clear as possible between 0.7m (2 ft) and 2.2m (7 ft), and remove other obstructions someone could hide behind. Clearly delineate private areas from public areas. This gives staff a good reason to question people hanging around areas they ought not to be. Set up barriers to keep people out of certain areas. Question any person who heads into an out of bounds area. Clearly define areas and pathways in the store for customers to browse and purchase. This will make customers feel more comfortable and will help to highlight people who are in the store for illegitimate reasons. Use signs to clearly direct customers to entrances, exits and parking areas.
