State of Tennessee Department of State Tennessee State Library and Archives 403 Seventh Avenue North Nashville, Tennessee 37243-0312 RECORDS OF VARIOUS BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS RELATING TO TURNPIKES AND RAILROADS (INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS), 1800-1900 RECORD GROUP 5 Processed by: M. H. E. Archival Technical Services Completed Date: August 29, 1970 Revised: April 22, 1971 MICROFILMED

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE These records outline the development of a system of turnpikes and railroads in Tennessee, beginning in the early 1800 s and continuing into the early 20 th century. A large portion of the records pertain to the application for an issuance of state bonds intended to subsidize internal growth. Reports, financial records, and correspondence reflect the business of the individual companies. Similarly, the work of groups which governed the issuance of state bonds, the Board of Internal Improvements and the Road Commissioners for turnpikes, and the Board or Internal Improvements, Railroad Commissioners, and the Road Commissioners for railroads, is revealed in the form of interrogatories, investigations, and reports Following the destruction of rolling stock during the Civil War, a series of Congressional and judicial battles marked the reconstruction of Tennessee railroads. These records are found in the United States Claims versus the State of Tennessee. Records and correspondence of the commission for Delinquent Railroads indicate the economic plights of both the railroad system and the State of Tennessee during the latter part of the 19 th century. Records for turnpikes and railroads have been compiled and arranged separately. Individual indexes and series descriptions follow. An oversized volume titled Bond Ledger, General was moved to RG 30 due to its contents. Its microfilm may be found with RG 5 s on Microfilm Reel # 4, following the remaining Bond Ledger, General volume.
