General Description The Arrowhead Ranch is a grass ranch located in the distant upper Powder River watershed. The ranch has been managed as a year-round commercial cattle ranch with lick tubs or winter hay provided as supplemental feed during the winter months. Supplemental winter hay is sourced near Casper. Generally, the ranch is short-grass prairie with calving shelter provided on the southern end near the headquarters. Ranching Operations The Arrowhead Ranch is owner-rated as a 300 animal unit (AU) ranch. In its early days, the ranch and surrounding country supported thousands of sheep and, at one time, approximately 100 acres was planted in winter wheat and marketed to The Pillsbury Company for its high protein content. More recently, the field has been planted to crested wheat for hay but re-farming is necessary for any future haying. The ranch was transitioned to year-round cattle grazing years ago. Since the development of the wells and pipeline systems that deliver reliable water throughout the seasons, the ranch is now a solid commercial cow unit. In recent years, mother cows have been maintained on the ranch year-round with supplemental hay provided during the winter months. In many years, the lick tubs were the only supplemental nutrition required with hay being fed as needed during the April- May calving period and at other times as determined by the severity of the winter weather. The winter pipeline and tank system combined with the flowing well and its reservoir provide pasture management capacity even in the winter months. The mother cows typically are range calved in a pasture north and east of the headquarters that is on the winter pipeline. Good shelter for young calves is also found in the hills southwest of the headquarters. Livestock Water: In addition to reservoirs the majority of the ranch is watered by two wells. The first is a flowing well located in the center of the ranch. The water comes to the surface and fills a large reservoir and from there is pumped by windmill to a storage tank thereby making this water system non-electric. This well with its redundant storage systems supplies both a summer and a winter-use pipeline to water tanks scattered through the central part of the ranch. The summer pipeline supplies about 11 stock tanks. The deeper, year-round pipeline system has about 3 stock tanks. FLOWING WELL Permit No. P435.0W Permitted Flow: 25 GPM, Priority Date: 7/27/1960 Enlargement completed 10/15/1990: P83824W A second (electric) well supplies water via buried pipeline to the headquarters, corrals, and 8 stock tanks (for winter use). ELECTRIC WELL Permit No. P138383.0W Permitted Flow: 24 GPM, Priority Date: 8/24/2001 Additional livestock water is provided by several windmills and reservoirs located throughout the ranch. As named on topographic maps, the Lox Reservoir is a large reservoir located near the headquarters. This reservoir and many of the smaller reservoirs on the ranch have been known to hold water throughout the year. Recent dry conditions, however, have limited their use in the summer months. Natural drainages throughout the ranch, which include Cave Gulch, Dean Springs Draw, Okie Draw and other minor drainages, may offer additional water in the spring and early summer depending on snow and rainfall.
