Mission: To land marines and their equipment either by landing craft carried in the well deck and launched through the stern gate, or by helicopters operating from our flight deck. Organizational structure: COMPHIBRON NINE - (immediate senior command) Commanding Officer: Captain Theodore A. Willandt, U.S. Navy, 01 January - 31 December. Home Port: San Diego, California. Enclosure (1)

88 Command History Boric Narrative JUNEAU began 1988 with a holiday leave and upkeep period at U.S. Naval Station, 32nd Street, San Diego, California. The leave and upkeep period was followed by three days underway in the local operations area to certify the JUNEAU for Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicle operations and to certify the Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) system. Following the successful certification, JUNEAU re-entered San Diego to complete preparations for a Western Pacific deployment. JUNEAU deployed as a unit of Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) Alpha on 14 January with a scheduled return date of 14 June. ARG Alpha was commanded by Commander, Amphibious Squadron ONE with USS PELELIEU (LHA 51, USS BRISTOL COUNTY (LST 1198) and FORT FISHER (LSD 40) as the other units of the group. The ARG arrived in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines (RP) on 07 February, with JUNEAU making a brief stop for fuel (BSF) in Guam on 02 February while enroute. From 08 through 14 February the ARG participated in a Seventh Fleet Exercise, Valiant Usher (88-1) off of Subic Bay. After this exercise, JUNEAU entered Subic Bay on 15 February for an upkeep period with SRF Subic Bay. Following this inport period, JUNEAU sailed with ARG Alpha on 03 March enroute to Hong Kong and arrived on 05 March. JUNEAU visited Hong Kong from 05 through 09 March. Crewmembers and Marines had the opportunity to visit sites and shop in and around Hong Kong. Departing Hong Kong on 10 March, JUNEAU sailed with ARG Alpha, enroute to Okinawa, Japan and arrived on 13 March to onload troops for 'Team Spirit 88'. From 14 to 16 March JUNEAU remained at anchor in Buckner Bay, Japan. From 17 March through 04 April JUNEAU was underway participating in 'Team Spirit 88' which took place off the coast of Pohang, Korea. The annual exercise brought forces of the U.S. Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Army together with their South Korean counterparts to demonstrate the United States commitment and capability to defend the Republic of Korea. Upon completion of 'Team Spirit 88', JUNEAU anchored off Pohang, Korea from 05 to 10 April and begun a three day port visit in Pusan, Korea on 11 April. Following this port visit, JUNEAU sailed on 14 April, enroute Buckner Bay, Japan, arriving on 16 April to offload 'Team Spirit 88' personnel and equipment. On 17 April, JUNEAU sailed with ARG Alpha, enroute Subic Bay, RP to begin an upkeep period with SRF Subic Bay, upon arrival 21 April. On 05 May, JUNEAU sailed with the ARG, to participate in 'Valiant Usher' (88-3) in the Korean Straits. 'Valiant Usher' (88-3) was conducted in the Korean Straits from 10 through 16 May. Upon successful completion of 'Valiant Usher' (88-31, JUNEAU sailed with the ARG enroute Hong Kong, arriving on 21 May. JUNEAU spent four days in this liberty port and departed for Subic Bay on 25 May. Arriving in Subic Bay on 27 May, JUNEAU remained inport, conducting an upkeep with SRF Subic Bay until 31 May. Enclosure (3)

JUNEAU left Subic Bay on 1 June, enroute to the Island of Tinian. On 08 June, JUNEAU reached its operational area off Tinian for 'Valiant Usher' (88-4). The amphibious exercise ended on 15 June and the next nine days were spent inport Guam for upkeep and preparations for an Operational Propulsion Plant Examination (OPPE) from 21 through 23 June. The results of OPPE were unsatisfactory and the ship failed to get underway due to problems with 1A and 2A Main Feed Pumps. Additionally, the capability of the fire fighting teams to satisfactorily combat a main propulsion space fire was found to be unsatisfactory. Following OPPE, JUNEAU sailed on 25 June, enroute Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. JUNEAU reached port on 05 July, and spent a day refueling and onloading stores in preparation for the transit to San Diego. While inport Hawaii, JUNEAU embarked TIUERS for one of the highlights of the deployment; the TIGER Cruise. The TIBER Cruise gave male dependenta and relatives the opportunity to ride with their sponsors from Hawaii to San Diego and experience the Navy in action. JUNEAU departed Pearl Harbor on 06 July enroute to San Diego, CA., her final destination of the deployment. JUNEAU anchored off the coast of Camp Pendleton, CA., on 13 July, for the offload of MSSG-11 and Bravo Company BLT1/1 equipment and personnel. JUNEAU arrived in San Diego on 14 July and debarked the TIGERS. JUNEAU'S return to San Diego marked the completion of JUNEAU'S tenth deployment to the Pacific. This was followed by a post deployment leave and upkeep period ending 12 August. From 13 August to 06 September, JUNEAU continued its inport upkeep period in San Diego and was the mothership to four ships being decommissioned. They included the USS BROOKE (FFG-11, USS RAMSEY (FFG-21, USS SCHOFIELD (FFG-31, and USS BRADLEY (FF-1041). JUNEAU supplied berthing, food service, ships service, and administrative support. From 16 through 19 August, JUNEAU underwent its annual boiler inspection and from 31 August to 01 September, the hull was cleaned. A Pre-Training Readiness Inspection for Amphibious Refresher Training was conducted on 06 September with a Fast Cruise on 22 September. JUNEAU completed its inport upkeep period on 25 September. JUNEAU closed out September underway from 26 through 30 September conducting Independent Steaming Exercise (ISE) and Emergency Casualty Control (ECC) drills in the SOCAL OPAREA. JUNEAU returned to San Diego for the weekend of 01 to 02 October. On 03 October, JUNEAU returned to the SOCAL OPAREA to continue ECC drills through 05 October. During this period, JUNEAU conducted a Search and Rescue (SAR) effort for a SH-3 helicopter lost from the USS RANC4ER on 04 October. Prior to returning to San Diego on 06 October, JUNEAU moored at La Playa pier to onload DFM and affload MOGAS. From 07 through 10 October, JUNEAU was inport San Diego at Broadway pier as visit ship for the waterfront festival. JUNEAU was visited by several thousand civilians who were given a tour of the ship and eaw numeroue display8 such as helicopters, Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo (LARC) Craft, and Marine vehicles which were available for viewing. Upon completion of the festival, JUNEAU participated in Amphibious Refresher Training (Amphib REFTRA) in the SOCAL

OPAREA from 11 October through 21 October with a brief upkeep period inport San Diego on 15 to 16 October. JUNEAU was graded in the following areas: Deck Seamanship, Boat Control, Boat Qroup Operations, Well Deck Operations, AAV (Amphibious Assault Vehicles) launch and control, Aviation Operations, LCAC (Landing Craft Air Cushion) Operations, and a Final Amphibious Problem. JUNEAU'S ability to perform in amphibious combat operations was considered to be excellent overall. Upon completion of Amphib REFTRA, JUNEAU returned to San Diego and spent 22 through 31 October in preparation for an Operational Propulsion Plant Re- Examination (OPPRE). OPPRE was conducted from 01 through 03 November, with 02 November spent underway in the SOCAL OPAREA. JUNEAU failed OPPRE due to a failed main space fire drill. Following a few days inport San Diego, JUNEAU got underway on 07 November to offloaded ammunition at Seal Beach, CA on 08 and 09 November in preparation for the upcoming Phased Maintenance Availability (PMA). Returning to port on the evening of 10 November, JUNEAU remained in upkeep at San Diego Naval Station until 21 November when she underwent a dead stick move to Southwest Marine Shipyard. During the period between 21 November to 31 December of 1988, JUNEAU was inport San Diego at Southwest Marine in PMA. The objective of the availability was to upgrade the ship's facilities, capabilities, and engineering plants material condition of readiness.
