The most celebrated myths of ancient Athens, its greatest religious festivals, earliest cults and several decisive events in the city's history are all connected to this sacred precinct. The Acropolis Museum was founded to exhibit all the significant finds from the Sacred Rock and its foothills. It was designed by architect Bernard Tschumi with Michael Photiadis and inaugurated in the summer of 2009. The Museum hosts its collections across three levels, as well as in the archaeological excavation that lies at its foundations.
The Ancient Agora of Classical Athens is the best-known example of an ancient Hellenic agora (market) located to the northwest of the Acropolis and bounded on the south by the hill of the Areopagus and on the west by the hill known as the Agoraios Kolonos, also called Market Hill. The Pnyx (Pnyka) is a hill in central Athens, the capital of Hellas. Beginning as early as 507 BCE, the Athenians gathered on the Pnyx to host their popular assemblies, thus making the hill one of the earliest and most important sites in the creation of democracy. The Areopagus is the composite form of the Hellenic name Areios Pagos, translated "Ares Rock. It is north-west of the Acropolis and in classical times, it functioned as the high Court of Appeal for criminal and civil cases.
