he Romantic Heart of Spain A Journey through History and radition F ollow in the footsteps of Spanish kings, explorers, authors and artists as we explore the provinces of Castile y Léon and Castile La Mancha, staying in the UNESCO cities of Segovia and oledo. You ll find the rolling countryside dotted with magnificent palaces and spectacular gardens, majestic cathedrals and villages dominated by towering castles. his region of Spain was a melting pot of Jewish, Muslim and Christian cultures, still evident today in the architecture, cuisine, fine wines and culture. his is a region of UNESCO orld Heritage sites and we explore two of the most celebrated cities. From the medieval walled cities of Segovia and oledo we stroll along cobbled lanes that have been followed for centuries, enjoy spectacular museums and houses of worship and relish the local cuisine. Royal Palaces, once the summer retreats of Spanish Kings, have gardens of ornate design with trickling fountains, wineries nestle in the Ribera de Duero valley and dramatic gorges of the Duratón Natural Park show the passage of time. oledo s skyline Proposed Daily Itinerary O ur itinerary is expected to follow the daily schedule outlined below but please bear in mind that the order of the days may be amended, or walks substituted, due to weather conditions or changes beyond our control. Day 1 - e fly to Madrid airport and travel by coach to Segovia, located in the province of Castile y León. he journey takes approximately 1 hour. Depending on flight time, we may have an orientation visit of the town before dinner at a local restaurant. Day 2 e ll explore the city in depth today with our local guide. As we discover the cobbled streets of the old town, we ll see the cathedral, Alcazar, with its turreted towers and the Jewish quarter. he old town is perfect for a spot of lunch before we take a walk outside of the city walls, along the Balcon de la Mirada, giving a different perspective of the town as we look out over some of the famous buildings and taking in some wonderful miradors or photostops. Our walk follows the riverbank, along easy paths, which is beautiful in any season. his walk is Segovia s best kept secret! (Douro in Portuguese) that winds its way to Porto in Portugal starts in Spain, north of Segovia. Our next stop is the pretty frontier town of Sepulveda, which we visit before our afternoon walk, takes in magnificent views over the river and gorge. Day 5 Leaving Segovia behind today, our coach transfers us to oledo, south of Madrid, in Castille la Mancha. En route we take time to visit the monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and visit the Valley of the Fallen, a surviving monument of Franco s rule. Arriving into oledo, we ll stop for a coffee at the Parador with spectacular views over the city. here will be time to relax at our hotel before dinner this evening. Day 3 Just 30 miles from Segovia is the lovely town of La Granja S. Ildefonso. he Palacio Real, once the summer residence of the Kings of Spain and modeled on the Palace of Versailles, offers stunning Baroque gardens with cool, shady spots, rippling fountains and peaceful walks. La Granja town has traditional restaurants and cafes to relax in and shops to explore. here will be time later on today to visit any museums or sites you may have missed in Segovia. Day 4 he Duratón River wends its way through the landscape forging deep gorges through limestone rocks and is home to a great number of birds of prey. A gentle walk takes us to the perfectly positioned San Frutos monastery which overlooks the river and allows time to take in this wonderful landscape. he River Duero 01707 386700 Aquedeuct of Segovia

Day 6 oledo is best discovered on foot, which we do this morning with our guide. e ll visit the plazas, see the cathedral and Alcazar and we ll make a stop in the El Greco museum, dedicated to the painter s works. Much of the countryside surrounding oledo inspired El Greco s work. here will be free time for lunch, perhaps you may want to visit the cathedral and later this afternoon, the leader will offer an optional scenic walk across the Alcántara bridge and out of the city. Day 7 Close to oledo, you will find the city of Aranjuez. Important since Roman times, it was popular with the Spanish Royal family escaping the summer heat of Madrid. e ll visit the Royal Palace, gardens and the town itself.
