Welcome to the fi h monthly newsle er for Cowal and Bute. Each month we d like to tell you about new volunteering opportuni es and let you know what is going on in our area. Dunoon Office Update This month, we ve held our first Be Aware, Prepare! event at St Munns Church Hall in Dunoon. We had numerous organisa ons ge ng together to be able to support our local community over the winter months and it was well a ended over 40 older, vulnerable people came through the doors to see what is available to them! Last months Third Sector Network Mee ng was well a ended again! We had over 30 groups engage with us on what ma ers to them in Cowal and Bute. This informa on has been fed up to the Senior Management Team for them to make representa ons on behalf of the Third Sector in Cowal and Bute on a whole range of informa on. We ve also set the dates for next years mee ng but me and venues s ll need to be confirmed. Keep your eyes peeled for this informa on coming shortly, but the dates are as follows; Wednesday 11th January 2017 Wednesday 19 th April 2017 Wednesday 30 th August 2017 Wednesday 15 th November 2017 Don t forget that we have a Self Directed Support worker, who covers Cowal and Bute. Jessica can advise, support and guide you to the best sources of support to suit your needs and lifestyle, whether this be a full me carer, or somebody to just pop in to have a chat when you need company. We have the contacts and unbiased knowhow to help you achieve what you need from your Self Directed Support Plan. For more informa on or to book an appointment, please call 01369 700100. We also have our Guided Self Help workers, who can help you deal with anxiety, selfesteem issues and low mood to name but a few things. If you think you might be experiencing something they can support you with, why not make an appointment with your GP to discuss ge ng a referral. BOCCIA? Have you ever played Boccia with your friends? Would you like to give it a go? Is your group interested in joining a Boccia League? Boccia is sit down bowls a game of precision, accuracy and skill and is suitable for almost everyone from young to old, as well as those less able. Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface now have two boccia kits we can lend out to community groups to try, and we re looking to start a local league. We can even supply a member of staff to ensure things don t get too rowdy Cragroy, we re looking at you! Social Enterprise Toolkit Session Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface are very keen to con nue suppor ng new, emerging and established social enterprises. As a result of conversa ons we ve listened to at Third Sector Network Mee ngs, we re going to run the first of three traffic light sessions red session. This will focus on clarifying the meaning of social enterprise and explore how organisa ons can become more enterprising; increasing awareness of the op ons around social enterprise; and to provide prac cal advice to those interested in developing a social enterprise. The expected outcomes of the session is to offer knowledge of the terminology and prac cal experience of what being a social enterprise means in reality; and to engage par cipants in a conversa on about development pathways to explore a more sustainable future. We re asking organisa ons to let us know if they re a ending we need to make sure we have enough copies of the Social Enterprise Toolkit for people to use. This session will last approximately 3 hours and will comprise PowerPoint and discussion. The session will only run if there is enough interest to warrant it. Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) RVS have a books on wheels service for those over 55, running from Dunoon Library. If you are interested in the service or know someone who might be please contact the library on 01369 708682. They will arrange for a RVS volunteer to bring you a selec on of books on a regular basis. Like all other organisa ons, funding is always a challenge, next to that the biggest challenge is volunteers. Fundraising volunteers are always needed. WRAP Argyll and Bute (Wellness Recovery Ac on Plan) Developed in 2002 this self directed combina on of toolkit and planning will allow you to move forward on your own personal journey of Recovery. Our Course Tutors will guide you through the process of building your own plan to maintain your mental wellbeing. WRAP enables you to iden fy skills you already have and brings it all together to create a plan and toolkit which fits your needs. WRAP Argyll and Bute will be running their course as follows Saturday 5th and Saturday 12th November 2016 9.30am un l 4.30pm at St Muns Church Hall, Dunoon. Arden nny Hall Associa on On Saturday 5th November 2016, Arden nny Hall Associa on are holding a bonfire night event. Star ng at 4.30pm, there will be a Guy making workshop at the Village Hall, followed by a Soup and Hotdog Supper. There will then be a flashlight parade to the beach bonfire (forestry beach car park) please bring your own torch. The cost is 5.00 per person (children under 7 years free). Places MUST be booked in advance for catering purposes call 01369 810 027 to book. Bonfire Beach Party will commence at 6.00pm all are welcome (no charge!) Hot Chocolate, Mulled Wine (nonalcoholic), homebaked goodies and marshmallows for toas ng will be on sale at the beach. Dunoon Men s Shed Dunoon Men s Shed had a visit from Age Scotland s Men s Shed Development Worker, Ian McVicar, to present them with a cheque for 1450.00 to enable them to visit other Mens Sheds and see how they operate, giving them valuable experience in future planning for the project. This brings our funding total to well over 12,000 from various sources. We received 6850.00 from the Big Lo ery s Awards for All program; this led to us receiving a le er from our local MP, Brendan O Hara, who says that You could argue that for too long, the health and wellbeing of men has been overlooked and it is a fantas c service which I m sure will go from strength to strength here in Scotland. Brendan s definitely on our invite list for our official opening day! We ve also had fabulous engagement on our facebook page with over 1000 people seeing our man gli er post did it make you laugh? Cragroy Tenants Associa on Last month, Cragroy Tenants Associa on held their annual MacMillan Coffee Morning. A lot of hard work and dedica on by vast swathes of volunteers went in to ensuring that the kitchens were well stocked with delicious homebakes, dozens of raffle prizes and hampers galore! Responsible for organising this extraordinary feat of cakey goodness is Margaret Campbell who folded all of the raffle ckets by hand over the weekend before the event! She s also on hand with Hazel McCallum, ACHAs Community Support Assistant, to direct all the volunteers on the day and ensure everything runs smoothly. This year, Cragroy presented a cheque to two cancer chari es MacMillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie amoun ng to 1,166.00! Fabulous work here s to next year! HomeStart MAJIK Our Bute Buggy Buds has been very successful and we look forward to mee ng more families every week at the Discovery Centre Tuesdays at 10.30am. Our AGM was very well a ended and a great talk by Peter Cartwright about the effects of childhood trauma in adulthood. We enjoyed mee ng Annie from Home Start Scotland. We are also looking forward to welcoming a new Trustee to the board. Child Protec on refresher sessions are being held for all volunteers. Contact Sharon on 07435 595 054. Arden nny Community Trust We held our annual fundraising event, The Harvest Fair. There was live music, a tea tent, cra s for kids, face pain ng, coconut shy, garden produce and preserves made from so fruits grown in the garden for sale and local stalls along with a raffle and bo le (alcoholic only) stall. It was a very successful day and we made in excess of 1100 part of which will be spent on a diesel generator. Although the garden is now officially closed for the season we will open the garden to groups on request. Simon, the volunteer coordinator, is in the garden on Mondays, when we have a pupil from the Grammar on work experience and Thursdays when we have people from the HELP Project. Na onal Park volunteers come to the garden on the second and last Saturdays of the month. On these days the gate should be open and visitors are welcome to come in and enjoy the space or join the workers and volunteers. Our two main challenges are ge restora on of the wall. ng volunteers out to Arden nny and obtaining a grant to start the Simon our volunteer coordinator/gardener is in the garden on a Monday and Thursday with volunteers and young men from the HELP project. The second and last Saturdays of the month Na onal Park volunteers come out to the garden 11a.m 3p.m. There is home baking and refreshments so come along for a chat and join in. For more informa on contact Simon or follow on Facebook Glenfinart Walled Garden Cowal Rugby Club Cowal Rugby Football Club have gone from strength to strength in this, its for eth year, securing a grant from Cowal Health and Wellbeing Network to aid them in developing a comprehensive youth involvement strategy, focusing primarily on those between the ages of 12 and 25. As a result, they ve picked up several new senior players, as well as had a posi ve spike in junior members. They held their first open day up at Dunoon Stadium this year this was a ended by the likes of HomeStart MAJIK, Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface, Dunoon Community Radio, CowalFest Argyll, Living It Up, Crossroads Young Carers and Dunoon Observer, to name but a few. Over the course of a few wet hours, over 150 people came up to the stadium to see what we were about as a club a fantas c day was had by all. The senior team are currently si ng 5th in BT West Division 4; their next home game is 5th November, against Lanark Kick Off is 2pm and everyone is more than welcome!
