SHOPPING IN SHOPPING SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE HIGH STREET High Street offers a range of independent shops including a jewellers, shoe shop, pet shop, delicatessen, wool shop and book shop which also sells art material, stationery, home accessories and a small selection of jewellery. You can also find a small number of well-known high street names. Every Monday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. there is the Monday Market with over 50 stalls selling a variety of produce, which is not to be missed. SUPERMARKETS Within you can find big-name supermarkets such as Waitrose, Co-Op and M&S Food. Both Sainsbury s and Lidl are found on the outskirts of town. EATING AND DRINKING There are many eating and drinking establishments to choose from in. There is everything from smart hotels and restaurants - e.g. the Captains Club Hotel, The RAIL Kings Arms and the Boat House Restaurant to chains such as Prezzo, Pizza Express, Café Nero and Costa Coffee. There are also many independent pubs, tea rooms and cafés. Be sure to checkout the Fleur-de-Lis TeaROAD Rooms next to the Regent Centre off the High Street. The tea room serves everything from Poached Eggs to Baked Ciabatta. Their famous Afternoon Tea is only 11.95 and is a definite must try. U3A There is an active and thriving U3A (University of the Third Age) organisation in, where members with similar interests meet up during the day in small groups. There are over 100 special interest groups to choose from including art, zoology, photography and pretty much everything else in-between. The annual membership fee is 38 per person. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN S INSTITUTES The St Catherine s Hill WI offers a full programme of monthly meetings at 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. In addition, the Knit and Natter Group and Book Club meet monthly. WI Central meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. FLEUR-DE-LIS TEA ROOMS FLEUR-DE-LIS TEA ROOMS INTERESTS AND RECREATIONS PROBUS CLUB Probus meet on the first Tuesday of the month at The East Close Hotel, Lyndhurst Road, Hinton,, BH23 7EF. A very friendly welcome awaits all retired and semi-retired professionals and business people. Meetings start at approximately 10:15 a.m. for coffee followed by a short business meeting at 10:45 a.m. and a speaker at 11:00 a.m. A range of speakers are lined up for the monthly meetings covering all sorts of local or historic and general issues sometimes humorous, sometimes sad, but always entertaining and interesting. The meeting then retires for drinks at midday or just after, with lunch served at 12:30 p.m.
PLACES OF INTEREST LEISURE ACTIVITIES MUST VISIT SPOTS LEISURE & PLEASURE HIGHCLIFFE CASTLE EAST DORSET INDOOR BOWLS QUAY Quay is a must see spot for any trip to. The beautiful riverside boasts an abundance of open space as well as stunning views of the Priory Church. Attractions include: the Riverside Promenade and Pathways, bandstand, ferry trips, a restored Anglo-Saxon watermill and charming cafés. PRIORY The Priory dates back to Norman times and is open every day of the week. It welcomes a large number of visitors from around the world. As well as holding religious services, regular free organ concerts are held when lunches and light refreshments are available. A music and art festival will be held here between the 12th and 18th June 2016. HIGHCLIFFE CASTLE Highcliffe Castle was built between 1831 and 1835 by Lord Stuart de Rothesay. The magnificent building remained a family home until the 1950s. Unfortunately two fires rendered the building derelict but following a huge renovation and conservation programme the exterior of the building, the State Dining Room, butler s pantry and East Tower can now be enjoyed by members of the public. HENGISTBURY HEAD Hengistbury Head is a headland which juts into the English Channel. It is a coastal nature reserve with wild flowers and signs of an ancient settlement. There is an excellent visitor and exhibition centre where events are held, including bird song courses, guided walks and craft workshops. A land train runs from a stop adjacent to the café all the way to Mudeford Sandbank. EAST DORSET INDOOR BOWLS East Dorset Indoor Bowls Club is run by bowlers for bowlers and boasts a six-rink playing area with a licensed bar in the adjacent lounge. There is also a lounge on the first floor, accessible by lift or stairs, with a bar and viewing area. Coaching is available for all ages and abilities. HEALTH WALKS Health Walks are held every week on Tuesdays from Saxon Square between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. There is no need to book just turn up! Walking is at a leisurely pace with occasional breaks and provides the perfect opportunity to get out and about and meet new people in a refreshing, outdoor setting. All leaders are trained volunteers and will guide you around while you chat with your friends. TWO RIVERSMEET GOLF PARK Two Riversmeet Golf Park is a new course which was opened in April 2015. You can choose between 9 or 18 holes set in beautiful surroundings with views of Harbour, the Priory and Hengistbury Head. There is also a putting green, chipping green and practice range bays. For the over 60s memberships costs 12 per month and pay and play costs 6.90 for 18 holes and 4 for 9 holes (prices as of April 2016). THE REGENT CENTRE The Regent Centre is run by volunteers and hosts a full programme of film, theatre and concert events. The foyer is home to a very popular café where, as of April 2016, a regular cup of tea costs a very reasonable 1.20 and a regular coffee 1.30.
FOOD & WINE FESTIVAL This year The Food & Wine Festival was held on the 7th & 8th May. This annual event draws huge crowds of people and showcases 100s of stalls in both the High Street and on the Quay. Keep an eye out for it next year. ROAD The M3 and M27 motorways are approximately 20-30 minutes travelling distance via the A31 or A35 providing fast access to London and other major cities. The A35 runs from Devon through to Southampton via Poole, Bournemouth and the New Forest. AIR Bournemouth International Airport is under 15 minutes away with regular flights to Spain, The Greek Islands, The Canary Islands, Italy, Switzerland and Portugal. BOAT Southampton Port is only 45 minutes away and is renowned for being the cruise capital of the UK. PARKING RAILWAY STATION There are plenty of parking options in and around. The closest to the High Street are on Bank Close with a capacity of 135 spaces and Saxon Square Car Park with a capacity of up to 257 spaces.
