THE ABTO GAZETTE President s Message November Gazette We had a good meeting, good food, and a good crowd on October 20th at the home of Ken and Kris Hawkins. They have moved tons of rock and dirt to behind a block retaining wall to elevate the track layout. A rock feature with the train crossing over a waterfall will be the focus for this layout. I can t wait to see it finished next year. The Tucson Round-A-Bout was a huge success. There were 30 club members who carpooled to Tucson, stopping first at Cholla Patch RR, belonging to John Carmichael and Philip Pappas. We enjoyed bagels, cream cheese, doughnuts, juice, and coffee as we admired the excellent craftsmanship and artistic creativity of John s handiwork on this layout. A special treat was seeing some of his world fa mous sundials created in class and stone. Besides a great variety of different designs in all the layouts, other highlights of the tour included a delicious lunch at the home of Glenn and Janet Mitchell, an impressive model car and airplane collection, a live steam demonstration, and many pieces of rust junk art. The day was slow paced and allowed lots of time for visiting and connecting with our own club members as well as making new friends in the Tucson club. A big thanks to Gary Martin and the TGRS members for hosting us so well. Our meeting this month on the 15th, will be a late afternoon/early evening meeting. It starts at 3:00 and lasts until dusk so we can see Jim and JoAnne Gardners layout lit up. Jim will also demonstrate the art of painting a train car. Our Christmas banquet promises to be a fun evening of good food and fellowship at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Phoenix on December 7th at 5:30. Please make your reservation by sending a check ($16 per person - all inclusive) to Mike Temenski or bringing it to the November meeting. The deadline for reservations is November 30th.
