ITINERARY DAY 1: LIMA Upon your arrival in Lima you will be welcomed at the airport and escorted to your hotel. DAY 2: LIMA - AREQUIPA Your morning sightseeing tour of Lima explores its historic districts and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Colonial architecture characterizes the capital with the wonderfully preserved cathedral containing the remains of the Spanish conqueror Pizarro. Next at Santo Domingo Monastery there are some historic relics and a bell tower which offers panoramic views of the city. According to your interest, the tour can end with a visit to the Larco Herrera museum that houses the best collection of pre-columbian art in the country. Private transfer to the airport at the end of the excursion for your flight to Arequipa. (B) DAY 3: AREQUIPA Today you will have a half day city tour of Arequipa. Because some of the old buildings are made of white volcanic material (sillar) Arequipa is also known as the 'white city'. You will visit the extraordinary Santa Catalina Convent. This cloister, built in the 16th century, is a huge construction which once served as a town within itself housing 450 nuns. Traditionally, the oldest daughters of Arequipa's aristocratic families entered the convent in their early teens and spent their lives there, cloistered away. The convent complex has been beautifully refurbished, bringing the past vividly alive once more. After this you will head to the Yanahuara lookout point for a magnificent view of the Misti Volcano and the city. (B) DAY 4: AREQUIPA - COLCA CANYON Today you will depart Arequipa early and head towards the Colca Canyon. The road climbs the slopes of Chachani Volcano until you reach highland plains inhabited by herds of vicuna. After a brief stop for coca tea to help you adjust to the altitude, continue through bird spotting sites and incredible lookout points for scenic shots. At El Mirador de los Andes, there is a stunning view of a snowcapped mountain range featuring several volcanoes. Your journey ends at the picturesque town of Chivay where you can make another stop to visit the local market or enjoy a 2 hour hike in Corporaque or the tombs / hanging bridge of Sifón. (B)
DAY 5: COLCA CANYON This morning you will head to an observation point at one of the deepest parts of the canyon; the perfect place to look down at the rock formations and look up to spot the legendary condor. The bird with the largest wingspan in the world can be seen rising and circling above the canyon, silhouetted against the magnificent backdrop of Andean scenery. Later a 90-minute hike from Cruz del Condor lookout point to Cruz de Cura and also a 2 hour hike at Canabaconde which features some more lookout points. (B) DAY 6: COLCA CANYON - LAKE TITICACA Your last day in the Colca Valley begins with a trip to its oldest church which has an impressive 16th century façade. There is a final brief hiking opportunity to the archeological site of San Antonio where you can enjoy a terrific all-round view of the valley's terraces. Then it's time to say goodbye to the Colca Canyon as you continue your trip over the Antiplano, journeying amongst volcanoes, lakes, cacti and herds of alpaca. Transfer to your hotel in Puno on the shore of the lake. (B) DAY 7: LAKE TITICACA Today you will take a boat trip to the private island of Suasi and arrive at a beautiful haven. En route there is a stop at one of the famous floating islands which are home to the Uros people. This civilization began hundreds of years ago when the reed which grows abundantly in the lake was interwoven to form straw islands. Next disembark on the less touristy southern side of the island of Taquile, where the indigenous population has conserved ancient customs in their communitarian lifestyle. The vistas are spectacular from this area as the deep red soil contrasts with the glistening blue lake. In the evening you will reach the only hotel on Suasi Island and witness the glorious sunset from this unique vantage point. (B,L,D) DAY 8: LAKE TITICACA This morning enjoy some time at leisure to explore the island or make use of the hotel's fantastic spa. DAY 9: LAKE TITICACA - CUZCO A ten-hour bus trip takes you through picturesque Andean landscapes dotted by small villages and herds of llamas and vicunas. Your final destination is Cusco, however you make three important stops along your way: the first one is at La Raya Pass (4335 m) to enjoy a panoramic view of the snow-capped Andes. Lunch will be served in a typical restaurant in Sicuani. Then your tour continues to visit the Viracocha Temple. This was the only Inca temple featuring cylindrical stone columns covered by fine clay layers. The last stop is in Andahuaylillas known by its baroque church dating from the 17th century. Upon arrival in Cuzco, reception and transfer to your hotel. (B,L) DAY 10: CUZCO - MACHU PICCHU - CUZCO A morning transfer from Cuzco takes you to Ollantaytambo station in the Sacred Valley where you board the train to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival a small coach takes you up the steep roads to the entrance of the citadel, then your guide will take you on a fascinating private tour of the ruins. With its breathtaking location and astounding construction, it is clear why this Inca site is so highly regarded. Return train to the Sacred Valley and transfer back to your hotel in Cuzco in the evening. (B) DAY 11: CUZCO - SACRED VALLEY - CUZCO Today you will visit the bustling Pisac market in the Sacred Valley. Originally a place where people from remote communities used to barter their products, Pisac has evolved to become one of South America's most famous souvenir markets. There is the opportunity to visit the Inca ruins near Cuzco en route, including a hilltop fortress and sacred temple. (B) DAY 12: CUZCO - LIMA After breakfast you will embark on a half day tour exploring the many sights in this fine colonial city. Amongst the iconic architecture you will come across the famous cathedral, Temple of the Sun and the remains of Inca Roca's palace. Treading the cobblestone alleys is the perfect way to soak in Cuzco's artistic atmosphere and conclude your cultural voyage.
