Serengeti Great Migration The Annual Wildebeest-and-Zebra Migration in the Serengeti is the biggest animal spectacle the world over. It is one of the most unique events of the year taking place in the Serengeti normally between the months of November and July the following year. Some have termed this event as one of the greatest wonders of the world. Enjoy 3 full day game drive/s around the Serengeti National Park depending on Migration movement The Migration usually roams around in the area; where Some eight million hooves pounding the open grasslands, a blur of brown and black and white stripes rushing past; bleating, snorting, dust kicking up into the air; Huge heard of Wildebeest and Zabras are likely to be resident with new-born calves. Accompanying the wildebeest are large numbers of gazelles and predators. Meals and overnight is served at the Lodge/Camp around the area. This annual migration is shown on the map on the left side, showing month-by-month movement Source: Tanapa 13

Ngorongoro Crater The world s largest inactive and unfilled volcano is well renowned for the host of flora and fauna that inhabit the crater. Approximately 25,000 large animals populate the crater, which boasts to have one of the densest populations of lions in the world. Visitors are almost guaranteed to spot wildebeest, zebra, elands and gazelles, whereas the luckier ones may spot cheetah or the rare leopard. The scenic drives down the crater, coupled with the excitement of the biodiversity makes Ngorongoro Crater one of the most sought after holiday destinations in the world. Size: 8228 km² / 3176 mi² Altitude: 1009-3645 m / 3310-11959 ft Wildlife: Wildebeest, Black Rhino, Elephants, Cheetah Best time to visit: Throughout the year Activities: Game drives, Nature walking and trekking, excursions to Olduvai Gorge and visiting the Masai and other tribes. 14

Tarangire As the sixth largest national park in Tanzania, Tarangire should not be overlooked as one of the key attractions for safari. It is well known for its incredibly diverse vegetation not found anywhere else in the northern circuit safari. The Tarangire River, which runs through the park, is the primary source of water for the game during dry seasons. Tarangire has a vegetation known to be more dense than the Serengeti and in the dry season, between June and October, large herds of animals are attracted to the Tarangire River. At this time, the elephant numbers are spectacular. Size: 2850 km² / 1096 mi² Altitude: 982-1646 m / 3222-5400 ft Wildlife: Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, Hippo, Wildebeest Best time to visit: June to October (Animals congregate around the Tarangire River) Activities: Game drives, Nature walking, Night safari 15

Lake Manyara One of the smaller parks in Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is located at base of the Rift Valley escarpment. Visitors to Lake Manyara are offered a change of scenery from the more savannah dominated parks. Shades of pink, white and blue can be seen as flocks of flamingos and pelicans frolic upon the waters of the lake. The park is home to a large diversity of over 400 species of birds. Within the park it is rare to see big cats such as leopards or lions, but elephants and giraffes, as well as impala, gazelle and dik-dik are more common to the area. Size: 330km2 / 130 mi2 Altitude: 953-1445 m / 3127-4741 ft Wildlife: Elephants, Giraffes, Hippo Best time to visit: Throughout the year Activities: Game drives, Night safari, Nature walking and hiking, Culture tours, Mountain biking. 16

Arusha Though very accessible, Arusha NP isn t on many safari itineraries. This is mainly because it doesn t offer a chance of seeing the Big Five. The park is at the base of Mount Meru, which is good for climbing. It has a range of habitats including forest - home to black-and-white colobus monkeys - and is excellent for birding. Size: 552 km² / 212 mi² Altitude: 1340-1839 m / 4396-6033 ft Wildlife: black-and-white colobus monkeys, giraffe, waterbucks Best time to visit: Throughout the year Activities: Game drives, Walking safari, Canoeing safari, Mountain climbing. 17

Mount Kilimanjaro The tallest free-standing mountain in the world, rises to a breath-taking view of Tanzania. Mount Kilimanjaro offers the adventurous travellers multiple routes to scale the tallest peak in Africa, ranging from the casual Marangu route to the more difficult, but scenic Mchame route. Visitors to the area can also explore the Kilimanjaro National Park where a variety of animals can be found in their natural habitat. There are seven official trekking routes by which to ascend and descend Mount Kilimanjaro: Lemosho, Machame, Marangu, Mweka, Rongai, Shira, and Umbwe. Of all the routes, Machame is considered the most scenic, albeit steeper, route. It can be done in six or seven days. The Rongai is the easiest and least scenic of all camping routes. The Marangu is also relatively easy, but this route tends to be very busy, the ascent and descent routes are the same, and accommodation is in shared huts with all other climbers. 18

Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Routes 19

Southern Circuit

Ruaha The Ruaha National Park is famous for its large population of elephants, with about 10,000 roaming the park. It is also frequented by birdwatchers, with 436 species having been identified of an estimated total of 475. Guided walks are available to fully appreciate the sights and sounds of the wild. This national park does not often get crowded and boast a more exclusive safari in one of the best places in East Africa to encounter wild dogs and unusual antelope species like greater kudu, roan and sable. Ruaha is superb for spotting big game including many prides of lions. Size: 10300 km² / 3980 mi² Altitude: 720-1886 m / 2362-6188 ft Wildlife: Elephant, Wild Dogs, Giraffe, Lion Best time to visit: June - October Activities: Game drives, Walking safari. 22

Selous Dubbed with World Heritage Site status, Selous is one of Africa s largest parks and fringed by the Rufiji River. Wildlife is rife along the plains and lodges are located amidst well situated positions. If visitors opt to stay at a lodge inside the game reserve, it is not uncommon to hear the distinguishable footsteps of hippos and other nocturnal wildlife as they roam the grounds at night. Unlike the national parks, this conservation area allows walking (the ideal way to observe the 2,000 indigenous plant species), boating safaris and many of the camps offer overnight fly camping excursions. Lions are easily found at the lake shores, though one of the main attractions of the park is its large population of wild dogs. Size: 47665 km² / 18403 mi² Altitude: 36-1461 m / 118-4793 ft Wildlife: Wild Dogs, Girraffe, Hippo, Crocodile, Lion Best time to visit: June - October Activities: Game drives, Walking safari, Boat safari. 23

Mikumi The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the popular centerpiece of Mikumi, is often compared to the more famous Serengeti Plains. The park is very accessible by surfaced road from Dar es Salaam. Size: 3220 km² / 1250 mi² Altitude: 199-1259 m / 653-4131 ft Wildlife: zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, impala, lions, spotted hyena Best time to visit: June to October Activities: Game drives, Walking safari. Udzungwa Mountains The largest and most biodiverse of a chain of a dozen large forestswathed mountains that rise majestically from the flat coastal scrub of eastern Tanzania. An excellent network of forest trails includes the popular half-day ramble to Sanje Waterfall, which plunges 170 metres (550 feet) through a misty spray into the forested valley below. Size: 1,990 km² / 770 mi² Altitude: 250-2,576 m Wildlife: Green-headed monkey, butterflies, birds Best time to visit: Possible year round although slippery in the rains Activities: Walking and trekking. 24

Katavi Katavi is pure wilderness. This classic dry-season park is completely off the beaten-track, but teeming with wildlife. Tanzania third largest national park, it lies in the remote southwest of the country, with in a truncated arm of the Rift Valley that terminates in the shallow, brooding expanse of Lake Rukwa. Park is the heart of one of the biggest and richest wildlife areas in Tanzania, the Katavi-Rukwa ecosystem. It encompasses the second largest wildlife population of Tanzania. Size: 4471 km² / 1727 mi² Altitude: 816-1634 m / 2677-5361 ft Wildlife: Lions, buffalo herds, hippos Best time to visit: August to October Activities: Game drives, Walking safari. Saadani Saadani is where the beach meets the bush. It is the only park in East Africa with an Indian Ocean beachfront and the one place where those idle hours of sunbathing might be interrupted by an elephant strolling past, or animals coming to drink at the nearby waterhole. Also a sight to behold are the Swahili fishermen casting their nets at sunrise. Size: 1100 km² / 424 mi² Altitude: 3-75 m / 10-246 ft Wildlife: giraffe, buffalo, warthog, common waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest Best time to visit: January - February/ June - August Activities: Game drives, Walking safari, Visit Green turtle Breeding site, Night game drive. 25

Zanzibar Island

Stone Town Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors - there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork. You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating abyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways. Places to visit: The Old Dispensary, The market, Livingstone s House, The Peace Memorial Museum, The Palace Museum, The House of Wonders 28

Zanzibar Coast The coasts in Zanzibar are a paradise, interspersed with picturesque fishing villages, where the people live a simple way of life, unchanged over the years. There are more than 25 fantastic beaches in Zanzibar, and some are so peaceful and remote that the only noise breaking the silence is likely to be the ocean. At the northern tip of the island is Nungwi, approached by a road lined by banana palms, mangroves and coconut trees. This is the dhow building capital of Zanzibar island, so it is a good place to see traditional craftsmen at work. On the west coast of Zanzibar, Mangapwani beach is worth a visit, and to the east are the beaches of Matemwe, Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa, Uroa, Bwejuu and Jambiani, all with stretches of beautiful white sands. Zanzibar also boasts several small offshore island, Prison (or Changu) island is the most popular with a large population of ancient Aldabra tortoises. 29

Pemba Pemba is a very beautiful tropical landmass, covering 988 square kilometres and lying 60km off the Indian Ocean Coast of Tanzania, 40km to the north of Zanzibar Island and 150km north of Dar es Salaam. Island has been overshadowed by the popularity of its sister island of Unguja. The popularity of Pemba stems mainly from the clove industry, More than 70% of the Zanzibar s harvest of cloves is produced in the island of Pemba. Perhaps the most alluring aspect of the island is its stunning marine environment. Much of the coastline plunges steeply into the deep blue Indian Ocean, especially on the eastern side, whilst on the western side broad coral lagoons are dotted with a network of beautiful small islands. Mucking around in boats in these waters and having picnics on these remote tropical islands is such a great experience, this is almost certainly our favourite area of the East African coast. The diving around Pemba Island is as good as it gets. Mafia Mafia Island lying only 160 km south, remains virtually unknown. Previously poor communications with the mainland and being much lesser known than Zanzibar have kept Mafia original, although a steady trickle of visitors are unanimous in singing its praise. Mafia is one of the safest places in the Indian Ocean and there are no hustlers to spoil a holiday. Natural vegetation on Mafia ranges from tidal mangrove thickets and scrubby coastal moorlands to palm-wooden grassland and lowland rainforest. 30 Mafia Island and its reefs are renowned as an excellent, world-class diving destination. Scientists have confirmed that has some of the richest reefs in the world, with an unparalleled variety of hard and soft corals and diversity of tropical fish. Mafia Archipelago hosts antiquities dating back to the Eleventh Century, including ruins at Kisimani Mafia, Kanga, Kua on Juani Island and Chole Island.

Lake Momella Canoeing Glide across the smooth surface of this small Crater Lake and view birdlife seldom seen. Surrounded by forested crater walls, this is a very quiet and leisurely canoeing experience. 35

Visit Hadzabe Tribe - Cultural experience The Hadza or Bushmen people are an ethnic group living in central Tanzania around Lake Eyasi in the central Rift Valley and in the neighboring Serengeti Plateau. The Bushmen people raise no livestock, grow no food, and live without calendars or rules. They are living a hunter-gatherer existence that is little changed from 10,000 years ago. Today they are the last functioning hunter-gatherers in Africa. The Hadza are a unique culture not closely related to any other people. Traditionally they were considered an East African branch of the Khoisan peoples, primarily because their language consists of a curious series of clicks. Modern genetic research suggests that they may be more closely related to the Pygmies. 36

Lake Natron Situated at the base of Africa s only active volcano Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God), Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. The lake is home to millions of tiny crustaceans, attracting literally thousands of lesser flamingo s and it is therefore one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth. Activities in the Lake Natron area focus mainly on walks. You can walk out across the baked mud to the shores of the great soda lake itself, in which algae and zooplankton thrive which in turn attract the flamingos that line the lake s shore. Rubondo Island Rubondo Island is the perfect destination for the adventurous and active. Spend your time exploring the pristine forest and water around the island. The proximity offered by to the unique ecosystem of Rubondo Island is an experience you would not want to miss. Highly trained guides are adept to the forest walks and guided game excursions, with an astonishing array of birdlife waiting to be discovered. Rubondo Island the excursions can be diversified with memorable canoe excursions on Lake Victoria, making for a great way to discover and appreciate the island. The lake itself is the source of protein and income to local people, main activities being fishing and tourism. Lake Tanganyika Lake Tanganyika is one of the Great Rift Valley Lakes found on the western border of Tanzania, in East Africa. The Lake boasts visibilities of up to 20m with massive boulders, spectacular drop offs and a shell covered bottom. It is thought to date back 9 to 20 million years and is one of the richest aqueous environments in the world, supporting at least 280 varieties of fish. Because of their unique feeding techniques, Tanganyika cichlids prefer different habitats. This means that by going only a few hundred meters, you are able to view totally different species, making your diving and snorkelling trips very exciting. 37
