TREEN TOPICS AUGUST 2012 www.shoalhavenwoodcraft.com.au Shoalhaven Woodcraft Society Inc. Meetings: 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm Nowra Technology High School. Moss St. Nowra Secretary: Peter Jackson P. O. Box 2163 Bomaderry 2541

TREEN TOPICS AUGUST 2012 August Meeting - Ladies Night Our usual meeting night this month is the annual dinner with the ladies so don t turn up at the high school expecting to see a meeting happen. For those attending the dinner, you need to be there about 6.00PM with dinner commencing at 6.30PM. Also remember that the venue has changed with it being held this year at A Wing and a Pear located at 59 Junction Street Nowra. An inducement for those who have not yet decided whether or not to go is that there is a choice of 3 entrees, 3 mains and 2 sweets and all for the price of $33 per head. The highlight of the night will be the awarding of the annual Len Arthur Award. Shirley Arthur and possibly her sons will be there to make the presentation in memory of Len who was a mainstay of the club. Bob Turnbull will be running a slide show to complete the entertainment. Creative Moments This year Creative Moments is starting two weeks before the traditional date of late September so we lose the advantage of having the September meeting just prior to the exhibition beginning. This is the last Treen Topics before it begins so please take note of the following information. You will have already received a letter from John Knowles together with entry form, tags and raffle book. If this is not the case and you have items to show, phone John on 4423 3944. It is important that you have all of the correct documents. The Exhibition form for entries must be in Jim Davey s hands by 5.00PM on Thursday 6 th September. If you miss this deadline you will not be able to exhibit!!

Entries are to be delivered to the Art Gallery between 9.00AM and 11.00AM on Thursday 13 th September. Once you have completed the entry procedure with Gordon and Jim you are requested to depart the premises and leave the gallery people to arrange things. A blog site with information on the exhibition can be accessed via this link http://creativemoments2012.blogspot.com.au/ Volunteers are needed to man the table during the exhibition which will run for about fifteen days. Each day is broken into two shifts of about three hours so we need thirty volunteers. In previous years some members have had to do two and more shifts because some have not pulled their weight. With the majority of members being retired, surely we can find three hours out of three weeks to help the club. The sheet will be doing the rounds at the coming Ladies Night so put your name down. Alternately, phone John and arrange a shift over the phone. Creative Moments is an expensive event to run and the sale of the raffle tickets goes a long way towards covering this cost. Please do your bit to help by selling your book of tickets and returning it to the gallery by Tuesday 2 nd October. If you can sell more than one book then that would be appreciated. Supper Convenor Terry Hoffman has answered the call to prepare supper at our monthly meetings at the high school. This is on top of his catering at the monthly workshops at the shed. Thanks very much Terry.

Bunnings Display The club has been asked to provide a display at Bunnings on 25 th August from 10.00AM to 3.00PM. Displays of wood turning and other woodwork have attracted a good deal of interest on previous occasions and have resulted in new members joining the club in some cases. If you would like to take part please contact Greg on 4447 8384. Volunteers for Bunnings Barbeque There are two of these coming up. The first is on Saturday 8 th September and the second on Saturday 6 th October. These money raisers are a very helpful source of funds for the club and allow us to buy equipment and to plan for quite ambitious projects which would otherwise be way beyond our means. Greg will have a sheet going around at the Ladies Night for the September one and you can also phone him on 4447 8384 to make yourself available.

Wood Turning Workshop in July A basic woodturning day was held on Saturday 21st July at the mens shed at Terrara. Approximately seven brave souls attended the workshop under the training of our club member Charlie Hillen. Charlie is a professional wood turner who originally trained as an apprentice through the TAFE system. Today Charlie is employed full time as a turner in the Wollongong area and is involved in many facets of this art. The day commenced with a general talk on safety issues and the dos and don ts of turning, and then moved on to the many areas including stance and the holding and use of the various chisels and gouges. Again safety was paramount in all these areas. For the basic turning principles Charlie demonstrated on his Leady lathe the techniques of reducing stock and then setting or marking out for the turning of beads and coves. Charlie impressed us all with his ability to quickly and simply carry out what appeared to be a simple task..it was now up to us to use the clubs lathes and repeat the many beads that Charlie demonstrated. Suitably dressed with our safety shields and other equipment we commenced practicing on a relatively soft pine for the beads..using the skew chisel it wasn t long before the familiar sounds of dig-ins and the many damaged beads that we had previously completed no one was unscathed. It was good to take breaks for morning tea etc. Following the BBQ lunch prepared by our catering officer Terry Hoffman we then moved onto turning coves which is like an internal version of the bead. The group was far more proficient at turning the coves using gouges. As a final exercise Charlie set the task of turning a foot massager that consisted of approximately 12 beads and some rollers at each end. The timber was Kalantis and being soft turned relatively easily.

Overall the training day was excellent and we all came away with the knowledge that we had at least achieved a great deal of satisfaction. The success of the day was due to Charlie being very free in providing information about turning, the use of tools and in addition providing tips on sharpening and honing of these specialist tools. (Thanks to John Knowles for this article) Forthcoming Program Wednesday 15 th August Ladies Night Video Display by Bob Turnbull Saturday 18 th August Workshop Turning with Charlie Hillen Saturday 25 th August Display at Bunnings Weekend 31/8 to 2/9 Canberra Working with Wood Show Wednesday 5 th September Committee Meeting Saturday 8 th September Bunnings Barbeque Friday 14 th September Creative Moments Begins Wednesday 19 th September General Meeting Exotic Lath Tools with Peter Jackson
