OVERVIEW On this very special adventure, we discover the extraordinary beauty and tragic history of North Borneo. Not only will we ride the rails in one of the world s most exotic locations, experience the region s abundant natural wonders and wildlife, and explore fascinating cities and town, but we ll also have the opportunity to attend the special Anzac Day dawn ceremony in Sandakan that remembers the Australian and British soldiers who tragically perished in the Death Marches of 1945, towards the end of the Second World War. We begin our journey in the modern and bustling capital of Kuala Lumpur, before flying to Sandakan in Borneo for the Anzac Day dawn service. We ll then continue our journey with a visit to the region s important wildlife rehabilitation and conservation centres, where we ll get the opportunity to meet the wild man of Borneo the orangutan. We ll visit the historic island of Labuan and discover unique wildlife at the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort before continuing to the stunning UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kinabalu National Park. The park houses the highest mountain in South-East Asia, Mount Kinabalu, and boasts rare and untouched flora and fauna. We ll then have an extended stay in Borneo s capital, Kota Kinabalu. It s here that we join the North Borneo Railway, a rare example of a remote colonial line that has been reinvigorated. This railway is famous for transporting tourists and locals alike, and showcasing untouched landscapes and intriguing little villages. Join us on this special journey through a region that has vast unspoiled natural beauty, vibrant modern cities and towns, friendly people, and a wealth of rich stories, including a poignant legacy for remembrance and reflection. In addition to her own corporate businesses, Bernadette owned and operated a popular and successful acting school in Sydney, born out of a passion to combine her acting experience and psychology training to provide a space for kids to express themselves and learn great life skills. She is a popular conference presenter and a sought-after business coach and facilitator, having developed numerous workshops focused on sales, performance management, team excellence and communication. She is becoming an emerging voice for the over-50s in the workplace, and blogs on all things from travel to women s rights. Passionate about the arts, culture and how others live, Bernadette s travel experiences are many and varied, from the wilds of the Kimberly to the port caves of Portugal, the treasures of Angkor Wat to the cultural meccas of Europe, and the souks of Morocco and the bright lights of Broadway. Bernadette has navigated groups of kids through Eisteddfod competitions, teens through personal development programs and adults across countries. She s been a big part of our tour inspection team and has co-hosted several tours with Scott McGregor, so a love of train travel is now coursing through her veins. Scott McGregor SCOTT MCGREGOR has been involved in the media for over 30 years as an actor, presenter, writer and producer. But it s now sharing his love of travel, and particularly railway travel, where Scott s passion lies. Graduating from NIDA in 1979, he appeared in a wide range of stage, film and TV roles, including the lead in the ABC s epic mini-series 1915. He has presented and hosted numerous prime-time television series, including many years as the handyman on Better Homes and Gardens and Room For Improvement. He has also presented two series of his own Railway Adventures for Channels 10 and 7 and a number of programs for The History Channel. After more than a decade leading tours, he decided to establish Railway Adventures in 2012. He also owns and operates RUWENZORI an Orient Express-style tourist retreat on the Great Dividing Range near Mudgee.

DAY 1: Mon 22 April 2018 ARRIVE KUALA LUMPUR We arrive in Malaysia s bustling capital city of Kuala Lumpur and check into our centrally-located hotel. Most flights will arrive in the evening. Take a little time to relax and freshen up before joining your fellow travellers for celebratory welcome drinks and supper in our hotel. Overnight: Hilton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur (late evening drinks and supper) DAY 2: Tue 23 April KUALA LUMPUR After breakfast at the hotel, we enjoy a full day exploring the many sights and attractions of Kuala Lumpur on a guided tour. From our hotel, we ll take a short walk to the station and board our train to the Batu Caves. One of the most popular Hindu shrines outside of India, the cave complex is dedicated to the deity, Lord Murugan. A flight of 272 steps leads up to the temple cave, the site of the religious festival Thaipusam, where Hindu devotees converge for their yearly pilgrimage. Spend some time exploring these magnificent caves before our coach picks us up and returns us to the city. We ll then enjoy a coach tour of the Masjid Jamek (Jamek Mosque), where we ll pay a visit to Merdeka Square the site of the nation s historic Declaration of Independence. The massive City Centre is where the iconic Petronas Twin Towers the tallest twin towers in the world are located. We ll pause for lunch before we board our coach and travel to the National Monument, with its 15-metre bronze memorial dedicated to Malaysia s national heroes. We continue on to the Royal Selangor Pewter Museum, featuring the largest and most modern pewter factory in the world, where we ll be shown different processes, including casting, polishing and intricate engraving during our factory tour. We ll finish the day with a visit to the National Museum, before returning to our hotel, a short distance away by foot. The rest of the evening will be free for you to spend at your leisure. You might want to continue exploring this energetic city, or simply relax and enjoy the hotel facilities. Overnight: Hilton Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, (B, L) DAY 3: Wed 24 April KUALA LUMPUR - SANDAKAN We farewell Kuala Lumpur after breakfast this morning, boarding our flight to Sandakan in the state of Sabah. On arrival, we ll be taken to our hotel to check in, and we ll enjoy some free time to freshen up. Later in the evening, we ll re-group for a special Anzac reception dinner, hosted by the Sabah tourism board at the Governor s Residence. Overnight: Four Points by Sheraton, Sandakan (or similar), (B, D) DAY 4: Thu 25 April SANDAKAN - ANZAC DAY SERVICE It s an early start this morning to attend the Anzac Day dawn service at the Sandakan Memorial Park, once the site of the Prisoner of War camp. Here we will remember our fallen heroes 2,345 allied prisoners of war who suffered and perished during the infamous Death Marches from Sandakan to Ranau in 1945. The mostly Australian and British soldiers were taken to Sandakan to build airstrips. After enduring horrific treatment and malnourishment, they were forced on a torturously long walk to Ranau, a distance of over 260 kilometres. Only six Australians survived. The story of Sandakan is one of the most tragic of World War II. Every year, family members and friends of the POWs who perished during the Death Marches travel to Sandakan to reflect and remember. This event also remembers local residents who risked their lives to help the POWs during this horrific period. The service begins at dawn and is approximately one hour long, after which we ll have a gunfire breakfast at the memorial park and then enjoy the rest of the morning at leisure, perhaps even a second breakfast back at the hotel. We re-group in the afternoon for a short city tour, beginning at St Michael s church the oldest stone church in Sabah. We ll then continue on with a visit to historic Agnes Keith House and a nearby chinese temple with a beautiful view of the city, and we experience how the locals live on a floating village. The rest of the evening is at leisure. Overnight: Four Points by Sheraton, Sandakan, (or similar), (B) DAY 5: FRI 26 April SANDAKAN KINABATANGAN After breakfast this morning, we ll check out of our hotel and drive the short way to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for a close encounter with the wild man of Borneo. Here we ll take a short walk in this primary forest reserve to the observation deck to witness the orangutan feeding by the rangers and learn about the centre s conservation and rehabilitation efforts. We ll also visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. From there, we ll travel to the Sandakan Yacht Club jetty and board our boat to the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort in Abai, Kinabatangan. The 1.5-hour boat ride will take us across Sandakan Bay, passing historical Berhala island and fishing villages. On arrival at our resort, we ll check in and enjoy a cup of coffee and local banana fritters while we re briefed about the lodging and activities. Following this, we ll have some time to relax, freshen up and explore. Later in the afternoon, we ll board another, smaller boat for a cruise along Kinabatangan River in search of wildlife, and admire the stunning river landscape as the sun sets. If weather permits, we shall continue to observe the fireflies shimmering as the evening falls before we cruise back to our resort for dinner. After dinner, geared with our headlamps and torchlights, we ll take a stroll along the boardwalk to look for interesting insects and other unique wildlife that may turn up after dark. Overnight: Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort (B, D) DAY 6: Sat 27 April KINABATANGAN - KINABALU PARK We depart the resort after breakfast this morning, travelling back to Sandakan and arriving just in time for lunch at the local English tea house and restaurant. We ll then embark on the scenic journey to Kinabalu National Park, arriving at approximately 6pm (depending on the road conditions). We ll check in to our cosy lodge, freshen up and re-group for dinner at around 8pm at the Liwagu Restaurant. Overnight: Nepenthes Lodge, Kinabalu Park (or similar), (B, L, D) DAY 7: Sun 28 April KINABALU PARK KOTA KINABALU This morning, enjoy some free time to explore the stunning natural environment of the Kinabalu National Park. Discover the rare flora of the area with a morning walk around the Botanical Gardens or simply relax in the lodge. You ll also have the option of taking a side trip to the nearby Kundasang War Memorial. We ll depart this tranquil scene at midday and drive to the bustling centre of Kota Kinabalu. Here, we ll check in to our hotel and explore this frenetic city on a short afternoon tour. We ll visit all of the main sites, including the spectacular State Mosque with its gold motif domes. We ll enjoy dinner together later in the evening. Overnight: Hyatt Regency, Kota Kinabalu (B, L D) DAY 8: Mon 29 April KOTA KINABALU- LABUAN We ll enjoy breakfast and the morning at leisure before checking out with our overnight packs and boarding our plane for the short hop to the Federal Territory of Labuan. On arrival, we ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before embarking on a tour of the island with our expert local guide. Visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery; home to 3,908 graves of the soldiers who either died at the POW camp sites, on the Death Marches or in battle. The remains of the Allied troops were gathered from all over Borneo to be interred at the Cemetery, all bearing a plaque, mostly identified, but with a few graves still listed Known only to God. The peace and tranquility is serene as you seek to understand the senselessness of the deaths of so many brave young men. We ll then make our way up to Surrender Point where the 37th Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9th Division Australian Imperial Forces on the 9th September 1945, which led to the end of World War II in Borneo. There is a bronze plaque commemorating the surrender. We ll also visit the An Nur Jamek Mosque, with its futuristic architecture. Later on, we ll settle in to our accommodation for the night at the premier hotel on the island and enjoy dinner together. Overnight: Doncaster, Labuan (B, L, D)

DAY 9: Tue 30 April LABUAN BEAUFORT TENOM KOTA KINABALU Today is devoted to a unique journey on a section of the North Borneo Railway not usually explored or covered. This railway was built in the late 1890s and was originally constructed for the tobacco trade. We begin our morning with a ferry ride from Labuan to Menumbuk, and then continue by coach to the town of Beaufort. From here, we ll board our private, chartered railcar and embark on our journey on the North Borneo Railway. We ll travel through lush forest and follow a scenic river before arriving in the town of Tenom in time for lunch at a local restaurant. Following lunch, we ll depart Tenom, boarding our railcar once again and travelling back to Beaufort. We ll arrive in the early evening and travel by coach back to Kota Kinabalu. Enjoy the rest of the evening free for dinner in your own time. Overnight: Hyatt Regency, Kota Kinabalu (B, L) Day 10: Wed 1st May KOTA KINABALU PAPAR KOTA KINABALU We travel to Tanjung Aru Station this morning for our journey on another section of the character-filled North Borneo Railway, this time travelling by steam. In the company of our guide, we ll settle in for the journey though the jungle that includes a light mid-morning tea served on board. The wood-burning steam loco, built by the Vulcan Foundry in 1954, runs gently from Tanjung Aru through the towns of Kinarut and Papar and returns on the same route. Enjoy a colonial-style tiffin luncheon served on board as the scenic paddy fields, rubber trees and villages pass by your window. We ll make a few short excursion stops along the way to see the quaint Tien San Shi Temple at Kinarut and the open markets of Papar town. We ll also witness the turnabout operations of the engine at Papar. Our journey will take approximately four hours in total, after which we ll travel back to our hotel in Kota Kinabalu. Take the rest of the day to continue exploring the city or just relax. Later in the evening, we ll enjoy a celebratory farewell dinner and drinks, commemorating the close of our special Bornean adventure! Overnight: Hyatt Regency, Kota Kinabalu (B, L, D) DAY 11: Thurs 2nd May - KOTA KINABALU AFTERNOON DEPARTURE (B) This morning, you have the option of spending some time relaxing, exploring or enjoying the hotel facilities. You might want to include a visit to the excellent Lok Kawi Wildlife Park nearby, enjoy a swim at the beach, or explore the hotel s surrounds. Mid-afternoon we say farewell to Borneo and travel to the airport for our flights home or onwards to other adventures. OPTIONAL KUCHING EXTENSION DAY 1 (EXT): Thurs 2 May KOTA KINABALU - KUCHING For those who wish to extend their adventure to Kuching, the capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, we ll be taken to the airport mid-morning and arrive around noon. On arrival, we ll check in to our hotel and enjoy the afternoon at leisure to relax or explore the city, with lunch in your own time. We ll re-group for dinner at a local restaurant later in the evening. Overnight: The LimeTree Hotel, Kuching (B, D) DAY 2 (EXT): Fri 3 May KUCHING Following breakfast, we ll embark on a guided tour of Kuching. We ll begin with a visit to Fort Margherita, an unmistakeable landmark along the Sarawak River. The fort was built by Charles Brooke in 1879 to guard Kuching s river approaches from pirates. In the old days, a canon shot was fired from here every evening to mark the end of the government work day. Fort Margherita is also home to The Brooke Gallery, a museum that depicts the story and describes the history of the state of Sarawak. We ll then visit the interesting Chinese History Museum and the Ethnology Museum, which provides information about the local indigenous people and more. We ll then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. The camp housed both Allied prisoners of war and civilian internees, but has now been converted into a teachers training college.
