Staunton is one of Virginia s finest small cities. It offers the comforts and culture of a much larger city, while offering a more enjoyable lifestyle with beautiful neighbourhoods, quality schools, large urban parks, and award-winning healthcare. The City of Staunton has been recognized by the National T rust for Historic Preservation as one of its Distinctive Dozen communities - small cities that are the best in America in which to work, live and visit. Augusta County is the second largest land county in Virginia (968 square miles) and it surrounds independent cities of Staunton and Waynesboro. Augusta County is located near several major cities - Roanoke (85 miles), Richmond (100 miles), Washington D.C. (150 miles), Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach (200 miles). It draws second largest number of in-commuters of any locality in Central Virginia with 10,615 people daily. Average commute time is 20 minutes. The National Average is 25 minutes. Compared to the rest of the country, Staunton's cost of living is 4.00% lower than the U.S. Average.

The Economic Development for the City of Staunton says that what is attracting the economy to bloom in Staunton is the location, logistics and labour. The easy accessibility to two interstate highways, along with air and rail commuting facilities, has caused businesses to flourish. Now, Staunton is just a few hours away from Washington DC, Richmond and Norfolk. The City of Staunton receives over 74,000 travellers daily and over 25 million annually. In Staunton, companies aim at providing a strong work-life balance, this is how they achieve long-term businesses. In March 2012, Site Selection Magazine ranked Staunton/Augusta/Waynesboro s economy as one of the country s strongest micropolitan areas. A micropolitan region is an urbanized area comprising of a population size of 10,000 to 50,000 people, as defined by The US Census Bureau. Thomson Reuters ranked Augusta Health amongst its 100 T op Hospital and among the top 5% of U.S. Hospitals for patient safety and clinical excellence by HealthGrades. Augusta Health is reputed for its advanced programs in researching cancer and is considered one of the finest community hospitals in America. The Shenandoah Valley is a popular tourist destination; with hiking and camping being popular activities. The biggest attraction is the 300-square mile Shenandoah National Park, located in the northern half of the Valley, just east of I-81. The Park received approximately 1.17 million visitors in 2003 (for reference, Grand Canyon National Park received 4.12 million visitors; the Lincoln Memorial 3.27 million visitors; and Everglades National Park received 1.04 million visitors). Staunton boasts a thriving art and music scene, access to some of the best outdoor recreation on the East Coast, and one of the most authentic farm-to-table culinary experiences in Virginia. The walkable downtown proudly displays six historic districts and a dazzling variety of architecture. Shops, restaurants, theatres, and galleries are all independently operated, contributing to a rich and varied street life. Over 500,000 tourists visit the Valley s many attractions.

Staunton began as a waypoint and trade center for early American travelers moving along the Great Wagon Road and routes west from Richmond. Its location at two important road intersections is still one of the city s strongest assets. Two U.S. Highways (Routes 11 and 250) intersect in downtown Staunton, and two U.S. Interstates (I-64 and I-81) intersect just outside the city limits. Staunton is considered a transportation hub as it offers advanced access to rail, highway and air. Staunton s ground transportation network includes major highways like Interstate 81, Interstate 64, Route 250 and Route 11. A full host of freight logistic companies also service the area. With Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport being just 20 minutes away, there is commercial air service with United. Charlottesville Albemarle Airport, a 45-minute drive from Staunton, offers service with US Airways, United, Delta, and American Airlines. Air service is also provided by Dulles International Airport (2.5 hours), as well as Richmond and Roanoke (1.5 hours). Downtown Staunton is served by Amtrak lines including The Cardinal line (New York Washington, DC Cincinnati Indianapolis Chicago) and The Crescent line (New York Atlanta New Orleans.). Staunton and the surrounding area also has an extensive public transportation system offering trolley and shuttle service throughout the region. is situated less than 1 mile from I-81 and is positioned between Route 250 and Route 11. This is by assuming a median AADT flow of 20,000 for both Route 250 and 11 that equates to an annual flow of 14.6 million vehicles for both roads, having exited the Highway and passing within 1 mile of the mall. *

The I-81 corridor, rich in scenic and cultural resources, is also a major tourism corridor. An estimated $1.7 billion is expended annually in the corridor by visitors. These visitors are attracted by recreational opportunities in the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains, the rich Civil War history, and the numerous attractions in the 13 counties and numerous cities and towns located along the corridor. Staunton is served by Junctions 220, 221 & 222. The tables below show the Virginia Department of Transport recorded HOURLY average recorded vehicle numbers at the main Staunton junction and then at all 3 exits. These figures show that 4,250 vehicles pass within 1 mile of per hour on average per day this equates to 37,000,000 per year.
