Chapter of VTCI Publication of the LONG ISLAND THUNDERBIRD CLUB AUGUST 2017 A Very Special Guest This year we were honored to have US Army Specialist Hugo Gonzalez attend the show and say a few words about our charity, Building Homes for Heroes. Hugo was severely injured in combat in Baqubah Iraq on June 21, 2004. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, was placed in a medically induced coma, he underwent numerous surgeries as well as a craniotomy. He is legally blind. Building Homes for Heroes gifted Specialist Gonzalez, his wife, Any, and their three children a home in Port St. Lucie, Florida in October of 2015. Hugo broke our hearts as he spoke about his ordeal and recovery. He talked about what Building Homes for Heroes has done for him and many other seriously injured veterans and mentioned that they are targeted to gift a new home every 11 days to our heroes. The work that this organization does is a lifesaver for our heroes. The Long Island Thunderbirds and the Thunderbird Owners of NY (TONY) are proud to be able to do our part in raising money for this amazing organization, we couldn t do it without the help of our members and the car owners who come and support our show. 1

Can You Count to 157? and Stepping Up to the Plate: Steve Siben Where do I start? 74 pre -registered and 83 day of show! They just kept coming! As Colonel Custer would have said: Indians to the right - Indians to the left, but seriously folks, an unbelievable day! Not only was Mother Nature smiling, she was out playing a round of golf and enjoying the day! It was a home run with bases loaded and a rousing success for our twelfth annual Thunderbird Ford Show! Except for Dennis Benfante, Ken Weinberg who works all the time at his regular duties which are day of show and pre-register, today he was also counting ballots because of the dealer backing out with the money and as a result, we had to resort to people s choice voting. More on Ford later in my message leaving us with no funding with a short time to go to the show. I want to start by thanking some people who stepped up to the plate and hit everything that was thrown at them: Bob Marketta who handled most of the parking and our club DJ for a couple of hours until Kojak arrived. Frank Skrivanek, one of our new members, was like a bear in a shooting gallery. Moving and darting he was in constant movement all day. A special thank you to Larry Werkstell (aka Mr. Trophy) who donated three dozen bagels - cream cheese and butter for our early volunteers, and he arrived at about 7:30 ish with these goodies...and also, thank you to Art Fleming who worked with Ken at the day of show tent. Based on the amount of cars we had, that for next year, we will need at least three people at that location. from T.O.N.Y. thanks also goes to Bruce and Dianne Daly, Di our resident tent lady who worked the prereg. tent with Dennis and then Bruce worked with me do my rounds of raffle abusing for the 50/50 for cash, and then did assorted other duties...and more thanks to our VP Paul Rosina, who was doing his usual stuff, including picking Best in Show. Allen Leon A special thank you to Alan Leon who owns most of the BP stations on the Island for donating two gas cards of $25.00 each for the longest distance traveled. This is the third year that Alan has gotten involved. Allen is also working on a special project for us, and when details are available they will be published. Ford Lincoln of Huntington I ve tried to write this portion of my message three times, trying to find the right wording that would get the message across to both club memberships, and the dealership. The bottom line is, that with only a few weeks to go, the dealership notified us that there would be no funding for this year s show. Shirts, and awards were already ordered, so what to do. Our call was let s do it and fund it ourselves and hopefully break even. Well, as most of you know, not only did we break even, we even made a few bucks. What that means is that our charity, Building Homes for Heroes, will get a check from us for a thousand dollars. On a positive note Ford Lincoln of Huntington was more then generous through the ten year relationship. A few years ago I had asked Steve Weiss for more money over and above what they already have given us, and he did not bat an eye. For me, when I wanted to buy my Mustang Bullitt, they sold it to me at sticker, and other dealerships were getting five to ten thousand over sticker. When I needed a part at Ford I always received a discount. A sad ending to an excellent marriage, and who knows better about marriages is yours truly.. New Sponsor for 2018 On Sunday with all the hoop la and me running around like a chicken without its head, I heard my name being paged over the PA. As I approached the DJ table, I found Sandy Kane from Cruizin for a Cure, and Steve Siben from the law firm of Siben and Siben, waiting for me. Steve is also a T.O.N.Y. club member. With Sandy s help, Steve Siben has decided to fund us for next year. So, next year, our show will be judged by Endless Summer - no more people s choice. I m sure Dennis and Ken are dancing in the isles. Continued on Page 3 3

THE 12th ANNUAL THUNDERBIRD & All FORD CAR SHOW SUNDAY JULY 9 2017
Long Island Cruizin For A Cure Sunday September 10th Long Island Thunderbird Club Attend This Event Sandy Kane Event Chair and a Prostate Cancer survivor Long Island Cruizin For A Cure PO Box 604 Jericho, New York 11753 info@licruizinforacure.com www.licruizinforacure.com 888-LICruiz (542-7849) 516-681-7676 With the uncertainty surround the SEARS location for 2017 due to the sale of the property, Long Island Cruizin has made the decision to relocate and reduce the size of the event to make it more manageable. Our new location 1400 Old Country Road at the Old Country Road West Exit of the Wantagh Parkway Is all concrete no need to worry about a wet or dirty field Still offers the free PSA test provided by Winthrop University Hospital to all men over 40 Will still have Fonzie & Cha Chi hosting the event and spinning the oldies Will have a food court and a selection of vendors Will have another great event tee shirt designed by our resident artist John P The major difference is that we are limited by space to 450 exhibitor cars and will be closing down Pre-registration once we reach that point. If you pre-register your space will be held until 10:30AM and if you want to park together as a club you must come in together and all be pre-registered. There is a parking lot across the street as well as a Starbucks where you can all meet to come in, but The important thing to remember is PRE-REGISTER!!
GROUP LIFT PURCHASE Is anyone interested in buying a 4-post lift for their garage? I am refurbishing my garage, and have done some research on lifts. I have settled on the Backyard Buddy 7,000lb. Standard Lift. BYB can store 2 cars in the space of one, requiring just 9' wide, 16' long, 9' ceiling height, and a 120V outlet to store one car above another car, where the lower car is 60" at its highest point or less (e.g. my 1970 Boss 302 on top of my 2013 Boss 302, for example). The lift is made in Warren, OH, has the best construction & lift locking system in my opinion, offers jacks, drip pans, and wheels for movement, and offers the best warranty I can find. Go to their website & see for yourself www.backyardbuddy.com. It is also probably the most expensive 4-post lift at $4,595. But I want one! I would like to assemble a group of 10 or more car guys living here on Long Island who would like to buy this lift this summer. Then I intend to take the order to the All Ford Nationals (June 2-4), where Backyard Buddy will have a booth. My theory is in addition to the $300-400 show special, I can negotiate a volume price delivered to one "area". By negotiating a group purchase discount added to the reduced freight and the show special, I am going to try to knock $ 500-1,000 off the standard retail price of the lift. Please realize (1) You will still have to pay someone to install the lift at your home ($500-1,000), (2) You will have to modify your garage door tracks to clear the lift (~$200), (3) There is no guarantee of the final price; I can only try to get the $1,000 discount I seek. But 10 units should get us some discount; 20+ units will entice the manufacture to give a substantial discount. As an additional incentive, I would invite the Backyard Buddy Marketing team to come to Long Island and talk to / interview those who participated for their advertising testimonials. Please contact me by phone or email (below) with any questions, giving me your name, your email address, phone, and address as confirmation you are willing to spend the necessary funds in June-July. Thank you! John Dettori MCA National Director jdettori@optonline.net 631 807 1227
