Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 4 - A) Wellington Cable Car Museum (must see) Wellington Cable Car Museum is located in close proximity to the cable car's upper terminus. The museum opened in December 2000. The Cable Car Museum is about the country's only remaining public cable car system with its old machinery, engines, etc. You get to learn about the history of the cable car and ride on-board one of the old cars. There is also a souvenir shop in the museum. it houses original grip cars 1 and 3 and electric winding gear. Car 1 is in red 1970s livery, including contemporary advertising. Car 3 was restored in 2005 to a green livery dating from about 1905, and a bell from the San Francisco Cable Car was added. In the 1980s an original grip car and trailer were placed in the children's playground opposite Salamanca station. Operation hours: Daily 9.30 am - 5 pm. B) Museum of Wellington City & the Sea (must see) The Museum of Wellington City & Sea occupies the Bond Store, a historic building on Jervois Quay on the waterfront of Wellington Harbour. The conversion of this building into a museum building was completed in 1999. The museum started in 1972 as the Wellington Maritime Museum of the Wellington Harbour Board. In 1989 with the reorganisation of local bodies throughout New Zealand, the Museum was transferred to the Wellington City Council and expanded in scope to include social history of the region. An entire floor of the museum still remains dedicated to Maritime history and culture of Wellington. It is run by the Museums Trust. Opening Hours: Daily 10 am 5 pm. It is branded and commonly known as Te Papa and Our Place; "Te Papa Tongarewa" is broadly translatable as "the place of treasures of this land". The 36,000 square meter building opened in 1998. The History Collection includes many dresses and textiles, the oldest of which date back to the sixteenth century The History Collection also includes the New Zealand Post Archive with around 20,000 stamps and related objects. The cultural collections include collections on photography, taonga Māori (Māori cultural treasures), and pacific cultures. The long term exhibitions of cultural objects focus on New Zealand history, Māori culture and New Zealand's natural world. The hands-on and interactive exhibitions focus on engaging particularly young visitors and include both indoor areas and out-door areas built and planted for the purpose. You get to see exhibitions of famous traditional Maori Tattoo, which brought international recognition to the country. There are collections dating back to 4,000 B.C. and also contemporary tattoo art. Operation hours: Daily 12 pm - 5:30 pm (until 8 pm on Friday & Saturday). The Cottage dates back to 1858 and represents the late Georgian style. Almost everything inside the cottage is from the 1850-1880 period. It was built by hand from local New Zealand timber by William Wallis. Tours are available to hear about early European settlers and their descendants and the heritage garden is always open. It is considered to be one of the most interesting cricket museums in the South Pacific region. There is also a research library with numerous cricket books.
