History of Pasir Panjang The name Pasir Panjang literally means "long sand" in Malay, a reference to the long sandy beach that stretched along the coast in this area. Pasir Panjang Road, laid down by the Government Surveyor of Singapore, John Turnbull Thomson, in 1841 and by 1850, it was extended as far as the Jurong River. This facilitated the development of a linear coastal settlement which stretches all the way to Clementi Road. Providing a backdrop to the coastal settlement was a hilly ridge running parallel to the coastline. A low saddle along the ridge (known subsequently as The Gap ) presented the opportunity to construct an inland road, which became today s South Buona Vista Road.

In the 1920s, many of the wealthy Chinese built holiday and residential bungalows along the coast, some of which are still visible today. In 1930, some of the Malay families from the Kallang River Basin area were resettled here when Kallang Airport was constructed. Pasir Panjang was also a British defence position in the south and was a key battle site in World War II. Developments in the area took place mainly after the war was over. In the 1950s, the area began to take on a suburban character as bungalows were built along the coastline, fronting the sea. Since the late 1960s, the coastal area at Pasir Panjang has been reclaimed for wharves and is almost entirely devoted to containerisation. The Pasir Panjang Terminal of the Port of Singapore is also located here.

RAMPING UP PUBLIC TRANSPORT Getting around Singapore by rail will become easier and faster with the continued expansion of the MRT network through the following projects: The Thomson Line (TSL) will open in phases starting from 2019, connecting key areas such as Bishan and Toa Payoh to the CBD. The Downtown Line (DTL), to be operational by 2016, will cut travel time from Bukit Panjang and Bukit Timah to the city. The Circle Line Stage 6 (CCL6), which will be completed by 2025, will close the Circle Line loop by allowing direct journeys between Harbourfront and Marina Bay stations. The Eastern Regional Line (ERL) is expected to be ready by 2022 and will enhance public transport access in established housing areas such as Marine Parade.

6 STOPS to Marina Bay! Commuters will enjoy a direct route between key employment areas in the Central Business District, as well as the upcoming developments in the Marina Bay area as well as retail and office centres in the HarbourFront area. Transfers to other rail lines via the Circle Line will also be much shorter. For instance, a commuter going from Kent Ridge to Marina Bay today has to make two MRT transfers via three lines. With the closed loop of the Circle Line, he can reach his destination in a single train ride, and enjoy about 15 minutes of time saving.
