PUNE About: Known to have existed as a town since 937 AD, Pune is now the eighth largest metropolis of India, and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra, after Mumbai. It was once the center of power of the Maratha Empire, and has emerged as the cultural capital of the state. Pune is situated 560 meters above sea level on the Deccan plateau at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers. It is approachable by road through the Sahyadri ranges from Mumbai via one of the best Express-Ways in the country. You may even take a flight from Mumbai or a train to reach here. Today, this city is known for its excellent educational facilities and relative prosperity. It has an ever-growing industrial hinterland, with many multi-national information technology and automotive industries having set up their units in Pune district. The city is known for various cultural activities like classical music, spirituality, theater, sports, and literature. These activities and job opportunities attract migrants and students from all over India and abroad, which makes for a city of many communities and cultures. Climate: Mornings and Evenings could be cool. So do carry light jackets and pull overs Maximum temperature currently is 24 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature is 11 degree Celsius. Population: Population of Pune urban agglomerate is over 4 million. Airport: The Air force base at Lohegaon also serves as the domestic airport. It is located 3Kms away from Hotel Ista. Places to Visit: Though it is not a big tourist destination, Pune does boast a few places that are worth visiting for their historical value. Sinhagad Fort Sinhagad, earlier known as 'Kondhana', is the most prominent and popular fort in Pune. It is located at village Donaje, taluka-haveli at a distance of c.a. 25 km from Pune on a hill 1290 m high. Tanaji Malusare, Chhatrapati Shivaji's (the brave Maratha emperor and founder of the Maratha Empire) trusted and

Seite 2 brave General, fought a battle here all alone with the Mughal army. On hearing news of his death, Chh.Shivaji said. "We won the fort but lost the lion" ("Gad Ala Pan Sinha Gela"), and so after his death Chh. Shivaji renamed this "Kondhana" fort as "Sinhagad"- Lion s fort. The once magnificent fortress now remains as ruins to tell the tale of a brave victory. The easiest way to reach here is by car via the road to the top of the 2000 m mountain. Shinde Chhatri It is a memorial dedicated to the great soldier, Mahadji Shinde. For twenty years, between 1760 and 1780, he served as the commander-in-chief of the Maratha army under the Peshwas. The entire complex of the memorial also consists of a temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which was built by Mahadji himself, in the year 1794. He left for the holy abode the same year and in 1965, Madhavrao Sindhia got the entire complex built, along with the samadhi (memorial). The major attraction of the Shinde Chatri is its exquisite architecture, reflecting the style used in Rajasthan, India. Even years after its construction, the memorial retains its architectural designs and beauty and seems to be totally unaffected by time. You can visit it anytime between 6:00 am and 9:00 pm Location: Wanowrie, Pune Agakhan Palace Historically, Aga Khan Palace of Pune holds great significance. From 9 August 1942 to 6 May 1944, this palace was the prison for Mahatama Gandhi, his wife Kasturba and his secretary Mahadev Bhai Desai. The latter two died during their captivity at the Aga Khan Palace. Both of them have memorials in their name in the same complex near Mula River. In 1969, the Aga Khan Palace at Pune was donated to the Indian people by Aga Khan IV as a mark of respect to Gandhi and his philosophy. Today the Aga Khan Palace in Pune also houses a memorial on Gandhi where his ashes were kept. The historical palace also hosts a shop that deals in khadi and hand loomed textiles. Location: Pune-Nagar Road, Next to Hotel Ista

Seite 3 Shaniwarwada Shaniwar Wada a 13 storey palace of Peshwas was built by Bajirao-I, in the year 1736. It was headquarters of the Peshwas. The structure was built giving security the highest priority. The main entrance is known as 'Delhi Darwaja' & others have names like Ganesh, Mastani, Jambhal, Khidki. You will find the statue of Bajirao-1 on horse in front of Shaniwar wada. Inside one can see Ganesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, Aarsa Mahal, Hasti_DantMahal, DiwanKhana and a fountain. A light and music show is conducted every day showing history of Peshwas. The palace was the seat of Peshwa power and later was destroyed by a fire in 1828. All that remains are the walls that fortified this palace, with sturdy doors, studded with spikes for added protection. Sound And Light Show timings: 8:15 pm to 9:10 pm in English Location: Shaniwarpeth, Pune Vishrambaug Wada: Vishrambaug Wada, a fine mansion situated in central Pune on the Bajirao Road, was the luxurious residence of Peshwa Bajirao II, the last Peshwa (ruler) of Maratha confederacy, in early seventeenth century. The 20,000 sq. ft. wada presently houses a post office on its ground floor, a few other offices of the municipal corporation and a small museum of Maratha artefacts put together by noted Maratha historian, Babasaheb Purandare. This structure is famous for its fine entrance and the balcony with carved woodwork. Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum: Location: Shukawar Peth, on the Bajirao Road. It s one of the finest museums in the Pune city. Now under the ownership and control of the Department of Archaeology, Government of Maharashtra, it was originally under the possession of Dr. Dinkar G. Kelkar, who built the assimilation slowly and gradually, devoting more than 40 years of his life towards it. His endeavor to start a museum started in the year 1920, when he started gathering artifacts to be displayed inside it. By the year 1960, Dr. Dinkar had more than

Seite 4 15,000 items in his possession. With time Department of Archaeology added more items to his collection and today, the number of artifacts owned by them number more than 20,000. Most of the items, that make up the collection of the Kelkar Museum, date back to somewhere between 18th and 19th century. At present, only 2500 items have been displayed for public viewing consisting of an impressive collection of musical instruments, compilation of Mughal antiques like instruments, lamps, paintings, etc., an exquisite collection of nutcrackers, carved palace doors, pottery, etc. The display collection of the museum also includes paintings depicting scenes from the Great Indian Epic Ramayana. Last but not the least is the collection comprising of Armors made of fish scales and crocodile skin, pistols, long barreled muskets, daggers, shields, swords and small cannons, along with the betel boxes, lime containers and spittoons used by the Maharajas. One of the most magnificent structures inside the museum comprises of the recreation of the famous Mastani Mahal. Parvati Hill and Temples: The highest point in the city of Pune, the Parvati hill is visible from almost every part of Pune. In spite of its location in the midst of the bustling old areas, the Parvati Hill offers a spell bounding aerial view of the city. The temples located on this hill are the oldest heritage structures in Pune and reminiscent of the Peshwas (rulers) of Maratha Empire. The temples were built during the rule of Nana Saheb Peshwa in the 17 th Century. The Parvati museum houses portraits of heroes of the Peshwa Dynasty, besides old manuscripts, weapons and coins. According to records, the main idol was carved out of gold by craftsmen from Karnataka. It was however stolen in 1932, and was replaced by silver idols plated with gold. The gates of Parvati temple open at 5:00 am and close at 8 am. Location: Near Swargate

Seite 5 Pataleshwar caves: The Pataleshwar Cave Temple is a rock-cut cave temple, carved out in the 8th century during the reign of Rashtrakuta dynasty. It is located on the downtown Jungli Maharaj Road. The temple, made of basalt rock, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The sanctum houses a linga - the symbol of Shiva and there are two smaller cells on each side. In front of the cave is a circular Nandi mandapa, its umbrella shaped canopy supported by massive square pillars. This mandapa is one of the peculiar structures of Pataleshwar. The temple was left incomplete, possibly because of a fault line found at the back of the sanctum sanctorum, which made the further sculpting unsafe or political upheaval resulting in loss of patronage. Still in use, the linga is anointed with ghee and yogurt. A brass temple bell hangs outside the basalt entryway. Do not use the same hand for eating and also for taking food from a common dish on the dining table. Tasting and taking a sip from others glasses is regarded as violation of private space. Do not break temple rules while on a visit to a temple. Always take off your footwear when entering a temple. Women should preferably wear modest clothes while going to a religious place. Do not touch anyone or receive/give anything with your left hand. Do not drink any alcohol or smoke in public. It s offensive. Do not discuss religion, or caste. Do not drink local tap water, drink bottled water only. Unless you are planning to stay in the country longer and are acclimatized to the conditions here.

Seite 8 Do not take offers of spiritual salvation and magic remedies from saints, godmen and quacks. There is no way you can distinguish the genuine ones from the crooks. Do not try to explore Indian road yourself, or to drive in India unless you have been trained on Indian roads. Do not ever purchase air, rail or bus tickets through strangers or unauthorized travel agents or tour operators. In any case avoid persistent touts and taxi-drivers at airport/stations/bus stand to help you find your hotel. Always use tourist assistance desk for proper advice. Do not hire any type of transportation from unlicensed operators. In case of taxis and auto-rickshaws, try to hire them from the pre-paid booths if possible. Otherwise, insist on going by the meter or set a fare in advance to avoid being over charged. India Dos Do dress modestly if you are female. Avoid short skirts, shorts, low, loose collars. Do prepare yourself at the earliest. Indian traffic and roads are hapless. Do greet people with big smile. Handshake with ladies especially in rural areas should be avoided. Do carry a copy of your Passport rather than the original itself while visiting local places in the city. Do immunize yourself against various diseases like typhoid, malaria, hepatitis and tetanus that are prevalent in India. Do take whatever medications you need in ample supply as you may not find medicines made by the same pharmacy even though substitutes are available. You may bargain with half price when you buy things from roadside stalls or hawkers, but do not bargain in proper shops especially where display fixed price signs. Do make sure to remove your footwear when visiting a place of worship or mausoleum.
