The Journey Begins - Unit 4 Worksheets - Reader 5 More Reading Worksheet 1 Read this article about a man who began travelling around the world in 2008. (Adapted from an article in The Hindu, Kochi, 18 August 2010) Footloose round the world 18 August 2010 By our Staff Reporter Graham Hughes, 31, is set to enter the Guinness Book of World Records as the first man to have travelled to all the countries in the world. His voyage began on January 1, 2009 and he is almost there 161 completed and 39 to go. Graham moved into Asia after visiting South America, The Caribbean, Central and North America, Europe and Africa. Graham strikes bonds of friendship with everyone, everywhere. When he tells stories about the far corners of the earth, his audience remains rapt. This interview took place at Kochi when Graham was trying to find a boat to Sri Lanka.
The Idea: The idea was born eight years ago. I was backpacking around South East Asia and longed to go around the world. In 2008, I decided to go ahead and do it. My budget was 20,000 pounds. I travel alone, sometimes accompanied by cameramen from the television companies for short distances. I plan everything on my own and post a diary on my blog. The Challenge: Expedition expenses are met from personal funds and contributions from National Geographic, Lonely Planet and BBC. I observe certain Guinness Book of Records rules like not using air transport or transport of my own. So far I have used a strange mix of transport, from cargo ships to private yachts and fishing vessels. I manage to gather support by talking to people and explaining what I m doing and they have been helpful. In a new country: I spend some time at each place and usually have to wait for visas other travel documents. I travel fast and travel light (a sleeping bag, a week s change of clothes, a camcorder and medicines, all in a backpack). I travel with local people and often stay with them. This helps me get a better feel of the place. It is much better than flying into an airport and then flying out again. There have been some bad experiences but largely, it has been a wonderful journey among friendly people. Future Plans: I plan to write a book once I end this expedition in New Zealand.
