Welcome to North Tyneside The home of opportunities. Including two of the UK s largest and most successful office parks, two Enterprise Zone sites, competitive wages, low operating costs, superb national and global transport links, research and development expertise and more. Just some of the organisations already in North Tyneside:

Why we are best for business World-class premises Choose from some of the most modern, flexible and affordable business and industrial space on the market, including Cobalt; the UK s largest office park, and Quorum Business Park; which offers one of the most attractive location packages in the UK. Cost-effective North Tyneside is one of the most cost-effective regions in the UK, with very competitive wages and lower than average operating costs, ensuring value for money and a high return on investment. Well-connected North Tyneside has an international airport and ferry and cruise terminals on the doorstep. It also benefits from fantastic road links throughout the area and beyond, with relatively low levels of congestion. Plus the fast and efficient Tyne Tunnel makes it quick and easy to connect to the south of the region. Although a relatively small borough, North Tyneside punches above its weight when it comes to what it can offer investors. The MJ s Investment Guide to England: Employment and Infrastructure High-quality public transport includes the Tyne and Wear Metro Rapid Transit System, which links directly to the East Coast main rail line and to Newcastle International Airport - which offers up to 15 scheduled flights to London each day, as well as many other European and global destinations. Home to two enterprise zone sites Enterprise Zone status has been granted to two sites within one of the largest regeneration projects in the UK and Europe; the River Tyne North Bank area. These sites include the former Swan Hunter Yard in North Tyneside and the Port of Tyne North Estate. The Enterprise Zone is expected to create over 7,000 direct new jobs by 2022. Productive people The loyalty, productivity, commitment and work ethic of North Tyneside s workforce is one of the area s most valuable assets. Our people are not just highly skilled, they are also extremely adaptable, friendly and hard-working. Skills and training provision The four local universities of Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Durham provide world-class higher education to around 85,000 students. Once graduated, around two-thirds stay in the area, giving companies access to fresh talent, year after year.

Research and innovation With a range of Innovation Hubs linked to the expertise of the region s universities, North Tyneside brings together research and development activity and university spin-off companies in locations which encourage knowledge-sharing and collaborative working. Key sectors North Tyneside has a diverse economy comprising traditional manufacturing and engineering industries as well as a mix of exciting new sectors including digital, health and life sciences and renewable energy. Quality of life North Tyneside and its surrounding areas offer an outstanding quality of life. Enjoy affordable executive housing, high-performing schools, stunning award-winning beaches, unique town centres and beautiful open spaces. The area also boasts a wide range of international sporting and leisure activities, culture and heritage, vibrant and varied entertainment, a cosmopolitan nightlife and much more.

best for business Because of our... World-class premises Modern, flexible and affordable - North Tyneside is home to over 50 business sites, including the UK s biggest and most successful office park. Whether you re looking for a new HQ, a small office base or a 40 hectare industrial facility with river access, all of our sites offer fantastic opportunities for location or expansion. The location and quality of Intersect 19 combined with the immediate access to a labour force made the development an obvious choice for our expansion programme." Bruce McHardy, Managing Director, Fishers

Some of our most popular sites include: Cobalt Business Park Cobalt is the largest and most successful office park in the UK, offering over two million square feet of office space, built or under construction. It is already home to national and global organisations including Procter & Gamble, Accenture, G4S, Balfour Beatty, Hewlett Packard, EE, Jobcentre Plus and Santander. Cobalt is also one of the best-connected and sustainable parks in the UK, located just off the A19 and close to the Tyne Tunnel. The park has an employment catchment of 1.1 million, and once complete, it will employ more than 18,000 people. Cobalt also offers an exclusive staff benefits package including events, lifestyle and travel discounts. For more information visit www.cobaltpark.co.uk Both Quorum and Cobalt should be seen nationally as leading examples of imaginative, people friendly business parks. They have both been highly successful in attracting and retaining only the best calibre of staff. Tony Hordon, Senior Director, Business Space, DTZ Newcastle Cobalt Data Centre The Cobalt Data Centre Campus represents an advanced, energy-efficient data centre campus, located at Cobalt Park, consisting three separate state-of-the-art facilities; providing 110,480 sq ft of net-technical space. Each data centre has been completed to a powered shell standard in order to facilitate bespoke fit-out to occupier requirements (all available and can be fiited-out in 16-18 weeks); with individual halls ranging between 6,458-11,474 sq ft. In addition the site has the benefit of advanced connectivity to the UK fibre backbone network providing the highest levels of speed and capacity. For more information visit www.cobaltdatacentre.com Quorum Business Park Quorum is one of the most successful business parks in the country, with 12 companies and 4,000 jobs coming to the park over the last 4 years. Major organisations such as Tesco Bank, Convergys, Fabricom, Ebiquity and insurethebox have all moved to the park, attracted by the first class amenities and superb location. Situated less than four miles from Newcastle City Centre, it benefits from excellent transport links. It also offers a free on-site sports club, shops, restaurants, training facilities and more. For more information visit www.quorumbp.co.uk Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate The Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate is a well-established industrial, storage, distribution and office park estate. It also offers 40 acres of development land, offering great opportunities for business. Its prime location, just off the A19 Tyne Tunnel approach road, makes it ideal for access to the rest of the region. The estate is also home to Axis 19 which has an additional 215,000 sq ft of space and Intersect 19 - a new 300,000 sq ft development, offering high bay units for industrial, commercial and distribution needs. best for business Because we are... Cost effective We first came to North Tyneside with a communications centre operation. It has been so successful that we again chose North Tyneside for a major office requirement. Stephen Lee, EE Competitive wages and lower operating costs make North Tyneside one of the most financially rewarding places to locate in the UK. You can easily secure high quality office or industrial space and pay up to 50% less than in London and the South East, or 20% less than in Leeds or Manchester. Average wages are around 12% below the national average and operating costs are also generally lower; with suppliers and services being typically less than other parts of the country. Less congestion also makes it easier to deal with suppliers and customers. Such lower costs also make it affordable for businesses to expand, employing more staff and creating additional jobs. Plus, if your business locates within one of the two Enterprise Zone sites in North Tyneside, it will reduce your costs even further.

High quality office and industrial space is up to 50% less than in London and the South East and 20% less than Leeds or Manchester, with average wages around 12% below the national average.

Because we are... Well-connected North Tyneside enjoys excellent road, rail, sea and air links to the rest of the UK, Europe and beyond. These services are expanding all the time as the area develops as an economic hub. Newcastle International Airport voted Best UK Airport by the Airport Operators Association (AOA)for the last four years is just a short drive from the borough, and provides regular access to key airport hubs including: 15 flights a day to London s Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead, with an approximate fligh t time of one hour 6 flights per day to Amsterdam Schipol A daily Emirates 777 service to Dubai, which provides access to a global network of routes and destinations Direct flights to a range of major European cities, including Paris, Rome, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Geneva and Dusseldorf, as well as a range of UK cities. Rapid regional and national road links are offered via the A1 and A19. The opening of a second Tyne Tunnel has transformed North East traffic flow, eliminating queues and unlocking even more potential for business. High quality public transport includes the quick and convenient Tyne and Wear Metro system, which is currently undergoing a 400m programme of investment. The Metro directly links North Tyneside to Newcastle International Airport and Newcastle Central Station. From Newcastle Central Station, the cities of London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh can all be reached in less than three hours, with trains to London running every half hour. The Port of Tyne offers roll-on, roll-off facilities, deep-water river berths and customs-approved warehousing and storage, including a one-stop logistics service. It also has an international passenger ferry terminal offering cruises to European destinations, with new routes being connected all the time.

best for business Because we are... Home to two enterprise zone sites North Tyneside is home to two new Enterprise Zone sites; the former Swan Hunter shipyard and the Port of Tyne North Estate, which is the largest single Enterprise Zone site at 30 hectares. The two sites are part of the overall North East Low Carbon and Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise Zone. The River Tyne North Bank area has been identified by the government as one of six Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE) across the UK.

North Tyneside is primed and ready for growth. The North Bank of the Tyne offers a wealth of opportunity for subsea and offshore industries with deep port locations and easy access to the North Sea. James Ramsbotham, Chief Executive, North East Chamber of Commerce Enterprise Zone sites can offer investors: Business rate discounts or enhanced capital allowances A simplified planning regime making development and growth quicker and easier Government support to ensure that superfast broadband is rolled out throughout the Enterprise Zone. The former Swan Hunter site occupies a key riverside location close to Wallsend town centre and forms part of a much larger strategic, deep water, riverside employment area. This site is ideal for smaller companies either in the offshore wind turbine supply chain or in the subsea sector. Firms locating here can benefit from business rate relief for five years. North Tyneside Council has invested 13.6m, including 6.8m ERDF funding, in extensive infrastructure improvements to the site. The works include additional utility provision, access improvements, quay edge improvements and dredging. The Port of Tyne North Estate Enterprise Zone site, which is only 96 nautical miles from Dogger Bank, is targeted at a large inward investor in the offshore wind turbine industry. This site benefits from enhanced capital allowances, with 30 hectares of a larger 50 hectare site designated as an Enterprise Zone. It is estimated this Enterprise Zone will bring around 7,000 new direct jobs to the area, with at least as many new indirect jobs in the local supply chain. A Centre for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE) The River Tyne North Bank area has also been identified by the government as one of six Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering (COREs) across the UK. COREs are partnerships between Central and Local Government and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) that ensure businesses looking to invest in manufacturing for the renewables sector get the most comprehensive support possible. Momentum towards a low carbon economy is accelerating, and the North East is one of the best places to build low carbon businesses in order to compete in the global market. It has the right infrastructure for manufacturing, access to a skilled workforce, an experienced local supply chain and committed local leadership. The River Tyne itself offers a world class port and extensive development opportunities. It is also in close proximity to the largest planned wind farm zone positioned directly off the North East coast, and represents a major opportunity for energy companies, developers, turbine manufacturers and installation specialists.

best for business Because of our... Productive people North Tyneside s workforce is one of our most important assets. Our people are loyal, committed, highly skilled, adaptable, friendly, hard-working and productive. The result is staff you will want to keep, who will also want to stay with you, adding real value to your business as it grows. Plus, with almost one million residents located within a 30 minute drive, there is a vast pool of talented individuals to tap into, to drive your business forward. One quarter of the local labour pool is educated to degree level and this figure continues to rise. Once qualified, around two-thirds choose to stay in the area to pursue a career, meaning businesses can recruit from a fresh wave of talented graduates, year after year.

Because of our... Skills and training provision As a business-focused university we re acutely aware of the role highlyskilled, well-qualified people can play in a firm s success. From apprenticeship through to postgraduate researcher, the North East offers the opportunity for career long learning. Andrew Sugden, Head of External Engagement, Northumbria University We know how important it is for businesses to have access to a workforce with the right skills. That is why we have established strong links between our business community, education and training providers, so that the skills needs of local businesses can be matched with training provision. The result is that many of our schools and colleges already offer training tailored to emerging business sectors, and our young people are equipped with the skills and qualifications that local businesses need. For example, a new Energy Academy located next to our enterprise zone site on the River Tyne offers bespoke skills training for the renewables sector. Our unique borough-wide Learning Trust, involving 34 schools, local employers and further and higher education institutes, works to improve education and training for young people. Members of our North Tyneside Business Forum have joined forces with North Tyneside-based Tyne Metropolitan College to ensure that businesses future skills needs can be met. North Tyneside Council also offers support to recruit and train your workforce, including the recruitment of apprentices. All of this means that North Tyneside is ahead of the game when it comes to workforce development, listening to businesses and helping them meet their people and skills needs.

best for business These centres bring together research and development activity and university spin-off companies in locations that encourage knowledge-sharing and collaborative working.

Because of our... Research and innovation Locating to North Tyneside means you have internationally renowned research and development capabilities and facilities on your doorstep. The region s four universities of Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Durham, are at the forefront of research and development across a range of sectors including engineering, energy, applied science, design and medicine - and all enjoy close links with local business and industry. Innovation Hubs linked to the expertise of the universities bring together research and development activity and university spin-off companies in locations that encourage knowledgesharing and collaborative working. They are also supported by a strong network of supply chain initiatives and peer-group networking across a range of sectors. In North Tyneside, plans for new research and development facilities and incubator hubs are in the pipeline for the Enterprise Zone sites on the North Bank of the Tyne, to support new businesses in advanced manufacturing. The National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) The North East is also home to the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec). Narec has invested over 150 million of UK Government, private sector and European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) in world-leading research, test and demonstration capabilities which are enabling industry to deliver lower cost and more reliable offshore wind, wave and tidal energy technologies. The Catapult Narec is a partner in the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult which forms part of an elite network of seven technology and innovation centres established and overseen by the Technology Strategy Board. The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult will coordinate, lead and facilitate the rapid development and commercialisation of innovative technologies and technological solutions that also give maximum economic impact in the field of offshore renewable energy. For more information on Narec and The Catapult, visit www.narec.co.uk

best for business Because of our... Key sectors Engineering and production The North East area is home to a population of two million people. Today the borough offers a wide range of engineering expertise from conventional capabilities to new cutting edge fields of manufacturing. The River Tyne remains a focal point for engineering excellence and is one of the strongest providers of offshore-related technology in the world including sub-sea and deep-water technologies. OGN and SMD are just two of the world-class companies based here. Increasing numbers of world-class marine and marine-related technology companies are also being attracted to the region because of its skills base, access to Europe and highly developed infrastructure.

Business, professional and financial services The business, professional and financial service sector in North Tyneside has enjoyed strong growth in recent years as part of the area s developing knowledge economy. These services have been driven by economic growth and investment and are helping the area to compete in the global marketplace. Businesses who have already located in the borough include Tesco Bank, Santander, Convergys, EE and Balfour Beatty. Digital The digital and software industry is growing at a rapid rate in the region with clusters of new and fast growing businesses emerging in North Tyneside. Cobalt Data Centres are also expected to attract investment from national and international businesses, driving growth and the transfer of technology in this fast moving industry. Healthcare and life sciences We want the North East to be Europe s premier location for low carbon, sustainable, knowledgebased private sector-led growth and jobs. Edward Twiddy, NELEP Director The growth of healthcare and life sciences in recent years has played a major part in building the region s knowledge economy. Over 200m has been invested in the past five years to develop world-leading technologies. Examples of companies that are taking advantage of the opportunities here are Procter and Gamble, Aesica and Shasun Pharma Solutions. Offshore renewables The North East of England is a leading manufacturing and supply base for the marine and offshore engineering industry, offering easy access to the world s largest offshore wind market and huge opprtunities for ambitious companies aiming to grow in this sector. A wide variety of riverside locations is available, many of which benefit from Enterprise Zone status. The region also benefits from three deep-water ports with experience of logistics for the offshore industry. The area is renowned for its engineering and maritime heritage with a diverse skills base and extensive supply chain including WD Close, Quick Hydraulics, Mammoet UK and CMR Group. Oil and gas With more than 70% of the oil and gas platforms operating in the North Sea having been built in North East England, backed up by vast storage, handling and refining facilities, the area is a major centre for the industry in the UK. As well as its enviable reputation for world-beating subsea technology - for which it is a UK Centre of Excellence - and its close proximity to the North Sea oil and gas fields, the region has attracted some of the leading energy, engineering and design companies involved in the sector including Maersk, Barrier Group, Pipetawse, Anglitemp and Fabricom Offshore Services.
