Outbreak summary: Total outbreaks = 46 (Submitted) Species Susceptible Cases Deaths Destroyed Slaughtered Birds 11400799 2872873 1177169 10223630 0 Common Grackle 10 8 2 0 Barn Swallow 1 1 1 0 Epidemiology Epidemiological comments As part of the surveillance activities and the epidemiological investigation carried out in response to the H7N3 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) event occurred in Jalisco, the National Food Quality, Food Safety and Health Service (SENASICA) continues to take epidemiological surveillance actions. So far, 730 production units (272 layer farms, 46 breeder farms and 202 backyard farms including fighting birds) have been sampled. A total of 81,835 samples have been tested and 44 H7N3 HPAI isolates have been identified in commercial layer and breeder farms and two in wild birds. During the depopulation activities in the poultry farms, 11.4 million birds have been slaughtered and destroyed and around 11 other million birds have been slaughtered as a pre-emptive measure as agreed by farmers in order to avoid the establishment and spread of the virus. Therefore, compensation for the slaughter and disposal of around 22.4 million birds will be implemented. In addition to the sampling carried out in Jalisco, surveillance activities continue at the national level in poultry and backyard farms. It includes 182,429 serological and virological samples which are processed in the official laboratories. As part of the measures to prevent, control and eradicate the virus, a temporary official vaccine programme of birds at risk began on 26 June 2012, through the production and application of an emulsified vaccine manufactured in Mexico by the official sector. 165.9 million doses have been applied; these figures include booster vaccination. A vaccine bank of 70 million doses is currently available. 117 days have elapsed since the last virus isolation in commercial farms in Jalisco, which means a remission of 5.6 incubation periods for notifiable avian influenza virus. Therefore, on 16 November 2012, the event of HPAI H7N3 having occurred last June has been eradicated and surveillance and epidemiological investigation of notifiable avian influenza will continue as provided in Chapter 10.4.28, 10.4.29 and 10.4.30 of the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code.
