Tourism Enhancement Grant Secured for Smyrna Train Depot Smyrna Parks and Recreation Department, along with support from the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, secured a matching funds grant from the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development in the amount of $36,000 to enhance our Depot District. The total $72,000 project s purpose is to install a stage canopy, additional seating area, stage lighting, stage sound, and associated signage at the Smyrna Train Depot. This project will help reduce set-up time for staff as well as the bands and allow protection for the performers and their equipment from inclement weather. The additional seating will allow patrons level terrain and provide ADA access. The Depot District has become the home for community events, concerts, art shows, and recreational programs. One of the main reasons the Train Depot and the Depot District have become so popular is because of partnerships with Smyrna Independent Merchants Association (SiMA), Carpe Artista, local schools, and local businesses. The Town of Smyrna, in partnership with SiMA, presents the Smyrna Farmer s Market at the Train Depot each Saturday in the summer months. The town also hosts many community events and concerts in the Depot District with help from the local arts group, Carpe Artista. Davidson, Williamson and Rutherford Counties are the top 3 in travel-related expenditures for the Mid-Cumberland Region which is why the Town of Smyrna is working hard to brand the 140 year old Train Depot Building and the downtown area as the Depot District. The town, along with the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, is excited to see the Depot District grow for the Smyrna Community as well as visitors to our town.
