JWST vs. Hubble Different Orbit Hubble is located in low Earth orbit, just 570km from the Earth s surface. In contrast, JWST will be more than 2500 times as far, 1.5 million km away, or roughly four times the distance from the Earth to the Moon. Why does this matter? To image effectively in infrared (heat) light, we need to be COLD (50K). Being at L2 puts all the big heat sources (Sun, Earth & Moon) in one part of the sky, making it easier to shield the telescope from that unwanted heat. JWST can dwell on one spot continuously for days at a time (versus ~25 minutes for Hubble)
