Balkans Explorer MULTI-CENTRE HOLIDAY 2018

WELCOME TO the Balkans This holiday uncovers some hidden highlights of former Yugoslavia, enjoying a wonderful variety of walks and sightseeing in Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. There is a variety of walking and touring, giving you a fascinating mix of walks, unmissable sights and hidden gems. Montenegro Described as 'the Pearl of the Mediterranean', this small country (it's only two-thirds the size of Wales) is full of wild beauty, including crystal-clear lakes, tumbling rivers and majestic mountains. In summer, the air abounds with heady scents of conifers, wild herbs and blossoms. The country's rural areas are ideal locations for getting off the beaten track and exploring on foot, with stunning vistas to be enjoyed from many routes. Meaning 'Black Mountain', Montenegro has long sat on the border between East and West. This geographical position has contributed to the development of a rich cultural history, with both Christian and Islamic influences, and it is a fascinating place for anyone with some level of interest in European history - both recent and more ancient - to visit. Serbia Like its neighbour Montenegro, Serbia has a wealth of cultural heritage. Located centrally within the Balkan states, it too lay between various empires and different faiths. Wars between the competing powers saw considerable migration of different peoples. This has led to an abundance of cultural exchange and today it is a country and society that is multi-ethnic, multicultural and multi-faith. Serbia is also a country of lush, wooded hills, rugged landscapes and dramatic gorges, all waiting to be explored. In mountainous areas, experience ancient traditions and ways of life that coexist with modern life. The warmth and friendliness of the welcome from the locals will long remain in your memory. 2 Call 0345 470 7558 or visit hfholidays.co.uk This holiday has a dedicated tour guide and a number of local guides to give you the best insight to the area that you are visiting. Bosnia & Herzegovina With a history of permanent human settlement that traces back to the Neolithic age, Bosnia & Herzegovina is known not only for its rich cultural heritage but also its stunning natural environment. The country has a variety of landscapes, from the mountainous regions in the centre and east of the country to the flat land in the northeast. Its largely rural hinterland, with picturesque mountainscapes, contrasts with historic centres such as Mostar. Much like its fellow Balkan states, Bosnia & Herzegovina is an intriguing blend of 'east meets west', with influences from both the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires still being felt today in its culture, architecture and cuisine.

WALKING SAFETY Hydration: In warm weather it is very important to keep hydrated. You will need to carry water with you on walks, and more during hot weather or on more demanding walks. One good way of hydrating is to use a hydration pack which allows drinking without the need to frequently stop. This can then be filled up from additional water sources as required. Insurance: Insurance is a condition of booking. Therefore if you have not already arranged insurance, it is imperative that you do so, and advise us of the insurance company and policy number. We have negotiated special holiday insurance and full details of this cover can be found in our brochure or at hfholidays.co.uk. There is no extra charge for preexisting illnesses. If you would like to purchase insurance from us please call us on 020 8732 1220 or email holidayservices@hfholidays.co.uk. Even with an EHIC card, medicines and out-patient treatment normally have to be paid for at the time and the costs reclaimed afterwards details are available at dh.gov.uk/travellers. Therefore insurance is extremely important, as is access to emergency money, preferably a credit card. WHAT TO WEAR & BRING To enjoy your walking comfortably and safely, it is essential that your footwear, clothing and equipment are suitable for the conditions likely to be encountered. Changeable weather is possible throughout the year, so our advice is to come prepared comfortable all outdoor eventualities. clothing You will need: waterproof jacket and overtrousers ankle supporting footwear with non-slip soles small rucksack water bottle (at least 2 litres, more for hot climates) and a thermos flask if you wish sunhat, sun cream and sunglasses In addition to the above, the following are recommended to all walkers, and are essential for mountainous and hilly areas: walking boots spare pullover or fleece hat and gloves spare high-energy food e.g. chocolate bar or Kendal mint cake torch 6 Call 0345 470 7558 or visit hfholidays.co.uk You may also wish to consider bringing: walking pole(s) many guests find these useful, particularly for descents camera personal first aid kit Footwear: We recommend wearing walking boots on all our walks, as these provide the best ankle support and grip. Modern approach shoes offer appropriate levels of grip and may be worn on some low level walks, but users should be aware that they offer less ankle support. Lightweight trainers, denim jeans and waterproof capes are not recommended for any walks.
