1. Hydrographic Service: General Hellenic Navy Hydrographic Service (HNHS) is the governmental body of the Hellenic Republic responsible to conduct hydrographic and oceanographic surveys for the operational needs of the Hellenic Navy, as well as for the benefit of International and National Navigational by producing and updating nautical charts and other nautical publications aiming in the safety of human life at sea and the protection of the environment around Greece. In April 2009 Commodore Demetrios Paliatsos HN has been appointed as the new Director (Hydrographer) of HNHS. 2. Surveys Coverage of new surveys During the period 2007-2008, an extensive systematic program of surveys has been conducted. The three hydrographic vessels of the HNHS were deployed 809 days of surveying operations (mainly in coastal areas, ports and harbor approaches). A total area of 9.700 km 2 has been surveyed, covering Greek and International waters. The main operations are depicted in the attached chart (Annex A). New technologies and / or equipment HNHS, participating in the strategic planning of the Ministry of National Defence for the use of Information Technology, implemented under the third European Community Support Framework, the project Development of a Marine Geographical Information System. The project aims, to develop automated processing methods for the marine geographic information, and to best serve the citizens and the public and private organizations which have direct interest for the information and products coming out of the HNHS. In particular, the Marine GIS will form the basis for the management of information collected by the HNHS, the publication of its products, and also for any study related to shipping and maritime activities. In addition, the Marine GIS will help the improvement and modernization of the methods of information dissemination, in support of the seafarers in the Greek and adjacent seas as well as the operational requirements of the Hellenic Navy. The expected outcomes from the project are: - Improvement in information management - Increased safety for Navigation - More effective marketing - Fast service - Effective exchange of geographic information to other bodies with similar interest in Greece and abroad 1

- Significant cost reduction in the levels of processing, production and marketing. Additionally HNHS personnel have been trained in various ENC construction issues and Quality Control procedures. Especially Digital Cartography Division (DCD) personnel has also attended seminars in 7Cs software (ENC tools) 3. New Charts and Updates During the last two years the cartographic program of HNHS was further continued with the production of new ENCs and updates as well as with national and international paper charts. More specifically the HNHS cartographic production has as follows: ENCs To date 271 ENCs and 1144 ER files have been released. MSI Existing infrastructure for transmission HNHS is the National Coordinator (NAVAREA III) for the areas covering Greek and adjacent seas and collects all the relevant Maritime Safety Information (MSI) which oceangoing mariners require for their safe navigation. For this purpose, collects and elaborates all the relevant navigational, meteorological and other safety and urgent information, forming the corresponding NAVTEX bulletins. These bulletins are forwarded, in English, to the three Hellenic NAVTEX Stations (IRAKLEIO KERKYRA LIMNOS), for further promulgation. Details of the activities of each station for the period 2007-2008 are given below. 8

During the last two years a total of 75 Navigational Warnings (NAVHELLEN) delivered. From 2008, and in conformity with the NAVAREA III Coordinator suggestions, this type of warnings is basically broadcasted through the NAVTEX Service. IRAKLEIO NAVTEX STATION (H) A total of 5585 NAVTEX bulletins have been transmitted, containing 1385 Navigational warnings (NAVWARNS), 2924 Meteorological-Forecasts, 891 Meteorological warnings (GALEWARNS) and 180 Search and Rescue messages (SARWARNS). KERKYRA NAVTEX STATION (K) A total of 5058 NAVTEX bulletins have been transmitted, containing 640 Navigational Warnings (NAVWARNS), 2924 Meteorological-Forecasts, 671 Meteorological warnings (GALEWARNS) and 46 SAR messages (SARWARNS). LIMNOS NAVTEX STATION (L) A total of 4418 NAVTEX bulletins have been transmitted, containing 482 Navigational warnings (NAVWARNS), 2924 Meteorological-Forecasts, 527 Meteorological warnings (GALEWARNS) and 60 SAR messages (SARWARNS). In addition, updated Notices to Mariners are provided for the mariners convenience through the HNHS site in the Internet. 6. S-55 The S-55 database is frequently updated for the Greek area of responsibility. 7. Capacity Building Training received, needed, offered NTR Status of national, bilateral, multilateral or regional development projects with hydrographic component. (In progress, planned, under evaluation or study) HNHS has signed bilateral arrangements with the HOs of Albania, Cyprus, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Korea, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Tunisia, UK, Ukraine, and USA. In progress are discussions with Bulgaria, Croatia, Egypt, France and Israel. 9

8. Oceanographic Activities General The mission of the HNHS in the area of Oceanography includes: - Conduction of oceanographic surveys in the Hellenic seas and the Eastern Mediterranean Sea embodying the results into relevant studies. - Support of the Greek Navy and other national defense bodies by providing the required data and information for the tactical exploitation of the marine environment - Supply of oceanographic data and conduction of surveys on behalf of third parties both from the private and public sector. - Prediction of the wave field in Greek waters Activities - Conduction of several oceanographic cruises using the hydrographic/oceanographic vessels of the HNHS for the assessment of the marine environment including the acquisition of physical and geological data along a network of sampling stations designed for the areas of interest to the Hellenic Navy. All data and information gathered is processed and used to support naval operations in relation to anti-submarine, mine and amphibious warfare. - Continuous measurement of sea level with tide gauges in a network of 21 permanent stations, located at several Greek ports around the coastline of Aegean and Ionian Seas. Seven stations have been upgraded to output the data in digitized form, in order to be able to be transmitted in real time. - Prediction of the wave field based on the prevailing wind speeds and directions in a specific area in order to provide the Ministry of Mercantile Marine with information to assess the navigational conditions for specific vessel types in different areas. 10

Tide Gauge network HNHS maintains a Tide Gauge Network of 21 (13 analog and 8 digital) gauges. 11

9. Other activities Participation in IHO Working Groups HNHS participates in the following IHO Commissions, Committees, Sub-Committees and Working Groups: IRCC, HSSC, MBSHC, HCA, WWNWS, CSPCWG, LAWG, TSMAD Meteorological data collection HNHS maintains a meteorological database for research purpose, using a network of stations and the data collected during the surveys conducted by its ships.
