Beaver Valley Estates Bulletin February - 2016 Happy Valentines Day Dr G Robert (1918-1970) purchases Beaver Valley from the Bazzill Sheep & Cattle Company for $10,000 in the early 1950 s. He is credited with developing and marketing Beaver Valley as a resort for physicians. Cottage #3 in Unit #1 was built first and was named Helen s Haven in honor of Dr. Barfoot s wife. In 1956 and 1957, Cottages #1 and #2 were completed, the water system was developed, the river channel was cleared and water supply flumes were laid to the pond and water filtration systems. Cottages #4, #5 and #6 were built and the Old Homestead House was remodeled. In 1960, Cottages #7, #8 and #9 were built along with a warehouse, half of the railroad track, and a swimming pool near the cottages. 1
Mike Williamson NREMTP Fire Chief Beaver Valley FD beavervalleyfd@hotmail.com Happy New Year! At the beginning of the year members of our fire board attended the Arizona Fire Districts Association conference in Laughlin NV for continued training. Hope everyone faired well through the storms. The Station lost its flag pole and a piece of aluminum trim. Our grant group as submitted 2 grants both targeting Personal Protective Gear. Our fingers on crossed on those. In January we ran 3 medical calls. One was in the Roundup about a 30ft fall at Waterwheel. This spring we will be doing a hiring test for volunteer firefighters. Contact me before this please. Ann Stoppa President, BVIA stoppa@cox.net Happy New Year! Our January meeting was cancelled do to the fact that we did not have a quorum. Our next meeting will be on February 6th. We urge residents to attend, it is a great way to stay up on all that is happening in Beaver Valley.I would like to thank everyone that helped make the drainage project by the fire station a success. The Fire Department, especially Sam Baker, helped with his knowledge of the situation and their financial support. Duke Arrington provided the tractor and concrete work at a discounted rate. Many hours were spent that were not billed for. Thank you to all that so generously give their time and talent to the community! Beaver Valley Firewise Committee Paul Slotvig pdsvalley@outlook.com On March 19 th at 10 am at the fire station, Beaver Valley - Firewise Basics will be presented. This is a program designed for newer residents of Beaver Valley. It describes what Firewise is, how it started, why we do it, and how to participate. This presentation is strongly recommended for neighbors who purchased their property in 2012 or later. Please plan to attend! On July 23 rd, Beaver Valley - Firewise Essentials will be presented. This program shows how we, as residents in an established Firewise Community, can help ourselves and our neighbors by doing simple things. It also discusses three things we need to remember to be Firewise. On September 24 th, Wildland Fires in Arizona will be presented. This presentation is an adaptation of a nationally-recognized program that has been specifically tailored for Beaver Valley. Your attendance at these meetings is time counted towards our 2016 Firewise re-certification. Please remember to complete your Firewise logs and turn them in to the Firewise mailbox at the Fire station. If your property is in need of assistance keeping Firewise, please contact me at 602-377-6000 or pdsbvalley@outlook.com. My thanks to the BV Auxiliary volunteers and BV Fire District for all of the clean out/clean up that has taken place over the last few months.thanks to you, and your efforts, we are already on track to renew our Firewise designation for 2016.Thankyou for everything you do to help keep Beaver Valley Fire wise. Albert Masterson Auxiliary President albert.masterson@hotmail.com Spring is around the corner and this is a good time to do your Firewise trimming around your property. You may also have noticed that the Auxiliary volunteers have been doing a lot of clearing out of blind corners so it can be safer for drivers and pedestrians. If anyone wants to get in on this fun and volunteer, please contact me by my email so I may get you on the list. You may have noticed that the brush dumpster is no longer available at the fire department.moving forward, we are asking you to haul your brush only trimmings to the center field next to the fire department. You may have already seen a brush pile started there. You are authorized by our HOA to pile your brush there. The fire department will periodically be burning the brush. We are asking you to put any large logs in the separate pile you will see there. Those logs take too long to burn within the brush pile. The logs are available for anyone who wants to take them for their own personal use. We are continuing to have Bingo Night. Bingo Night takes place the first Saturday of each month at the fire department meeting room. The crowd grows bigger each time the event takes place. Every game played gives the winner the chance to win 50% of the pot. The next Bingo Night will be Saturday, February the 6 th. Folks are asked to start gathering there at 5:30 pm to start purchasing your cards and settle in for a really fun night. You are encouraged to bring any snacks or drinks you want. The Auxiliary will be supplying Nestlé s hot chocolate and marshmallows. 2
Tips & Tricks Use a can opener to open sealed plastic packaging Cooking With Chef Beaver White Bean Chicken Chile Gluten free 1 1/4 lb Chicken breast 4 15.8 ounce cans Bush's beans great northern beans 1 cup Cilantro, packed leaves 4 cloves Garlic 1 tbsp Jalapeno 1 cup Onion 1 tsp Oregano 1 tsp Parsley 7 cups Chicken broth 1/4 tsp Black pepper 1 tsp Paprika 1/4 tsp Red pepper, ground 1/4 tsp Salt 4 tbsp Olive oil 1 tsp Cumin In a large stock pot bring chicken broth and beans to a boil. Add all seasonings (parsley, cumin, oregano, paprika, red pepper, black pepper, salt). Reduce heat to medium and let simmer. In a saute pan heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium high heat. Add chicken and saute about 3-5 minutes then add to pot. In saute pan heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add onion, garlic and jalapeno and saute until softened, about 5 minutes. Rough chop ½ cup of cilantro and add to onion, garlic and jalapeno mixture. Saute for a few seconds then add all to pot. Let chili simmer at least another 30 minutes, but the longer, the better. To thicken up chili a little use a potato masher to mash some of the beans up. A few mashes should do the trick. You could do this before adding the chicken if the beans are nice and soft. Before serving, add the rest of cilantro. BV Neighbors Respond to Storm Damage On Saturday, December 26th, high winds blew through Beaver Valley causing damage to a number of properties. Trees went down, branches broke, and some utility poles snapped off at the ground due to the strong gusts that came through. The following week, over a dozen BV neighbors gathered together to help two newer BV residents who had a large, mature oak tree fall on their property. The clean-up crew brought with them chain saws, trucks, trailers, rakes, blowers, pruners, water, and good spirits as they removed the downed tree from the property. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate in the clean-up. Click this link to see videos courtesy of Patrick Jenkins https://youtu.be/f5qyfnyxnta https://youtu.be/vxxsxssbnno Our New flag Pole Has Been Ordered We will still accept donations for supplies to set the flag pole and for replacement flags and bulbs for the light in the future. Anyone can send their donations to me (6084 E. 20th Ave., Apache Junction, AZ 85119) The flag pole is going to be dedicated immediately after the annual HIA meeting in April and will be dedicated to the entire community of Beaver Valley Basically the point is that the replacement and donation of the new pole was not handled by any one particular organiza(on, but simply by BV residents for BV residents. I have been personally overwhelmed by the amazing generosity of everyone who has already donated. Nearly everyone who won at the last Bingo game donated their winnings to the flag pole and the BV Auxiliary donated 50% of the money that came in for the games that night. the woman in unite 6 (Susie Jordan) also donated an additionally flag along with her monetary donation In addition to monetary donations, Forest has offered to remove old cement and help erect new pole. Many people wanted to remain anonymous. We will need volunteers when the flag pole arrives (to receive it and move it into the bay), and when we are ready to erect it. People who want to help can contact me, Mary Pat Culp (480-688-5633) Beaver Valley Auxiliary Charity Donation Update Beginning in early 2015, the Beaver Valley Auxiliary (BVA) began collecting and donating the points from the cardboard soda carriers, from the soda machine located at the fire station Ramada, to charities. The benefiting charities include Salvation Army, Goodwill, Children s Miracle Network, Special Olympics, National Parks Association, and more. The BVA will be donating the points to raise money for the charities through the end of 2016 to help celebrate our 50th anniversary as Beaver Valley Estates. As of the beginning of 2016, a total of approximately $200 has already been donated. Thank you to everyone for contributing to these worthy causes and drink up! Albert Masterson 4
