Background of Albania Albania is located in Europe, in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula and covers an area of about 28,748 square km, with a population close to 2,831,741 inhabitants. Albania is neighbored by Montenegro-northwest, Kosovo-northeast, Macedonia-east, Greece-south and southeast, Italy-72 km (50 miles) across the Adriatic. Seas: Adriatic and Ionian-west and southwest. Capital city: Tirana (nearly 800,000 residents). 3 Measures: Metric system. Currency: LEKË. Climate: Albania has a Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Weather in Tirana: The hottest month is August, up to 40 C; the coldest month is January, with temperatures as low as -2 C. Rainfall is abundant in Albania, but it occurs unevenly throughout the year. 3
