Twin Rivers District Annual Recognition Reception Fred Maytag II Scout Center 6123 Scout Trail, Des Moines, Iowa Thursday, February 8, 2018 7:00 PM This year s district reception will be on a Thursday evening. The event will feature recognition of unit leaders, unit commissioners, district committee members, and the District Award of Merit presentations. Hors d oeuvres, coffee, and soda will be available. Please pass the word to other interested individuals who would enjoy celebrating successful Scouting. Bring your chartered organization representative, committee members, volunteers, parents, spouses, and community leaders. This is the time to celebrate Scouting and our great volunteer leaders. Re charter began online October 1. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the very few youth serving organiza ons that covers all its leaders with liability insurance. Scou ng as we know it, would not be able to con nue if our leaders did not have the assurance they are protected. However, it s no surprise that costs go up and cost of liability insurance coverage is increasing at an extraordinary rate millions of dollars each year! The current coverage provided by the Na onal Council cannot con nue without an increase in the annual member registra on fee. Effec ve December 1, 2017, the annual registra on fee* for all of us will increase to $33.00. None of us like to pay more money, but there is good news: First, liability insurance remains in place covering you going to, at, or going home from any Scou ng ac vity. Second, in addi on to liability insurance, the Mid Iowa Council provides Accident & Sickness Insurance to every single member while engaged in Scou ng ac vi es at no cost to you. 7

Mingle with other leaders and swap ps and tricks for an easier, more fun Scou ng program. When and Where is Roundtable? Rain or shine, this event starts at 5:00 PM on Friday and will end at 6:00 PM on Saturday evening. Register at: h p:\\www.midiowacouncilbsa.org on the training calendar under the date. Pre registra on required. AMERICAN RED CROSS WILDERNESS FIRST AID COURSES: For the past several years, Sea Base and the Northern Tier have required at least one adult member of each crew to be cer fied in American Red Cross (ARC) Wilderness and Remote First Aid (WFA) and one adult cer fied in Adult CPR. Philmont is now requiring two deep training in WFA and CPR. Proof of this training is required at check in at each base. The ARC WFA Course is a 16 hour course which has been arranged for SeaBase, Summit, Philmont and Northern Tier crews. We offer the course over a weekend. Adult CPR is a pre requisite that must be taken in advance of the WFA course. (There will be no excep ons). CPR courses are readily available from the Red Cross or American Heart Associa on. Check their websites. ARC CPR cer fica on is good for two years from comple on. The WFA cer fica on is also good for two years. Erik Sanning has been conduc ng the WFA training for MIC crews for the past 8 9 years. He is an experienced ARC first aid instructor and has trained to teach this par cular course. As a bonus, he has significant Philmont/BWCA experience. Therefore, he brings some personal knowledge and experience to the training. Erik has selected several weekends that work well for him: January 13/14 March 17/18 May 5/6 According to the par cipant lists provided by each base, we know of eighteen crews doing Sea Base, Northern Tier or Philmont trips and three units doing their own trip. A minimum of thirty folks must be trained. Other leaders will be included if there is space available. Some crews may have this requirement covered. The ARC requires Erik to cap par cipa on at 12 trainees per course to make it a quality experience. If all crews take advantage of this opportunity, we would be able to get all the required training done in three sessions. For Philmont, trainees may be a responsible youth or adult. Sea Base and Northern Tier require an adult to be cer fied. At this point, with three sessions, it does not appear that we can offer to train more than the minimum number required by each base. There will be a cost involved. Last year the fee was $80.00/person which included all texts and materials. Erik will determine this year's fee a er he checks with the ARC on materials. Some crews divide this expense out among the crew; others have the par cipant cover the cost since he/she may benefit in other ways from having the cer fica ons. Payment will be expected prior to the Saturday morning of the class. The Mid Iowa Council Philmont Expedi ons will put together five crews of 10 Scouts and 2 advisors a total of 56 Scouts and leaders. It is me for you to think about commi ng to this expedi on. The Con ngent trek will depart and return to Des Moines; the dates are July 21 August 4, 2018. The two weeks should fall before the beginning of football prac ce and marching band in most school systems. Conflicts should be worked out in advance by the Scout and the coach. The trip will be two full calendar weeks: departure on a Saturday, return on Saturday two weeks later. The es mated cost of the trip is $1,280.00 per person and a deposit of $200.00 per person is due with the applica on. No further fees will be payable un l early fall of 2017 and future payments will be spread over a 10 month period. This is a first come first served situa on. The total cost includes Philmont fees, charter transport, meals en route, crew picture, maps, and con ngent T shirt and jacket. Each Scout is responsible for his own spending money. Fees paid are refundable provided cancella on is early enough to allow the spot to be sold to another Scout. Cancella ons made at the last minute may not be refundable since most expenses are fixed costs. Please make all checks payable to: MID IOWA COUNCIL PHILMONT EXPEDITIONS. Some things to keep in mind as you plan: The maximum crew size is 10 Scouts, 2 adult advisors. Crews larger than 12 are not permi ed. Smaller crews may have Scouts from other troops included. Scouts must be 14 years old by January 1, 2018, or have completed the 8 th grade by summer of 2018. No excep ons. All applicants must be registered members of the Boy Scouts of America. Philmont is a physically demanding experience. Applicants with chronic illness, excessive body weights, or severe food allergies should give serious considera on. A specific Philmont medical physical examina on is required. All travel is by chartered bus. Travel uniform is the Class A uniform ("Class A" shirt and Scout shorts or pants). Three mee ngs are required: the first was in September, the second will be in late March, 2018, and the final in early June, 2018. Scouts and adult leaders are expected to be in Class A uniform at each mee ng. Printed informa on is available at these mee ngs covering all aspects of the Con ngent. Each of the crews may set up addi onal mee ngs or prac ce hikes. Guidebooks, physical blanks, and other informa on are provided at the March, 2018, mee ng. A complete medical examina on will be required of each par cipant on the specific 2018 Philmont physical form. All communica ons, mee ng no ces, etc. are handled by mail, with correspondence addressed to the Scout, not the parent. NAME: Troop #: District: RRV Soc. Sec. # Home Address Home Phone # City State: Iowa Zip Code E mail address: Birthdate Leadership posi on: Membership number: Birthplace: (city) (county) (state) The above form cons tutes an applica on for the Mid Iowa Council Philmont Con ngent forming for the Year 2018. The requested informa on is necessary to the Council's applica on process and will not be used for any other purpose. It is understood that this completed applica on, along with the required deposit of $200.00, indicates that this Scout/adult fully intends to take part. Should circumstances prevent this, every a empt will be made to fill his slot, and full payment may be refunded. Dates of Con ngent: July 21 August 4, 2018. The total cost of the 2018 Con ngent is es mated to be $1,280.00. The fee is the same for both Scouts and advisors. This figure includes all Philmont fees, charter bus fares, and meals and a rac ons en route. Payments need to be made on a regular basis to enable us to make our commitments to Philmont and other vendors. Three mee ngs are held; the first in late September, 2017, the second in late March, 2018, and early June, 2018. We feel these are the minimum needed to provide the necessary informa on to the leader/advisor to ensure a good experience at Philmont. The crew advisors may also wish to plan addi onal mee ngs of the crew and prac ce treks. Please ini al to indicate that you have read and understand the above. 16
