NAPIER UNIVERSITY EDINBURGH & NAPIER UNIVERSITY HONG KONG ASSOCIATION news November 2008 Association New Committee Formed Our Association had the Annual General Meeting held on Thursday, 27 th November. This AGM marks a smooth transition of leadership at our Association. As Mr. Warren Cheng has successfully completed his term of presidency; Mr. Wing-kwong Chan was elected to be the new President of the Association. In addition the leadership change, we also have a number of new faces at the Committee. They are Mr. Allan Ho (BA(Hons) Financial Services), Ms. Natalie Chan (MSc Marketing), Mr. Oscar Cheng (BA Hospitality & Service Management), Mr. Peter Lam (BSc(Hons) Network Computing) and Ms. Winnie Leung (MSc Marketing). Together with those recurrent committee members, the composition of this year s Committee should able to help the growth of the Association and be increasingly representative as we now have members from a wide range of programmes including the newest local one, BA Hospitality & Service Management. Meanwhile, the new Committee will have the first meeting on Tuesday, 16 th December when all key positions will also be appointed. Should you have any suggestions and opinions towards the Association s development, our Committee members are more than happy to discuss with you. Napier Expert to advise Asian Broadcasting Development Robert Beveridge, Lecturer in Media Policy & Regulation; has been invited by the Asia Institute for Broadcasting Development to advise and take part in the development of a Declaration of the Asia Pacific Approach to Public Service Broadcasting. The draft document will be presented to the Asian Broadcasting Union and it is envisaged that it will be adopted by the heads of government summit to take place in Vietnam in 2010. Commenting on this, Robert said: It is a privilege to have been invited and to be the only European member of the working party present at the meeting in Kuala Lumpur. The draft declaration is the result of intensive work with media colleagues from Nepal, China, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and should help to enable public service broadcasting to become better established via examples of good practice Napier Showcased on BBC s One Show Napier s appearance on the BBC s The One Show was a great success and again highlighted our connection with the War Poets. Historian Dan Snow visited Craiglockhart, one of our 7 campuses; to film a piece about the War Poet s Collection and the poem Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen who was sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital after he was injured fighting in World War One. Prof. Alistair McCleery, Director of the Centre for Creative Industries Research; expertise on the subject was highlighted during the segment in a fantastic interview he did with Dan Snow. Forthcoming Activities Alumni Annual Reunion Dinner, Saturday 17 th January 2009 It is the perfect time for reunion with your favorite lecturers, former classmates around the Chinese New year session. This year our Alumni Annual Reunion Dinner is surely a Must go event to celebrate 2 major occasions of your alma mater. Prof. Joan Stringer, Principal and Vice Chancellor; will make one of the most important announcement in our alma mater's history at the Dinner, which is undoubtedly worth celebration meanwhile we will also celebrate the Hong Kong Association's 15th anniversary. In addition, this year's Reunion Dinner will also be more Scottish with increasing Scottish elements. For those who had attended our Reunion Dinners before, this year's Dinner will certainly give you some new experience from prior ones. For those who are new to our big family, come join us for the BIG celebration and feel for yourself of your alma mater's Scottish custom. Studying Trip to Dongguan Ever Gain Logistics Center by the Hong Kong Sea Transport and Logistics Association, Saturday, 20 th December 2008 HKSTLA is going to organize a Study Visit to Dongguan Ever Gain (EG) Logistics Center - phase one (350000 sq. meter), Sun Sha Pier and Guangzhou Kwong Wing Cargo Service (KW) Logistics center (20000 sq. meter) will be held on Saturday, 20 December 2008. EG is a Japanese warehouse operator and KW is a third party logistics operator. Participants will enhance their knowledge in China warehouse and distribution, value added services, pier operation, warehouse infrastructure and custom policies. The fee of the visit is HK$180 per member & HK$230 per non-member (include round-trip coach fee and lunch). Presentation will be in Cantonese & Putonghua.
