OAK KNOLL SUMMER CAMP Oak Knoll Wildlife Sanctuary Attleboro, MA DISCOVER. EXPLORE. BE OUTSIDE! SUMMER 2018

ABOUT CAMP Every day is an adventure at Oak Knoll Summer Camp! Campers ages four-and-a-half to 12 have fun, learn about nature, and make friends through a blend of outdoor exploration, hands-on activities, games, and art. Themed weekly sessions have campers exploring trails, discovering vernal pools, catching frogs, building forts, and venturing to new places. Small group sizes ensure that our counselors can develop a relationship with each child, creating a caring, supportive environment. OUR CAMP STAFF Camp staff members are chosen primarily for their ability to relate to and oversee youth in an outdoor setting. We hire enthusiastic, positive, and knowledgeable counselors who foster an emotionally and physically safe atmosphere. All staff members undergo background checks, participate in pre-camp counselor training, and are first-aid and CPR certified. OUR CAMP DIRECTOR Chris Hitchener is Oak Knoll s Camp Director and Education Coordinator. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Rhode Island and has worked in environmental education for 24 years. He enjoys bringing his experience and resources to the Southern Massachusetts community through the Oak Knoll Summer Camp program!

CAMPER AGE GROUPS Campers engage in outdoor, age-appropriate exploration and activities. Small group sizes ensure that our counselors can develop a relationship with every child, creating a caring, supportive environment. DISCOVERERS Ages 4.5 6 Entering Kindergarten Grade 1 Counselor-to-Camper Ratio: 1 to 5 Maximum Group Size: 5 Campers Discoverers learn about native animals, experience the joy of being out in nature, and play with new friends. Every day is an adventure as campers are introduced to the natural world. Small group size ensures that every child is heard and mentored. EXPLORERS Ages 7 8 Entering Grades 2 3 Counselor-to-Camper Ratio: 1 to 8 Maximum Group Size: 8 Campers Explorers work cooperatively to build structures, play interactive games, and try new things as they expand their science and nature knowledge. Campers learn about native species adaptations, behaviors, and food webs as they explore Oak Knoll s habitats with new friends! INVESTIGATORS Ages 9 12 Entering Grades 4 7 Counselor-to-Camper Ratio: 1 to 10 Maximum Group Size: 10 Campers Investigators delve deeper into the web of life as they compare native species to those found in other ecosystems. Campers may act as mentors to younger campers and get the chance to explore off trail at Oak Knoll! You were all so awesome... I can t thank you enough! Stacey B.

THEMED WEEKLY SESSIONS Monday Friday, 9:00 am 3:30 pm embers; $330 nonmembers, per week Campers enrolled in our themed weekly sessions explore trails, discover vernal pools, catch frogs, build forts, and venture to new places. HABITAT INVESTIGATION July 9 13; July 30 August 3 Study the homes, lifecycles, and behaviors of Oak Knoll s wildest residents as we trek through the sanctuary s field, forests, and wetlands. The Nature Center has a number of tools and resources to help us get a closer look at often-overlooked critters. We ll keep daily records of what we find and have plenty of time to explore the outdoors. DIGGING IN THE DIRT July 16 20; August 6 10 What gems of knowledge can we learn by studying dirt and soil? Dirt is Earth s diary; it tells us a story, holds secrets to our past, and contains the building blocks of future life. Explore rocks and minerals, archeology (the study of fossils, artifacts, and other material remains), compost, and volcanoes! Each day we ll investigate concepts that help us learn about the foundations of the Earth. NATURE ART EXPLORATION July 23 27; August 13 17 Artists like Georgia O Keeffe, Andy Goldsworthy, and John James Audubon were inspired by nature s beauty to create beautiful works of art. Go on daily adventures to find artistic inspiration in nature, and then express this inspiration by working with different mediums. One day we might collect items from nature to paint with, while the next day we might create artistic works using chalk and clay.

AFTER-CAMP PROGRAM Monday Friday 3:30 5:30 pm $20/day OR $90/week, members and nonmembers* Need a later pick-up? Our trained camp staff will supervise campers enrolled in our After-Camp Program. Campers may choose from a variety of activities, including active games, restful games, coloring, crafts, and reading. The group may also choose to play in the field just outside the Nature Center. Campers may choose to bring a snack from home. *Please note that preregistration is required. This optional program can be added by selecting desired dates on the enclosed registration form or by adding it to checkout when registering online. To add the After-Camp Program post-registration, please contact the Oak Knoll office at oakknollcamp@massaudubon.org or 508-223-3060. Pick-ups that occur after 5:45 pm will accrue a $1-per-minute fee. I love these daily newsletters with details and pictures. It s so nice of you to take the time to do this for us. Mass Audubon protects 37,000 acres of land throughout Massachusetts, saving birds and other wildlife, and making nature accessible to all. As Massachusetts largest nature conservation nonprofit, we welcome more than a half million visitors a year to our wildlife sanctuaries and 20 nature centers. From inspiring hilltop views to breathtaking coastal landscapes, serene woods, and working farms, we believe in protecting our state s natural treasures for wildlife and for all people a vision shared in 1896 by our founders, two extraordinary Boston women. Today, Mass Audubon is a nationally recognized environmental education leader, offering thousands of camp, school, and adult programs that get over 225,000 kids and adults outdoors every year. With more than 125,000 members and supporters, we advocate on Beacon Hill and beyond, and conduct conservation research to preserve the natural heritage of our beautiful state for today s and future generations.
