Chaparrí is a 34,412 hectare communityowned and managed private conservation area located in the dry forests of northern Peru. The reserve is one of the best protected dry forest areas and is home to a range of wildlife, including many endemic and threatened species such as the: Andean or Spectacled Bear, Andean Condor, White-winged Guan, Sechuran Fox, Guanaco, Tumbes Tyrant. The reserve is named for the spectacular Chaparri Mountain that dominates the landscape; this mountain was sacred for the Muchik people and is still revered by Shamans throughout Peru. It is now a model community-led conservation and ecotourism project where local people benefit from protecting their natural resources. Additionally, Chaparri is the centre for scientific investigation into dry forest ecosystems and the species that live there.
Chaparri Reserve Day 1: Lima - Chiclayo - Chaparri Private vehicle Transfer Chiclayo to Chaparri AM 2 Hours Transfer from Chiclayo airport to the Chaparri Reserve, on arrival you will be welcomed at the Interpretation Centre, after which an explanation will be given on the Dry Forest, followed by a short walk around the lodge. After lunch; take the Wachuma (San Pedro Cactus) and Osos (Andean Bear) Trail. To observe wildlife it is necessary to be patient, sometimes you will need to go several times to a spot and wait. Most of the time, you will be rewarded with an Andean bear or other species that inhabit the Dry Forests. Please note that it will be possible during your stay to observe the Spectacle Bear, White-tailed Deer, Sechuran Fox, White- Winged Guan, Andean Condor, King Vulture and other birds, all of which live in the surrounding areas of the Muchik Sacred Mountain near Chaparri : Journey to Chaparri (2 hours) Activity of the Day - Visit the Wachuma and Osos Trail Meals : Lunch Dinner Level : Easy Altitude : 29 m.a.s.l. / 95 ft. Average Temperature : 30 C / 82 F Day 2: Chaparri Reserve In the morning before breakfast, visit the bathing spot of the Hummingbird. Later you will follow the Osos or Bear trail system, lunch and in the afternoon visit Chaparri Creek and with your guide explore further trails. Dinner and overnight. Chaparri Eco Lodge.
