BOB NELSON MEMORIAL RUN OCT 17-19, 2003 Long time member, and essentially the Midlands Pod founder, Bob Nelson passed away in the fall of 2002. After his death, 6 MOGNW Morgans held an impromptu run through the Cascade Mountains in Bob s memory. At a dinner stop in Darrington, Kay Jones said some heartfelt words about Bob and suggested we have a Bob Nelson Memorial Run in future years. One of Bob s last runs was to the Winthrop area over Hwy 20. This years Run will be a low key event patterned after Bob s Tourallys. The fall colors will be spectacular! We will arrive at Sun Mountain Lodge (<www.sunmountainlodge.com>, reservations 1-800-572-0493), on Friday afternoon, spend an informal evening there, have an easy day run on Saturday in eastern Washington, a group dinner Saturday night back at the Lodge, and then home on Sunday. Sun Mountain Lodge will not take reservations for one night, so it is a two night affair. MORGAN MOUNTAIN CAPER III, Aug. 8-10, 2003 A few old members who have successfully avoided Alzheimer s may recall a couple of MOGNW events which were held in 1989 and 1992 in the National Forest and adjacent Mt. Rainier Park. Dave and Thea Wellington were the hosts and the central meeting place was their log cabin, Chipmunk Lodge. There was a great turnout for these functions and a good time was had by all; however, the weather gods did not fully cooperate on either occasion. Eleven years have passed since our last Morgan Mountain Caper and we think it s time to try again! Chipmunk Lodge is located in the National Forest at the NE entrance to Mt. Rainier Park on Hwy 410. The format will be similar to our two previous functions. We will begin the weekend on Friday evening. This year we re planning a dinner in the nearby quaint village of Greenwater which is 12 miles north our cabin. On Saturday morning breakfast will be served at Chipmunk Lodge. Many activities are planned for the day so a big breakfast is essential. A Morgan run to Chinook Pass, a scenic 3mi. hike at milehigh altitude, chair-lift rides to the top of Crystal Mtn. for a burger at Washington s highest restaurant, horseshoe tournament at Chipmunk Lodge, and a 1 mile round trip walk in the forest primeval to Goat Falls are all on the list. At the end of this busy day we will all gather at Chipmunk Lodge for a cookout. Hopefully, Powley will create his infamous ring of fire, but just in case, several other barbees will be in stand by mode! Following dinner everyone will hang out at the cabin and who knows how the spirit will move us! The big event on Sunday will be our drive to Paradise Lodge. After a light breakfast we ll caravan through Mt. Rainier Park for a Sunday Brunch at Paradise. It should be a spectacular drive. (In 1989 a torrential down pour occurred just as we departed from Paradise. Guess who forgot his top? That s right, your host, moi! So bring all your equipment.) The weekend will conclude following Brunch and we ll all head our separate ways home. Accommodations: If you plan on attending, you must book reservations NOW!! This is high tourist season. MORE MORGAN MOUNTAIN CAPER Newsflashes! It looks like accommodations for the Morgan Mountain Caper on Aug. 8-10 may be limited. The Alta Crystal Resort is 1.5 miles from Chipmunk Lodge. I've seen the lodgings there and they are very nice but a bit pricey. There is a 2-night minimum on all reservations! All units have kitchens and fire places and there's a swimming pool on site. See <www.altacrystalresort.com> for the resort details and to book your reservations on line for Fri and Sat nights, Aug. 8 and 9th. Toll free 1-800-277-6475. Alta Crystal is the ideal location because of its proximity to our cabin but I realize that the tariff is steep. I'm looking into the possibility of a 'group booking' at Crystal Mountain Resort which is 6 miles away. The hotels there are closed down during the summer months; however, the Alpine Inn sometimes opens up for special groups. Rates there will be much less, as will the amenities------but, hey, a bed's a bed. Right? A third option is the Silver Springs Campground. The campground is located in the National Forest and is literally across the street (Hwy.#410) from Chipmunk Lodge! Rates are $14.00 per night (only $7 bucks with a Golden Eagle pass). Hey, if Kay Jones' famous Caboose Run can make 'tenting' a pleasurable experience, why can't we? I have good news regarding accommodations for our weekend in the mountains August 8-10th. The ALPINE INN at Crystal Mt. Resort has hotel rooms at reasonable rates. Doubles (1 double bed with bath) are $65 per night + tax; Queen + single (sleeps 3) is $75; Connecting family room (1 double + 2 single bunks) is $95. The ALPINE INN is a European style hotel which means it's a bit funky (no tv or phone) but all rooms are very clean and comfortable-----and the price is right. Caboose Run June 7-8, 2003 hosted by Kay and Theresa Jones Runions photo 2 Dropheads, an original +4 SS, 4 other Plus 4s, a Plus 8, an MG TF, a Bentley and a Land Rover! What a mix and all British!! They came from Idaho. They came from Camano Island. West Seattle. Kingston. Shoreline. Redmond. Lakewood. Dare it be said this was the best Caboose Run yet? Absolutely. Over 700 miles roundtrip from the Seattle/Puget Sound area. Fabulous weather. Fabulous roads. Adair, Stegen, Runions, Button, Stinson, Marten (with 2 Morgans!), Harman, Ward, Dennis and other friends had an incredible weekend with the Jones at their Caboose retreat in northeastern Washington state near Colville. BBQ chicken and flank steak over the wood campfire. Bacon, pancakes, and coffee in the morning. Outdoor camping. Solar heated shower. Authentic one-holer outhouse. My, oh my. Sorry for those of you who sat on the fence and didn t come. Do it next time, if Kay and Theresa are so gracious as to put on this event again (and I think they might). Many, many thanks to them for their well-planned event.
VanDusen ABFM May 17 th from Ken Miles The arrival of the dawn on Saturday May 17 th portrayed a bleak sky threatening rain. The Gods were not happy with our English Cars and threatened to bring out Lord Lucas and all his faults. However, we were not daunted by this threat and proceeded towards the oasis of fun, good fellowship and the telling of tall tales know as the VanDusen ABFM. Twenty five Morgans survived Lord Lucas threats and managed to survive the first part of the rainy morning which by early afternoon had turned to sun. The 4/4s of Mike Povey, Bob and Claire Hauge, Les and June Burkholder, Bert McCabe, Woody and Carmel Thomson, Larry and Tina Sharp, Mike and Rosemarie Powley, Sheryl and Irvin Bryant-Harlos, Ken Griffin, and Dave Wellington provided an excellent backdrop for a display of Morgans. The Plus 4s of Steve and Celia Hutchens, Bob and Judy McDiarmid, Craig Runions, Marv Coulthard, Larry Emrick, Frank Decarlo, Ron and Yvonne Theroux, and Graham and Val Bailey were situated towards the front of the display but behind the Plus 8 s of Stu Rulka, Dick Dice, Ron Weiskind, Ken Miles, Ted Carew-Gibson and Win Muehling. One of the major prizes of the day went to MogNW s Frank DeCarlo for his Morgan Plus 4 which took first place in the under $35,000 restored class. Congratulations Frank!!!! In the 4/4 class Bob Hague was first, Ken Griffin second and Mike Posey third. In the Plus 4 class Bob McDiarmid was first, Graham Bailey second and Frank DeCarlo third. In the Plus 8 class Win Muehling was first, Ron Wisekind second and Dick Dice third. Congratulations to all winners. After the show we all retired to Ken and Pat Miles house for a party. Joining us there were other MOGNW members President Wayne and Linda Harris, Glenn and Susan Starko, Bob and Sharon Green, Frank and Kay Gruen, Tom and Mel Henderson, John and Setsuko Rennie, and Douglas Seager. Some time was spent on kicking tires and doing repairs to our cars either real or imaginary and in just plain talk with friends. Finally dinner was served with the great assistance of Woody and Carmel Thomson doing the cooking. Great job cooking the steaks, Woody. Everybody enjoyed the steaks, salads and garlic bread and the many appetizers and deserts. A pleasant evening was had by all, and judging by the time the last person left there was lots of camaraderie and we should all congratulate ourselves for surviving another (initially) wet VanDusen. Abbotsford Classic and Custom Car Show April 25th-27th from Ken Miles On the weekend of April 25 th to 27 th four couples from MogNW northern pod showed the MogNW banner, talked to many people and increased the public s knowledge of Morgans. It started on April 25 th with the set up of the booth in the evening. Ken and Pat Miles were first there with their 4/4, Plus 8 and the half built shell of the Drophead. Soon the rest of the merry crew turned up. Dave and Ruth Collis brought their blue and black 4/4, which was shining like I had never seen it before. Dave had spent the previous evening buffing and his work was well rewarded. Rod and Ann Lafond brought their four seater 4/4 and he was eager to show his latest improvements. Lastly in limped Stu Rulka with Marilyn s 4/4 making an ungodly noise in the engine. He was followed by Marilyn in the van and she was most upset at the noise. Everyone looked, listened and diagnosed and came to the conclusion that it was not at bad as it could be but it may be the top end not the bottom. Anyway with much pushing and shoving we got the 5 and a half Morgans all lined up, banners stuck to the wall and posters displayed before calling it a night. The next two days were very busy talking to people and informing them that they still make Morgans, they do have some steel underneath them and yes, the car that you can buy today looks very similar to the ones that we had on display. The Morgan Factory would have been very pleased with our sales pitches but it is a pity we did not have a new Aero 8 for display maybe we could have sold a couple. It is amazing how many people have had Morgans in their lives and how much interest was shown to the drophead which was on display without any body panels and showing all the underlying woodwork. At the final awards presentation, the group won third place in the Vintage car display (I don t know how we came to be classed as vintage), Stu (Marilyn) won 3 rd place in the vintage car class and Ken won 1 st place in the contemporary class. Altogether it was a very busy weekend and we met lots of people interested in Morgans and hopefully got some new members. Our thanks to the Rulkas, Lafonds, Collises and Miles for their sterling service over the weekend and hopefully we will find out what is wrong with the Rulka s 4/4 in the future after it was towed home on the trailer.

Vancouver - Whistler All British Run from Win Muehling (604) 299-2425 and/or email <wmuehling@telus.net> The 11th. annual Vancouver - Whistler All British Run is rapidly approaching once again. This years date is Saturday September 20th. We hope to have a contingent of Morgans present, and if enough interest is shown, we will make it an overnighter, as we have done on a number of previous occassions. The event is somewhat informal and essentially consists of a scenic drive on Saturday morning from West Vancouver to Whistler Village, with a lunch stop along the way. There is a roped off display area in Whistler where the cars will be displayed your participation and length of stay is optional. This is a great opportunity to make a weekend of it, with dinner and a night's stay. A popular and highly recommended conclusion to this weekend would be the return trip on Sunday via the Duffey Lake Road to Lytton and then through the Fraser Canyon. It is scenic, twisty, and lightly travelled. If enough interest is shown, I will arrange for a group booking at the Crystal Lodge <www.crystal-lodge.bc.ca>, phone 1-800-667-3363), however this could be a busy weekend so I would need to know ASAP how many are interested. Devils Punchbowl VIII (Sorry, Editor s recollection notes here. No one wrote up the event for publication.) Once again, kudos to the venerable team of Stromquist, Hauge and Harris who pulled off another spectacular Oregon coast week-end. As they say, half the fun is getting there (they do say that, don t they?) And fun we did have, including the roads and the winery! H&W Stromquist, B&C Hauge, W&L Harris, R&L Huntley, D&C Smith, B&B Stinson, G&T Seligman, C&J Runions, B&G Button, Loretta Nelson, K&P Miles, D&A Tilden, and L Vandermay all had a great time. Thanks also go to the Hauges for hosting a Thursday night dessert at their Longview home which bordered on the extravagant, with custom Morgan wings and MOGNW badge cookies and homemade ice cream! Way cool.
